How to specify explicit locking while creating a table in PostgreSQL - sql

What is the default locking mechanism in PostgresSQL when we create a table ? is it row, page, table level or something else?
Is it possible to specify row level locking when we create a table ? something like below in Sybase.
CREATE TABLE user
(...)
LOCK DATRAROWS
Or do we not need to specify any locking strategy and leave it to Postgres to choose the best while we dealing CRUD ?

There isn't anything you can specify at CREATE TABLE time for PostgreSQL. At run time, you can select rows FOR UPDATE or FOR SHARE. If you're coming to PostgreSQL from another platform, you should skim the docs on concurrency control.

There is no locking when you create a table.

When using SQL it means that Your data is relations, which means most of the records are somehow related in the different tables and this relation is expressed with foreign keys. However when attempting to delete data which is id is related with data in another table a cascade deletion should be implemented, the other way around it is add additional boolean column named isDeleted(as example ofcourse) and just alter specific rows to true in this specific column and then filter by preferences. Hopefully I have managed somehow to provide with alternative and/or possible solution to Your problem.

P.S. also if You want just to DELETE all the data You can either use TRUNCATE TABLE or DROP DATABASE query. With the latest option You will have to recreate the database once more.
Because you want to delete all databases from all tables, you are essentially deleting the database.
The sqlite way of doing this is to just delete the database file.
In contrast to postgres or mongodb or most databases, sqlite doesn't have a server so no need to call DROP DATABASE.
As soon as the file is gone and you open the database from your application you will be in a blank state again.

I have two processes which are reading a table first then updating data in it . I want only one to update and other get this update in its read . working of my processes is as follows:-
Lock table
read data

You can use TABLOCKX hint to lock entire table, but locking entire table is usually a bad idea, you might want to reconsider if you really need it.
If you want to ensure you're updating latest data, you can use rowversion column, and double check before update instead of locking entire table for reading.
In your select statement you can provide a "select for update" table hint: with (updlock). Depending on what percentage of records you are updating and their physical distribution this might perform better than a table lock.
But as Fedor Hajdu pointed out, what you probably want is an optimistic locking scheme. Check out the documentation for the READ COMMITTED SNAPSHOT isolation level. You might also find this article useful as an introduction.

In Oracle can you create a table that only exists while the database is running?

Is there a way in Oracle to create a table that only exists while the database is running and is only stored in memory? So if the database is restarted I will have to recreate the table?

I want the data to persist across sessions. The reason being that the data is expensive to recreate but is also highly sensitive.
Using a temporary table would probably help performance compared to what happens today, but its still not a great solution.
You can create a 100% ephemeral table that is usable for the duration of a session (typically shorter than the duration than the database run time) called a TEMPORARY table. The entire purpose of a table in memory is to make it faster for reading from. You will have to re-populate the table for each session as the table will be forgotten (both structure and data) once the session completes.

Oracle has the concept of a "global temporary table". With a global temporary table, you create the table once, as with any other table. The table definition will persist permanently, as with any other table.
The contents of the table, however, will will not be permanent. Depending on how you define it, the contents will persist for either the life of the session (on commit perserve rows) or the life of the transaction (on commit delete rows).

You can use Oracle's trigger mechanism to invoke a stored procedure when the database starts up or shuts down.
That way you could have the startup trigger create the table, and the shutdown trigger drop it.
You'd probably also want the startup trigger to handle cases where the table exists and truncate it just in case the server stopped suddenly and the shutdown trigger wasn't called.

Using Oracle's Global Temporary Tables, you can create a table in memory and have it delete the data at the end of the transaction, or the end of the session.
If I understand correctly, you have some data that needs to be processed when the database is brought online and left available only as long as the database is online. The only use-case I can think of that would require this is if you're encrypting some data and you want to ensure that the unencrypted data is never written to disk.
If this is actually your use-case, I would recommend forgetting about trying to create your own solution for this and, instead, make use of Oracle's encrypted tablespaces or Transparent Data Encryption.

creating a table only if it's not existing with ANSI sql

I am trying to dynamically create a SQL table only if it's not already existing. I have seen many solutions on the internet but they usually rely on a specific database, while I'm trying to find the most generic solution.
I was thinking of always running the CREATE command and then assuming that if it fails then the table exist and I can start inserting data into it. I can't see any flaw in this reasoning (not counting performance issues), but I might be wrong.
Is this an acceptable method?
Can you suggest other methods which are database independent, or that use ANSI SQL that all RDBMS would accept?
if there is a table - say - EMP, does that really imply that it is the same EMP that you are expecting?
Either query the appropriate data dictionary for the table structure, or fill your code with a ton of error checking and conditional logic...
INFORMATION_SCHEMA is part of the ANSI SQL Standard, so you should be able to:

Is it possible to create more than one table at a time using single create table statement.
For MySQL, you can use multi-query to execute multiple SQL statements in a single call. You'd issue two CREATE TABLE statements separated by a semicolon.
But each CREATE TABLE statement individually can create only one table. The syntax supported by MySQL does not allow multiple tables to be created simultaneously.
#bsdfish suggests using transactions, but DDL statements like CREATE TABLE cause implicit transaction commits. There's no way to execute multiple CREATE TABLE statements in a single transaction in MySQL.
I'm also curious why you would need to create two tables simultaneously. The only idea I could come up with is if the two tables have cyclical dependencies, i.e. they reference each other with foreign keys. The solution to that is to create the first table without that foreign key, then create the second table, then add the foreign key to the first table with ALTER TABLE ADD CONSTRAINT. Dropping either table requires a similar process in reverse.
Not with MS SQL Server. Not sure about mysql.

Not in standard SQL using just the 'CREATE TABLE' statement. However, you can write multiple statements inside a CREATE SCHEMA statement, and some of those statements can be CREATE TABLE statements. Next question - does your DBMS support CREATE SCHEMA? And does it have any untoward side-effects?
Judging from the MySQL manual pages, it does support CREATE SCHEMA as a synonym for CREATE DATABASE. That would be an example of one of the 'untoward side-effects' I was referring to.
(Did you know that standard SQL does not provide a 'CREATE DATABASE' statement?)
I don't think it's possible to create more than one table with a 'CREATE TABLE' command. Everything really depends on what you want to do. If you want the creation to be atomic, transactions are probably the way to go. If you create all your tables inside a transaction, it will act as a single create statement from the perspective of anything going on outside the transaction.
