Where can I get a VS 2005 Report Server project template? - sql-server-2005

Problem:
-- I have a VS 2005 Report Server project with many reports.
-- I moved it to a new computer with SQL Server 2008 and VS 2005 and 2010 installed.
-- I was able to port the 2005 Report Server over OK (it's still 2005 even though the server is 2008), but now I can't open up my old project in VS 2005.
As I understand it, it's because SQL Server 2005 is not installed, which would have installed the Report Server Project template in VS 2005. SQL Server 2008 uses a different type of report project template.
So my question is: is it possible to get this template from somewhere else, other than from SQL Server 2005? For example, the Visual Studio 2005 on my old computer has this template installed. Is it possible to export it in some way? Or can I download it from the web somewhere?
I really need to be able to open this project!

I don't believe so, you'd need to install the Visual Studio 2005 Business Intelligence Designer Studio (BIDS) that came on the SQL Server 2005 install.
If you're a masochist and you sound desperate enough, you can download Report Builder 1.0 and use it to edit your reports. If you've watched the Harry Potter flicks, the 1.0 version of that app is a Dementor and prepare to have the joy sucked out of your life if you have to use the tool for very long. You can browse to your reporting server instance http://myserver/Reports/ (assuming default install) and there will be a Report Builder link there which runs a clickOnce non-install. MS does not supply a local install of the tool as they have with 2.0 and 3.0

How to upgrade SSRS 2005 report project for use with modern SSRS versions?

I have installed SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence (SSDT-BI) version 14.0.61705.170 and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) version 14.0.608.142.
I'm trying to upgrade and edit a collection of older report files for use with the current version of SSRS. The project upgrades (apparently) ok, and the reports are viewable in the SSDT-BI report editor.
But whenever I try to save any of these reports, an error message box pops up which says "Unknown Report Version: 9.0".
I suspect it's because the RDL files are so old, but I don't see 9.0 anywhere in the RDL file so I'm not sure what I need to tweak to make the files savable again. Perhaps an XML schema name or similar?
The main namespace in the RDL files is currently http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2005/01/reportdefinition
"Version 9.0" probably corresponds to SQL Server 2005 since that was the major version number of that release of SQL Server, and 2005 can be found in the schema namespace.
This document says that:
Reports that were created in any previous version of Reporting
Services can be upgraded. This includes the following versions:
SQL Server 2008
SQL Server 2008 R2
SQL Server 2012
SQL Server 2014
So... how can I upgrade these reports for full compatibility with modern SSRS versions?
I downloaded "SQL Server 2012 Express with Advanced Services" from MSDN and installed the SSRS report editing tools, and then used those to open & save the reports. (It also works to download SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2012 (version 11.0.5583.0) by following links on this Microsoft web page. This installs a different version of the SSRS editors, based on VS2012 instead of VS2010.)
This upgraded the .rdl files from the 2005 reports schema to the 2008 reports schema (I suppose there were no actual schema changes between SSRS 2008, 2008 R2, and 2012).
The upgraded reports could then be opened and edited in the SQL Server 2016 tools, which upgrades them again, to the SSRS 2016 schema.
I followed these steps to migrate old reports. Opened the old SSRS report project in VS2017 (not the solution file). It asks for the migration. Then open the rdl file in designer mode, it will upgrade the definition schema of the report. Save the report. You can then open the project file either in VS2015 or VS2017 with upgraded report definition schema.

Business Intelligence Reporting

All reports of the company have been designed by using BIRT. However , we decided to convert all reports into the Microsoft Reporting Tools. In addition, we use SQL Server 2008 R2 as database. Concerning this , do I have to do these reports by using Business Intelligence tool in Visual Studio or do I have to do it in the SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services ?
Moreover, How can I install SSRS to SQL Server and how can I install Business Tool into the visual studio?
Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) comes with SQL Server. You can install it from the SQL Server install (DVD, MSI, ISO). It's a standalone product unless you install Visual Studio in which case you use VS to access BIDS functionality instead, but this will be transparent to you, i.e. VS will open automatically when you try to open BIDS. If you already have VS, then installing BIDS will install as an add in to VS.
Alternatively you can install the Report Builder separately. I quite like this personally, you can get it here...

I'm not sure what you mean by SSDR, can you elaborate?

Cannot install SQL Server 2008 : Previous release of VS 2008 error

I had Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition installed in my computer. When i installed this VS 2008 version, SQL Server 2005 was also automatically installed. I just had to install SQL Management Studio
Because i want to install SQL Server 2008. I un-installed SQL Server 2005 and tried to install SQL Server 2008. But in the "Installation Rules" section in the installing setup, it prompts a message saying "Previous Release of VS 2008 Failed" (see the image below)
When I google it, i came to Microsoft Support where they say the VS Version i have must be Service Pack 1 and must be a release version (not beta version). Now I'm confused with it.
What should I do?
How do I find the Service Pack Version of VS 2008
How do I find if the version is a release or a beta one
I recently installed VS 2010 C# Express and Web Developer 2010 Express. Without going to SQL Server 2008 can I work with VS 2010 with SQL Server 2005?
How do I find the Service Pack Version of VS 2008?
There are service packs for Visual Studio 2008 express that are different to the VS2008 standard / prof etc service packs.
How do I find if the version is a release or a beta one? No idea.
I recently installed VS 2010 C# Express and Web Developer 2010 Express. Without going to SQL Server 2008 can I work with VS 2010 with SQL Server 2005?
Yes you can work with SQL 2005 with both of those to the best of my knowledge.
You can try uninstalling all instances of visual studio and then installing sql 2008 but that would be a last resort i would think. Trying the vs2008 express service packs would be my first step.

I also had this issue and when I visited Microsoft site, then I found this solution and it worked.

Business Intelligence Installation QUESTIONS. Another 2008 vs 2005 thing

Alright I know there is a lot on here about this, but I haven't gotten the information nor the answer.
I have Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2005. (I want to keep using 2008)
I have Microsoft SQL Server 2005. (Without BIDS)
Which version of BIDS should I get. If I get BIDS 2008 will it work even though I use SQL 2005.
BIDS 2008 can connect to databases of earlier versions. The question is where are you going to run the packages from if you don't have at least one 2008 server? I've not tried to schedule a 2008 package on a 2005 server, but I suspect it can't be done.
Basically, you have to have VS2005 and VS2008 Running side by side aka both installed on the computer along with BIDS for each. Luckily, hard drives are huge these days.
i found this link that actually had the answer which was:
I think what I was bascially asking is that, If I install visual studio 2008, and lets say I already had visual 2005 installed, then to create a business intellijance project I must install interation service for 2008. Integration service from 2005 is not going to work on visual studio 2008 is what it seems like.
That's correct. To create SSIS packages for SQL Server 2008 you will need to use Visual Studio 2008 with the SSIS project template that is installed when you install the SSIS components. You cannot use Visual Studio 2005 to create SSIS 2008 packages, nor can you use Visual Studio 2008 to create SSIS 2005 packages.

SQL Server 2005 and 2008 on same developer machine?

Has anyone tried installing SQL Server 2008 Developer on a machine that already has 2005 Developer installed?
I am unsure if I should do this, and I need to keep 2005 on this machine for the foreseeable future in order to test our application easily. Since I sometimes need to take backup files of databases and make available for other people in the company I cannot just replace 2005 with 2008 as I suspect (but do not know) that the databases aren't 100% backwards compatible.
What kind of issues would arise? Do I need to install the new version with an instance name, will that work? Can I use a different port number to distinguish them?
I found this entry on technet: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3496209&SiteID=17
It doesn't say more than just yes you can do this and I kinda suspected that this was doable anyway, but I need to know if there are anything I need to know before I start installing.
Anyone?
Yes this is possible. You will have to create a named instance not used by another version of SQL Server as per the previous answer and version 3.5 of .Net installed. Works great!!
Here the list of prerequisites:
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1
Windows Installer 4.5
Windows PowerShell 1.0
If you have Visual Studio 2008 installed you will get a validation error and you cannot install SQL server 2008 until you install Visual Studio 2008 SP1. If you don't have Visual Studio 2008 installed it should not be a problem. So if you do have Visual Studio 2008 wait till August 11th since that is the day that Visual Studio 2008 SP1 will ship
I believe that this is perfectly possible. I am currently running both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 on my development server while I transfer applications over.
The only thing you will have to do is create a new instance which isn't already being used by SQL Server 2005.
As with anything new, there will probably be some bugs, however, it should generally "just work".
my experience is after having sql sever 2005 and 2008 on same machine SSIS 2005 does not work properly... specially with script task, data flow and sequence container
You could run just SQL 2008 as the single instance and then attach/create databases with compatability level of 2005? The problem with that is that its a theory. Im not 100% positive that if you create a database on 2008 , with a compatability level of 2005, and then detach it, that a SQL 2005 instance is capable of attaching it.
I think its a good enough chance to try though. But I agree with the previous answers, the multiple instance options will work fine.
Unfortunately, it seems SQL Server 2008 Client Tools requires Visual Studio 2008 SP1, and I'm loath to install a beta of this on my main development machine.
I'll wait until SP1 is RTM before I move on.
Edit: Yes, I do have Visual Studio 2008 on this machine, but I'd like to avoid beta installations of debugger applications. They tend to dig themselves too deep in for my taste.
I have try it with negativ result. The 2k8 installation breaks with a mysterious error-message. The installation-protocol looks fine, but it will not work. After this the 2k5 installation was buggy too.
The 2k8 installation was half-ready, so it´s already in controlpane / software, but uninstallation is not possible.
So my result - don´t do it on a productive server / workstation. If you need both versions, use a virtual machine instead.
