We are in the process of integrating sharepoint 2010 with oracle HRMS system.
Our development environment is :
windows server 2008 x64
sharepoint 2010 x64
visual studio 2010 x32
sql server 2008 x64
Now, when i used Oracle client 11g R2 64 bit (64 bit oracle.dataaccess.dll) for connectivity to oracle, visual studio being 32bit not able to load 64bit oracle.dataaccess.dll and is reporting build errors of project.
when i tried Oralce client 11g R2 32 bit (32bit oracle.dataaccess.dll) for connectivity to oracle, visual studio is able to load 32bit oracle.dataaccess.dll but w3wp.exe being 64bit is reporting problems with oracle.dataaccess.dll which is 32bit.
Oracle is not providing a "Any CPU" compilation of oracle.dataaccess.dll only "x64", "x32" target compilations of this dll are available.
Microsoft is no more providing Ole db providers for oracle.
unless we add reference a oracle.dataaccess.dll compatible with both VS 2010 and SP x64 we cannot deploy and debug in VS.
Any way out to develop,deploy,debug using VS 2010 + SP 2010 + Oracle.dataaccess.dll.
We have written about this in our FAQ: http://www.lightningtools.com/bcs-meta-man/faq.aspx
Basically Visual Studio being 32bit needs the 32bit Oracle Drivers and SharePoint is 64bit and needs the 64bit drivers.
The company I work for has a tool called BCS Meta Man which will generate a .Net or Database model for you, it's a Visual Studio Extension:

Man + Oracle walkthrough
You can use just the normal Visual Studio BCS Model Project to make the Model manually, but you'll probably notice very quickly that it's quite a steep learning curve:

Could not load file or assembly
'Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc, Version=11.0.0.0,
Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its
dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
I cannot "see" the referenced DLL even though it is in the proper spot. I can therefore not bind the datasource to the control. What might I be failing to do?
Please see original question and answer here: Could not load file or assembly Microsoft.SqlServer.management.sdk.sfc version 11.0.0.0
Problem: This issue happens when assembly Microsoft.SqlServer.management.sdk.sfc version 11.0.0.0 not found by visual studio 2012.(Sql server 2012)
Solution: just go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35580 and download:
ENU\x64\SharedManagementObjects.msi for X64 OS or
ENU\x86\SharedManagementObjects.msi for X86 OS,
then install it, and restart visual studio.
Problem: This issue happens when assembly Microsoft.SqlServer.management.sdk.sfc version 10.0.0.0 not found by visual studio 2010.(Sql server 2008)
Solution: just go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26728 and download:
1033\x64\SharedManagementObjects.msi for X64 OS or
1033\x86\SharedManagementObjects.msi for X86 OS,
(In most cases downloading this is better http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=123708&clcid=0x409)
then install it, and restart visual studio.
From here:-
From the error message, we can see there is some missing component in
VS 2012 installation. The assembly in question -
Microsoft.SqlServer.Manangement.Sdk.Sfc version 11 - is a component
DLL for SMO assemblies (even though SFC was originally created for
more ambitious SSMS extension), and it is included in SQL Server 2012
Shared Management Objects.
[SQL 2012 Shared Management Objects] has dependency on [SQL System
CLR types] component, so you have to install SQL Server System CLR
Types first.
[SQL Server 2012 System CLR Types] can be found in the middle of SQL
2012 Feature Pack web page (

Just want to share my experience on this.
I, too, encountered this error. I'm using MS Visual Studio 2013 and I have an MS SQL Server 2008, though I have had MS SQL Server 2012 Installed before.
I was banging my head on this error for a day. I tried installing SharedManagementObject, SQLSysClrTypes and Native Client, but it didn't work. Why? Well I finally figured that I was installing 2008 or 2012 version of the said files, while I'm using Visual Studio 2013!! My idea is since it is a database issue, the version of the files should be the same with the MS SQL Server installed on the laptop, but apparently, I should have installed the 2013 version because the error is from the Visual Studio and not from the SQL Server.
I had this problem after installing SQL Server Express 2014. Apparently 2012 points to some files that are in 2014 and I completely erased all old versions of SQL Server. After much frustration I ended up reloading Visual Studio 2013 and it set up all of the files it needed and now works with SQL Server Express 2014
Currently our BSP is built using Visual Studio 2005. I would like to update this to use VS 2010 at the very least, preferably 2012. I have not been able to find anything that will allow me to do this. I tried to upgrade the project to VS 2008, but it failed to load the project. I was wondering if anybody had some ideas or could at least point me in the right direction.
Visual Studio 2008 does support the Platformbuilder Plugin and creating Applications for Win CE, however the import wizard is not perfect, you may need to change some settings by hand.
Visual Studio 2010 does not support creating BSPs or applications for Win CE.
Visual Studio 2012 will support creating of BSPs and applications for Windows Embedded Compact 2013.
It also includes a new faster version of the .Net Compact Framework.

I have developed a desktop application in vb.net using visual - studio 2010.
I want to run that application in different pc every time. For that I have created a build of that application.
But I am not able to run this application other than my pc.
I also installed the dot net framework 4.0 in other pc but it gives error "WIC component not installed".
What should I do to run my application in different computer systems every time? , what are the pr-requisites for running the application.?
Please help. Thanks in advance.
Googling that error would seem to suggest you need to install the Windows Imaging Components on the other machines.
64 bit downloads
32 bit downloads
Judging the by the system requirements I'm guessing Windows 7 onwards includes this by default.
Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter Edition (32-Bit x86)
Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (32-Bit x86)
Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (32-bit x86)
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Windows XP SP2 Windows
Server 2003
I have VS2012 Ultimate installed. In the Installed products it states I have SQL Server Data Tools 11.1. When I go to SQL Server 2012 and click on the SQL Server Data Tools Menu option, VS2010 starts up.
I changed the target to point to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe instead of C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe
So now VS2012 starts up but under new projects I DO NOT have the option to create a new SSIS package. Nor the option to download the data tools off the web.
I did go through VS2010 and download DataTools for 2010 and also selected the download for 2012. VS2010 now has Business Intelligence but VS2012 still does not have this template.
Please help. Slowly going mad.
SQL Server Data Tools part for Business Intelligence (SSAS, SSIS, SSRS) has been released as an add-on for Visual Studio 2012 in March 2013.
It can be downloaded here
If you are running on a 64 bit system and have any error message, use option 1 during the installation (New install). It will only add the BI Studio and not try to reinstall anything else.
Cnfusingly Microsoft have 2 different products called SQL server data tools, the one from the installation media which gives you the BI templates in VS2010 and one that you can download, which just adds the database project type to VS2010/12. Currently there are no BI templates available for VS2012, which is incredibly frustrating, it's due to the version of the Visual Studio Shell used by the tools on the installer only supporting 2010. I guess we'll just have to wait for an update to that :(
New download and more compatibility languages as of January 2019.

I am bit confused as on this..
Which version of Share Point designer (32 or 64bit) do I need to use to work on SP 2010.
When I try to download the 64 bit , I see a message as "32 bit is recomended for most users ..".
I have installed SP 2010 on win 2008 R2 in virtual box. Is it mandatory for me to install Vs 2010 on same machine to develop web parts ...?? Can I install Vs 2010 in a different machine ..?? Which version of VS 2010(Express, Prof, Prem or Ult) is required ..??
Sharepoint 2010 can be installed on client machines with Windows 7 or Vista.
It is required for Sharepoint 2010 products that you are running x64 version of OS.
The development tools like VS and Sharepoint designer can be either 32bit or 64bit.
Microsoft recommends 32-bit for all the Office products, including SharePoint Designer included. I believe it's mostly to do with compatibility with other programs.
"The 32-bit version of Office 2010 is the recommended option for most people, because it prevents potential compatibility issues with other 32-bit applications, specifically third-party add-ins that are available only for 32-bit operating systems."

Which version of Share Point designer (32 or 64bit) do I need to use to work on SP 2010?
You can use both the 32-bit or the 64-bit version. But, it is recommended that you install the 32-bit version because the Office 2010 32-bit version is recommended. If you install the SharePoint Designer 2010 64-bit version than you cannot install the 32-bit version of Office 2010.

I have also installed SP 2010 on Win 2008 R2 in VBox. The SP installation is a standalone installation. I have also installed VS 2010 on the same VM. But, you could separate out the SP and VS 2010 installation on multiple VMs. The downside is you will need to have both VMs running at the same time (at least during your deployment to SP). You will need at least the professional edition of VS 2010.
