Working remotely with an local IDE - ide

i am taking a course on GPU programming.
There is no IDE on the University Computers. Only text-editors, which is kind of a pity.
We are obligated to compile our code on the university machines, since they want to be able to compare the programs the students have produced with each other students code.
I want to use an IDE, because i think it makes things sooo much easier ( for example debugging )
My actual procedure is : i copy the files to my machine (via scp), code in Xcode , save ...
copy the files to remote machine, and compile it (via ssh)
So my question is:
Is there a way i can use an IDE like Eclipse or Xcode that can this automatically ?

How would you handle the "Work locally;compile on remote machine"-problem ?

Consider using git (http://github.com/) to solve your work-local, compile-remote problem. You can set up a git repository on the remote machine, and push your commits to it when you're ready to try compiling it. It also means that if any change breaks the compile - you can remove it without affecting any of the other things you've changed.

How to debug a compiled access database (accde)

I have an access front-end that connects to SQL Server tables and works fine. When I compile it into an accde file however, I get various errors when closing the DB. The errors seem to indicate that the program is still looking for a table or the value of a global variable. There is a routine in the Form_Close() event of a hidden form that Deletes all the links to the SQL Server back-end. So, how can I debug an already compiled access database? Why does the compiled DB behave differently than the uncompiled (accdb) version?
You need to trap errors using On error goto LabelName or if you don't care about errors you should use On error resume next on top of your code. You should still post your code to get more accurate help.
Are you talking about the same computer, or different computer?
The compiled accDE are VERY sensitive to being executed on a different machine (even the same version). The reason for this is that the compiled accDE takes on your current office release version.
In terms of global variables, and error handling?
accDE's are the BEST choice, since un-handled errors does not re-set local, or even global variables. In effect, a accDE runs like a un-stoppable freight train.
if your accDB (un-compiled) works and runs fine on your computer, then I have NEVER seen a case in which the accDE does not run, and in fact run better and behavies far more ro-bust.
So, no, you can't debug the accDE, but you can the accDB on the SAME computer.
If you are running the accDE on a different computer, then you left out a massive, huge and SPECTUALAR bit of information in your post.
If you ARE running the accDE on the same computer (that you created it with), then about the only possible is that the accDE file extension is using a different version of access to run with. This is rare - I would thus from the control panel, applications and features find your version of access and right click and do a repair on your office install.
The issue of patch version of office/access is VERY significant here. The reason of course is that if you deploy the accDB, it will often work because access can (and does) detect that the current version (even SP/patch/update) level of Access is different, then it can re-compile the code on the fly (because the accDB has the source code). The accDE does not, and thus it can't re-compile. However, I still STRONG suggest you deploy the accDE and resolve the SP/patch level issue since a accDE is oh so much more reliable in its operations compared to un-compiled accDB's.
I would be rather stunned if you are experiencing this issue on the same computer running the accDB and that computer is then used to create the accDE. If this is the actual case, then I would create a new blank accDB, and import everything from the old accDB, and then ensure it can compile the code (from IDE debug->compile). If the app compiles, then create the accDE, and it should work just fine. So, if this is same machine, then your accDB is damaged or corrupted. As I stated, create a new one, import everything from old, and create your accDE from that. It will work, and I never seen a case in which a accDB works, and a accDE does not work (on same machine).
1st thing to do is to decompile your application ...just Google Ms Access Decompile.
When you perform the Decompile and try to compile is almost certain that you will find some "forgotten" mistakes.

Xcode 4.4 unable to rename classes/variables

On both Xcode 4.4 and 4.4.1 I'm experiencing the same issue in that with the specific project I'm working on, I don't seem to be able to rename any classes or variables from the Refactor menu option.
Each time I try and do a rename, I type in the new name for the class/variable and click Preview at which point the bottom left begins a spinner with Finding files.... However, I then get a message saying:
The selection is not a type that can be renamed.
Make a different selection and try again.
I'm pretty sure that this is not an issue with my specific install of Xcode, because I can refactor other projects fine, it's just that I can't seem to be able to refactor this specific project.
Anyone with any ideas? I don't have any particularly exotic configuration for this project, it just seems to be a random affliction. I've deleted all of my derived data and re-indexed, but that doesn't seem to help.
Since it works OK in other projects, I'm thinking one thing I could try to do is re-generate the actual project file(s) itself. I don't know if there is a way to do this automatically?
If they're in dropbox get them out of there. It mangles project files. I've had it happen numerous times and at times it makes refactoring > renaming not work.
I have managed to solve this issue after trying many different things (tweaking project settings, pch, etc.) and it turns out there was a very simple (and totally counter-intuitive) method of fixing this issue.
All I have done is:-
Copy my entire project folder (so from Project to Project Copy).
Move Project (the original folder) to trash.
Rename Project Copy to Project.
Mysteriously, everything now works fine.
I really cannot figure out why this works. As mentioned previously, I had already deleted all derived data, etc. so I don't know why this should make things spontaneously work, but it does.
Would appreciate anyone who is able to shed some light on this as it does expose just how fiddly Xcode can be, and any understanding of what goes on under the hood is always beneficial.
Sounds like a buggered index.
I usually use the nuke from space option to delete everything in the derived data directory.
Unless you have changed it (I change mine to /tmp/bbum-derived), it'll be at:
~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData
Thus, I'll quit Xcode and do:
rm -rf ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData
Yes, it is a bit brute force, but it works. You can likely force Xcode to rebuild the index from the UI, but I never bother. Of course, I'm also installing quite a few "odd" builds of this and that as a part of my day job...
(that is an rm -rf. It means "nuke everything and don't ask" in unix parlance. It is dangerous. Do not mistype that command.)
It seems you have an active selection somewhere in the gui, perhaps some of your files or classes are selected ? Try unselect in every sub window and retry refactoring.
I'm a bit late to this thread, but I ran into the same problem today and I was able to get it to finally refactor correctly, thought I share it.
So in large part I did what bbum said, I closed xCode, nuked the Derived data for the project the class files were in and re opened the project. Doing just that, it didn't work; the key, I found (at least for me), is that I had to do a clean (command shift k) after xCode restarts. After that I was able to rename the class files again :)
Also as a side note, my project is divided into the main project, and a static library. When I had to rename classes in the static library, I had to quit the main project and do what I described in the static library itself. Somehow I got the same error described in the question when I tried to do the refactor/rename from the main project.

This thread was very helpful for me in determining the problem.
It turned out that I had to Repair Disk with Disk Utility. I had visited a site earlier that had hijacked Safari and was telling me to call a number for emergency repairs, an obvious scam.
I followed the Disk Utility instructions to repair disk (including restarting with CMD-R pressed). Another clue was that I tried to commit to git and Xcode said No Way, Jose.
Afterwards I was able to refactor and commit changes as if nothing ever happened. I hope this helps someone else as a possible cause to investigate.

Is there a way to 'test run' an ant build?

Is there a way to run an ant build such that you get an output of what the build would do, but without actually doing it?
That is to say, it would list all of the commands that would be submitted to the system, output the expansion of all filesets, etc.
When I've searched 'ant' and 'test', I get overwhelming hits for running tests with ant. Any suggestions on actually testing ant build files?
It seems, that you are looking for a "dry run".
I googled it a bit and found no evidence that this is supoorted.

This is impossible in theory and in practice. In theory, you cannot test a program meaningfully without actually running it (basically the halting problem).
In practice, since individual ant tasks very often depend on each other's output, this would be quite pointless for the vast majority of Ant scripts. Most of them compile some source code and build JARs from the class files - but what would the fileset for the JAR contain if the compiler didn't actually run?
The proper way to test an Ant script is to run it regularly, but on a test system, possibly a VM image that you can restory to the original state easily.
Here's a problem: You have target #1 that builds a bunch of stuff, then target #2 that copies it.
You run your Ant script in test mode, it pretends to do target #1. Now it comes to target #2 and there's nothing to copy. What should target #2 return? Things can get even more confusing when you have if and unless clauses in your ant targets.
I know that Make has a command line parameter that tells it to run without doing a build, but I never found it all that useful. Maybe that's why Ant doesn't have one.
Ant does have a -k parameter to tell it to keep going if something failed. You might find that useful.

VS2008 "must implement" fake errors?

I have a VS 2008 VB.NET Solution, which is quite large. Every once in a while, if I take latest code from source control, I get hundreds of errors. These aren't real errors. They are all about classes not implementing functions/events from interfaces (which they DO implement).
"Class [class name] must implement [event or function name] for interface [interface name]"
I usually end up spending couple of hours doing a combination of: building/rebuilding the solution project by project, cleaning the solution, deleting everything locally, taking latest... etc. At some point, everything just magically builds. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this? Other people on my team experience this as well. I do not see any circular references.

The root of the problem is that some projects are trying to build and they are dependent on the dll's that other projects generate.
You can solve this by modifying the build order of your projects.
Once you do this, everything should work fine on the first build attempt after check out.

I think it's related to some of the metadata/files Visual studio keeps around..my running theory is that VS isn't refreshing it's internal stuff when you do the latest pull from source control. Thus it tries to do a build, it thinks some files haven't been "updated" (thus it has an old intermediate object file lying around it uses instead) gets confused, and fails.
Generally doing a combination of Build->Clean Solution, Build->Build Solution solves it most of the time. I have, twice, had to blow away the entire build directory and pull a fresh copy from source control (Clearcase) and do a fresh build.
Edit: I have Clearcase integrated with VS2008, and do my checkouts/checkins/version history from within VS2008. Not sure if using the standalone windows tool would solve this issue, and haven't the time to test (not to mention being unable to reproduce the error consistantly)

What causes difference in VB6 app testing result when running from Dev machine vs installed?

I'm new to VB6 but i'm currently in charge of maintaining a horror of editor like tool with plenty of forms, classes, modules and 3rd party tools all chunk together like the skin faces on that guy in the texas chainsaw massacre...
What i don't understand is why i get different results when i run the app in debugging mode, vs when i compiled it and run it on my devevelopment pc vs when i installed it on a different pc.
Yes i know i'm dumb, so please direct me to where i can find out more about this. I'm hoping to find out something like different linking, registry related etc connection that i'm simply not getting right now, i.e. something like wax on, wax off :P
The main pain in the neck is when i'm trying to debug some errors from my QA and i need to find a spare pc to test this on plus i can't directly debug because i don't know where the code is if i do it that manner.

When you compile you have the option of compiling to native code or pcode. The debugger runs using pcode only. Under rare circumstances when you compile to native code there will be a change in behavior. This particular is really rare. I used VB6 since it's release and I may get it once or twice a year. My application is a complex CAD/CAM creating shapes and running metal cutting machine and has two dozen DLLs. Not a typical situation. At home with my hobby software I never ran into this problem.
There are another class of errors that result from event sequencing problems. While VB6 isn't truly multi-tasking it has the ability to jump out of the current code block to process a event. If it re-enters the same block for the new event interesting things (to say the least) can result. I think this is the likely source of your problems as you software is an editor which is a highly interactive type of software.
In general the problem is fixed by reordering the effected areas. You find the effected area by inserting MsgBox or write to a text file to log where you are. I recommend logging to a text file as MsgBox tend to alter behavior that are timing or multi-tasking related.
Remember if a event fire while VB6 in the middle of a code block and there a DoEvents floating around then it will leave the code block process the event and return to the original code block. If it re-enters the same code block and you didn't mean for this to happen then you will have problems. And you will have different problems on different computers as the timing will be different for each.
The easiest way to deal with this type of issues is create some flag variables. In multi-tasking parlance they are known as semaphores or mutexes. WHen you enter a critical section of code, you set it true. When you leave the routine you set it to false. If it is already true when you enter that section of code you don't execute it.

These are usually the result of the wrong DLL installed. Most likely you have an older version while the target has a newer version. I would download the free Virtual PC and create a clean Window XP install to double check this.
If your problem is event timing this too can be different on different computers. This is found by logging (not MsgBox) suspect regions.
If you can display a screen shot or the text of your specific errors then I can help better.
The first thing to check would be the versions of all the dlls that your app depends on - including the service pack version of the VB6 dll.
Have you any more specific details about what's behaving differently?
