I'm trying to figure out how to transfer the templates in the /.IdeaC10/config/templates/user.xml file to my coworker's machines.
If I copy into the user.xml file, then those changes seem to be getting squashed by Intellij, reverting to the old file contents.
Anyone know how to work around this?

Is there any way to do this by copying and pasting the xml? That would be preferrable...!
Use File | Imprort/Export Settings.
An improved and easier way
This allows you to share them easily between collegues.
You can select multiple live templates and then copy them (right click and select copy, or ctrl+c). This gives you XML-descriptions in your clipboard you can send to others.
Other can then take that XML, and paste it into a "Template Group". Right click one of the groups and select Paste. If the option is greyed out, you didn't select a group but something else.

the technique of copying and pasting the xml file on another computer in the correct directory, function perfectly for me! But the name of my template file is android.xml for my Android developments. Maybe the file name "user" is protected. Try maybe with a different file name
You need to create the required custom template groups and update the relevant predefined groups as necessary and click OK. Based on these changes, IntelliJ IDEA generates the <group_name>.xml files, see Location of Custom Live Templates Definitions above.
Depending on the operating system you are using, the .xml files are stored at the following locations:
Windows: <your_user_home_directory>.IntelliJ IDEA<version_number>\config\templates
Linux: ~IntelliJ IDEA<version>\config\templates
OS X: ~/Library/Preferences/IntelliJ IDEA<version>/templates

If I download the source and build it works fine, but if I do it myself Xcode won't find the default.inc.json file. If I alter the path to /default-theme/default.inc.json then that particular file is found, but other theme files aren't
Clearly, for some reason my set up is causing grief. However, analysing the directory structure of my app and the source comes up with no differences.
Has anyone run into the same?
Are you trying to set the 'root' theme file? If so it should be named 'theme.inc.json'. From there you should add in your own theme files and include files.

I was having the exact same problem.
The problem was when one drags the 'default-theme' folder into the project.
A window will appear asking how you want to add the files: make sure "Copy items if needed" is checked, and "Create groups" is selected. Important: do not choose "Create folder references" otherwise your project will not work.
The example now works as documented.
I have some source code that I want to document without touching the code. For every source file (e.g., example.cpp, example.f90, etc.) I would like to have a separate documentation file (e.g., example.cpp.doc, example.f90.doc) that has some metadata (ctag) linking it to the original source file.
Ideally I could open the source file and the documentation file in parallel views in my favorite editor (ViM) and have the two files synced so that they scroll together. In this manner, I can keep my documentation visually inline with the un-touched source code.
I know this is likely to be a unique scenario. But I'm hoping someone else has already figured this out.
Is this even a possibility?
Create the initial .doc structure outside of Vim such that the "metadata" you want to keep is in the same line number as the original file.
Then open the two files in different Vim windows with vim -O example.cpp example.cpp.doc. At this point use :windo set scrollbind to enable scroll binding, which will allow to navigate any of the windows while keeping both in sync.
I have intellij 13.1.3 Ultimate and have been using it for my PHP projects. All my files.php are nicely hightlighted for php.
This morning I had to create a new file called "report.php". At first I create it with right click > new > file, but this gave me no hightlighting. So I deleted it and tried again with a right click > new > php file with same result. Now what ever the way I create it, it thinks the file is txt (it seems so) and there is no code highlighting. It's pretty frustrating.
I have tested the creation of a new file with a different name "reports.php" but this time with right click> new > PHP file, and it came nicely highlighted. i tried to rename the file to "report.php" but it came back to no highlighting!!
It seems Intellij is stuck with the name report.php being a type text.
I tried to delete the file, restart the IDEA, recreate it the right way, no luck.
I tried power save mode on, and off. No luck.
I tried File > invalidate cache/restart, ... no luck.
I'm out of options here...
Is there a way to FORCE intellij to interpret a file? Is the name "report" a reserved word?!?!?
How can it be so stupid...

Also in settings > file types, I saw two Php file entries. One with no extention, and one properly configured. I deleted the bad one but it reappears after a restart of the IDEA!
Please go to Settings | Editor | File Types and remove the association of "report.php" with the text file type. (The erroneous association was created because of a bug in IntelliJ IDEA, but unfortunately we don't currently have specific steps to reproduce for it.)
Is it possible to pass paths to all files currently selected in the project view to an external tool?
I know you can use the $FilePath$ macro but it only seems to pass the path to the first selected file ignoring the rest and no other macro seems suitable. A workaround would also be using all the files from the parent directory, but that's not feasible in my case.
It's not possible right now, please vote for this feature request.
My specific use case is with an Android project, but this isn't Android specific. I have an IntelliJ-IDEA project with several Android modules which have been localized. If I want to open the file strings.xml, I will pretty much always want the non-localized one (in res/values rather than res/values-fr or whatever). But when I hit <ctrl><shift><n> and type strings.xml, it shows all the 30-zillion localized files and in fact shows them before the non-localized one. I would like to figure out a way to give IntelliJ a hint as to which one I would want, or a way to filter out files from that dialog. Any ideas?
