I am inserting data from a csv file into a SQL Server table using the bulk statement, there is some German characters in file, and I want to use 'N at start of the row (as we use it in insert statement).
How can I do this?

You probably don't need N: this is for nvarchar columns.
The standard Latin1_General_CI_AS collation (includes varchar codepage) supports German characters already in varchar columns.

Note, internally SQL Server stores this as UCS-2
if mysql then use utf8 for table

I have SQL Server table that contains columns of type varchar(50) as a result of a CSV import using the SQL Server Import wizard.
I was wanting to know how I can change this data type to nvarchar(9) without getting a SQL Server truncation error.
I tried doing a bulk update to set the data types and column sizes that I need but still had the truncation error message when I tried to load the csv into the empty database table I created (with my required data types that I need).
Grateful for any help.
Since you are willing to lose data and nvarchar will only be able to store 9 non-unicode charaters, then select only 9 characters from your source table, You do the truncation rather than Sql server doing it for you.
The Following Query will trim any White spaces from the strings, Then take only 9 characters from the string and convert them to NVARCHAR(9) for you.....
CREATE TABLE New_TABLE (Col1 NVARCHAR(9), Col2 NVARCHAR(9))
GO
INSERT INTO New_TABLE (Col1, Col2)
SELECT CONVERT(NVARCHAR(9),LEFT(LTRIM(Col1), 9))

Bulk insert into temp table with varchar(50) and insert to actual table

select cast(tempcolumn as nvarchar(9)) from temptable
And it is also important to check field types of destination table. Just spent 3 hours because of same error with random casting, trimming, substring and at the end noticed, that colleague created table with too short field lengths.

If you encounter this error during Import/Export Tasks, you can use the select cast(xxx as nvarchar(yyy)) as someName in the "Write a query to specify the data to transfer" option
varchar and nvarchar only use the length needed for the data stored. If you need unicode support certainly convert to nvarchar, but modifying it from 50 to 9 - what is the point?
If your data is ALWAYS exactly 9, consider using char(9), and following one of the transformation suggestions above...

Unless I miss something in the question you can do this using TSQL CHAR() function:
INSERT INTO MyTable(ColName) VALUES(CHAR(13) + CHAR(10))
Will insert CR/LF. Same for other codes.
Edit there is TSQL NCHAR() as well for Unicode characters.
Please note that the function may vary depending on the type of your column, using the wrong function can result in wrong encoding.

Use an NVarChar or NChar column type instead of VarChar or Char.
I've linked some fiddle where a NVarChar column is used to insert and retrieve a '£' character. Please extend your question with a counter example where this doesn't work.
When you want to use characters outside of the database collation's range of characters - a.k.a an nvarchar literal - you need to prefix the opening quote character with an N:
UPDATE DEFVALU set [sign]=N'£' WHERE code='0006'
I am using Sql Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I am coding an application capable of inserting, updating, deleting and selecting records from a Sql tables. The application is making errors when it comes to the records that contain special characters such as ć, č š, đ and ž.
Here's what happens:
The command:
INSERT INTO Account (Name, Person)
VALUES ('Boris Borenović', 'True')
WHERE Id = '1'
inserts a new record but the Name field is Boris Borenovic, so character ć is changed to c.
The command:
SELECT * FROM Account
WHERE Name = 'Boris Borenović'
returns the correct record, so again the character ć is replaced by c and the record is returned.
Questions:
Is it possible to make Sql Server save the ć and other special characters mentioned earlier?
Is it still possible, if the previous question is resolved, to make Sql be able to return the Boris Borenović record even if the query asks for Boris Borenovic?
So, when saving records I want Sql to save exactly what is given, but when retrieving the records, I want it to be able to ingnore the special characters. Thanks for all the help.
1) Make sure the column is of type nvarchar rather than varchar (or nchar for char)
2) Use N' at the start of string literals containing such strings, e.g. N'Boris Borenović'
3) If you're using a client library (e.g. ADO.Net), it should handle Unicode text, so long as, again, the parameters are marked as being nvarchar/nchar instead of varchar/char
4) If you want to query and ignore accents, then you can add a COLLATE clause to your select. E.g.:
SELECT * FROM Account
WHERE Name = 'Boris Borenovic' COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AI
Where _CI_AI means Case Insensitive, Accent Insensitive, should return all rows with all variants of the "c" at the end.
5) If the column in the table is part of a UNIQUE/PK constraint, and you need it to contain both "Boris Borenović" and "Boris Borenovic", then add a COLLATE clause to the column definition, but this time use a collation with "_AS" at the end, which says that it's accent sensitive.
To allow SQL Server to store special characters, use nvarchar instead of varchar for the column type.
When retrieving, you can force a accent-insensitve collation so that it ignores the different C's:
WHERE Name = 'Boris Borenović' COLLATE Cyrillic_General_CI_AI
Here, CI stands for Case Insensitive, and AS for Accent Insensitive.
