I have an app and would like to know if there is any kind of API for a service similar to Shazam where I can hold my phone up to a music source and be told of the song guess? It could work well with my app, but I can't find anything about Shazam API and I don't know any other service that does what I want (but am open to anything)

The free and open source alternative is Echo Nest / Echo Print. They claim to have a database of 30 million songs and 1.5 million artists, and they provide free access for both commercial and non-commercial use. Probably worth checking out!
Update: here's the Echo Nest iOS library

ACRCloud supports Music/Audio search engine and SDK for iOS/Android/Linux, which could be downloaded after registration (http://console.acrcloud.com/signup).
There are three tiers:
Free tier, for demo/prototyping
Accelerating tier, for startups
Commercial tier

Audio recognition services are provided by a number of companies, many of which license these services for a fee. None are cheap, requiring significant repositories of signatures / music catalogs and computational capacity. Check out the folks who own the technology used by Shazam - Landmark Digital Services, the makers of Soundhound - Midomi, or Gracenote's MusicID. There are others, but these are probably three of the biggest players currently.
UPDATE (11/8/12): To note, Shazam apparently has reacquired the rights to the recognition technology and Landmark Digital is now defunct. Also, as noted in another answer, Echonest now provides a recognition technology, Echoprint, that for some uses appears to be free.

I am looking to build a voice based interactive automation system. To make the experience more realistic I am looking for 3D avatars that could read a given text(response) in real time.
The closest I found something on the net is Ultra HAL for windows (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEtgfXbpCqI). I need something similar, expressive, programmable through an API and preferable for a MAC or Linux. TTS is not that mandatory.
Thanks for the help.
Sadly there is nothing comparable to the (15 year old) Haptek avatar technology (the underlying tech Ultra HAL uses). Even on the Windows platform. We use Haptek for Cassandra for all the reasons you want such a package. To my knowledge nothing else supports such high quality, 3D, emotively & verbally autonomous characters. Note: In-game 3D avatars are all carefully scripted and acted scenes and not actually interactive.
I would like to extend the question/request to the Android platform. Many developers could make great use of that. Cassandra certainly would.

My current project requires us to receive text messages online. It's hard to wade through the search results as many of the are just websites with about 10 numbers for everyone to use.
I am looking for services along the lines of what is being offered at http://www.tropo.com
You can send and receive text messages online on your own private generated phone number within the US or Canada.
Preferably free, just need a few more before I make any decisions
Thanks!
Disclaimer, I do developer evangelism part time at Nexmo.
Here are a few paid SMS APIs:
Nexmo
Twilio
Tropo
You may be able to hack something together that works for free, but you risk that solution being disabled by whatever provider you use (for example, some people send SMS via Google Voice, but I wouldn't recommend relying on that).
Since you're receiving SMS, Nexmo would be a good solution when it comes to price. You only pay for the virtual number (roughly $1 a month), and all incoming messages are free.
Try www.twilio.com they have a good API and it is free while testing.

we're working with a client who's parent company is using intershop enfinity 6 as a shopping platform with each sub-brand using their own shops, but they are connected to the "mothership" via some form of api.
now i am facing several problems:
i have no influence on what software is used whatsoever, so i know enfinity is probably a pain in the ass but i have to live with that
i will be old and grey until they manage to get me some contact or documentation from the parent company's it department
apparently there is no chance of acquiring documentation from intershop without being a registered customer. at least i found nothing on their site but the brief mention of "modularity"...
all i want to do is to look up what kind of api (or whatever they use to implement shopping functionality on other sites) this is and if it is in some way standardized, etc... any info helps.
is there anyone with experience on this? i'm sure to get some specs someday but it would be nice to come a bit prepared.
thanks in advance,
anton
You get detailed information only if you have a support / customer account with Intershop. Or you get your hands on an install DVD provided by your client - there you can find a whole set of documents and API documentation. The best information until then would be visiting http://www.intershop.com/enfinity-functionality.html - but it just talk about features, not technology.
(Disclaimer: I work for Intershop)

Is there an API that would let me access my AMEX transactions? How do Mint or any other finance websites export my data? If so, is it free?
Take a look at open financial exchange.
American Express appears to support this.
Mint uses the services of Yodlee (see here), a firm that essentially acts as middleware between banks and companies like Mint.
You might be interested in Yodlee's Account Data Gathering API but it looks like it is something that requires a formal agreement, and access to the API probably needs to be paid for..
MasterCard are also looking at releasing an API (see here) so maybe AMEX will follow suit?
You can find sample code, SDKs, and a variety of other open source work by American Express on GitHub.
Check the following URL for details description: https://developer.americanexpress.com/essentials
Java client library and samples
.NET client library and samples
We welcome your contributions on GitHub. Feel free to submit requests or send us a pull request with your contributions. We'd especially like to know which languages you'd like to see more of for our samples repository.

Is there a fingerprint reader api/sdk? [closed]

I need to read the user's fingerprint from my application.
What I really want is a simple SDK that works with a lot of inexpensive fingerprint readers but I can deal with something that works only with one specific model if that model is cheap and available worldwide.
And it has to be royalty-free, I can pay for a development license but if I have to pay for each installation I just can't use it.
What I'm doing has no relation to login or encryption, so the software included with the reader will probably be useless to me.
There is no standard API for reading fingerprint data as far as I'm aware since it is a fairly new field and there's no standard way of doing it. Each manufacturer will provide their own API for reading the hardware. The API could just be IO specification to the hardware and there's no library whatsoever, which makes things a bit trickier. This is down to two factors. The first is that finger print readers are used in many applications - custom hardware, embedded systems through to PC authentication and beyond. Providing software for all those different systems would not be viable from the manufacturers point of view. Secondly, each manufacturer uses a different approach to reading and processing the captured images which would make a common API problematic.
It's an old question, but I bumped into it while researching the topic.
I did find a free library for Linux - libfprint
Digitalpersona has a free SDKs both for windows and linux.
http://www.digitalpersona.com/products/developer.php
I dont know if there are costs for deploying with their SDKs.
(Actually it appears they don't charge per machine/user licensing.)
Did you take a look at the BioAPI consortium site? There's a library for linux over at Google code.
There's also libchipcard, but it doesn't mention fingerprint readers, only smart cards.
Hope that helps.
Symbol has an api for their MC75 handheld devices:
http://support.symbol.com/support/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=12364&sliceId=&dialogID=104336066&stateId=1%200%20104330426
Of course, it only works for their Windows Mobile 6 MC75 devices.
See Windows Biometric Framework.
