I was trying to work out the best method of synchronising an update of files via vb.net. I want to automatically update some files in a few folders from an FTP site to a local drive. This would ideally be the same folder structure, but on a specified local folder. I have looked at the FTP methods in .net and am able to transfer individual files successfully, but wondered if there was an elegant method to collecting the entire folder from the FTP and it's contents to be re-created locally. I have established the reading of an XML via linq from the ftp to establish an update single and decide whether the local machine is up-to-date or not, it's just the transfer of the folders that i'm stuck on as it's different to using a IO method.
Can any gurus confirm that this is the best way of approaching this task?

Your approach looks fine to me. You will have to transfer the files/folders individually if you are using the base class library.
There may be 3rd party libraries available which will do this on one shot.

I have an SFTP server here that I can use and is already used manually for a few sites.
I'm looking to automate as many sites as possible using batch files on a scheduled task.
Initially, I'm looking at automating the internal side of the process.
We simple have a requests folder that needs to import from the SFTP (then delete the original on the SFTP) and a response folder which needs to copy to a 'sent' folder and then export to the SFTP (also, deleteing the original)
On the SFTP server I have a "to site" and "from site" folder. Each file is site specific followed by a variable. So SiteNameImport.<variable> and SiteNameExport.<variable>

I've tried reading the automation guide on WinSCP website but a lot of it means nothing to me.
Filezilla doesn't support automation, You're better off with WinSCP. They have some scripting examples here as well as any other information you'll need to build the scripts functionality. You'll just need to add the specifics (Like deleting sent files and so on) CuteFTP is also another solution you can script with but I believe you have to pay for a licence. I suggest VBscript, Examples can be found Here for vbscript.
Could anybody explain to me the process of uploading to and downloading form and ftp server with the iPhone SDK. If you could just point me in the right direction (e.g. documentation etc.). How difficult is a task like this?

In this, you'll be particularly interested in Chapter 5. Both detail working with FTP sites, including uploading, downloading, retrieving directory listings, etc.

I ended up using GoldRacoon. It turns out that in iOS/objc land, there's BlackRaccoon as the original FTP client lib, then WhiteRaccoon was forked from that, and then GoldRacoon was forked from WhiteRaccoon (I think)

Is there a way to upload an entire directory, such as this:

Never worked with FTP in VB.NET, but it seems there is no direct way to do it.
Here is what people say about how it can be done:

Create the same directory structure in the FTP server.
Upload the file in each local directory.
Also see here for same question answered (C#). It confirms there is no built-in way. You would have to write some code or use 3rd party libraries.
Ideally I'd like to be able to copy/move between an accessible folder on my local drive and a network share that I don't have permission to access (but the application would).
I am using impersonation to give me access to the files in the network share but using System.IO File.Move or File.Copy forces me to use the same credentials for each location. Is there a way around this?
What I believe you could do is something like this.
Do the impersonation to allow the selection of files. Copy the files to a location that the app can get to.
Stop the impersonation then have the application copy the file from the temp location to the desired end result.
We have done this before in our applications, it isn't elegant, but it works perfectly!
We've done something similar to what Mitchel Sellers is doing, except that we don't have a location that both identities can read from. We are reading blocks of data into memory using the local context and writing them out while impersonating the remote user.
I cannot use the Resource File API from within a file system plugin due to a PlatSec issue:
*PlatSec* ERROR - Capability check failed - Can't load filesystemplugin.PXT because it links to bafl.dll which has the following capabilities missing: TCB
My understanding of the issue is that:
File system plugins are dlls which are executed within the context of the file system process. Therefore all file system plugins must have the TCB PlatSec privilege which in turn means they cannot link against a dll that is not in the TCB.
Is there a way around this (without resorting to a text file or an intermediate server)? I suspect not - but it would be good to get a definitive answer.
The Symbian file server has the following capabilities:
TCB ProtServ DiskAdmin AllFiles PowerMgmt CommDD
So any DLL being loaded into the file server process must have at least these capabilities. There is no way around this, short of writing a new proxy process as you allude to.
However, there is a more fundamental reason why you shouldn't be using bafl.dll from within a fileserver plugin: this DLL provides utility functions which interface to the file servers client API. Attempting to use it from within the filer server will not work; at best, it will lead to the file server deadlocking as it attempts to connect to itself.
I'd suggest rethinking that you're trying to do, and investigating an internal file-server API to achieve it instead.
Using RFs/RFile/RDir APIs from within a file server plugin is not safe and can potentially lead to deadlock if you're not very careful.
Symbian 9.5 will introduce new APIs (RFilePlugin, RFsPlugin and RDirPlugin) which should be used instead.
Theres a proper mechanism for communicating with plugins, RPlugin.
Do not use RFile. I'm not even sure that it would work as the path is checked in Initialise of RFile functions which is called before the plugin stack.
Tell us what kind of data you are storing in the resource file.
Things that usually go into resource files have no place in a file server plugin, even that means hardcoding a few values.
Technically, you can send data to a file server plugin using RFile.Write() but that's not a great solution (intercept RFile.Open("invalid file name that only your plugin understands") in the plugin).
EDIT: Someone indicated that using an invalid file name will not let you send data to the plugin. hey, I didn't like that solution either. for the sake of completness, I should clarify. make up a filename that looks OK enough to go through to your plugin. like using a drive letter that doesn't have a real drive attached to it (but will still be considered correct by filename-parsing code).
Writing code to parse the resource file binary in the plugin, while theoratically possible, isn't a great solution either.
