I'm trying to create a custom action that does a postback when clicked in SharePoint 2010.
I've followed the following articles with no luck whatsoever:
http://makarandrkulkarni.blogspot.com/2010/01/sharepoint-2010-ribbon-customization_09.html
http://blog.dennus.net/2010/07/20/ribbon-buttons-with-postback-in-sp2010/
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sridhara/archive/2010/12/30/implementing-a-post-back-button-in-a-sharepoint-2010-web-part-with-contextual-ribbon.aspx
Frankly, article 3 is a ridiculous amount of work just to do a postback so I didn't even attempt it.
I've managed to get the button on the ribbon but without the CommandUIHandler element in the elements.xml the button is forever disabled.
Anyway, this is what I'm trying to achieve:
I have an external list. I want a custom action on the list that updates a field in another database when it is clicked. Now, this doesn't have to be via a postback, I am open to any suggestions anyone has - I just thought doing a postback would be simple, obvisouly I was wrong. This, so I've heard was stupidly easy in SharePoint 2007.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

I am programming the On_Click method for the button labeled "View" in the first printscreen below. The method will load a form with data corresponding with the specific address id in the row containing the "View" button. This code worked perfectly when pointing to a target form called "Addresses". However, when I decided to rename the form "Address", I started receiving the following error message when clicking on the view button:
I did some research on the web about this error message, which lead me to try to delete any outdated references in the VBA editor. But when I clicked on Tools-->References in the VBA editor, I got the following error message:
It seems that MS Access' entries in the system registry might have been corrupted. But I am not certain of this because the documentation of this on the web is sparse and inconsistent.
Here is a link to the database on a file sharing site: http://jmp.sh/b/9Uyx6J2YzWbs8zPq2h6g
If the problem is in the database, you can recreate the problem by opening the form "Main" and clicking on the button "View" for the record shown in the printscreen above, or for other records.
Can anyone show me how to get past this error message?
my advices?
You could rename your Forms!....SourceObject to "Address" instead of "Addresses"
You could copy/paste the form, delete the original, and retry
You could install a decent debugging tool like MZ-Tools for VBA, that will help you manage your errors. Check the details here
EDIT: I used to get similar bugs years ago, when I was writing specific form event procedures. As we decided to switch to a model where forms did not need to be debbuged anymore (check this here), we stopped getting this kind of message. And I think I forgot the trick we used to solve this kind of error. If I were you:
I'd try to open another access database and import all objects ...
I'd put aside/cancel the faulty onClick procedure
And I'd install MZ Tools because otherwise VBA debugging is a nightmare ...
Since access was not liking the command button in each record of the continuous form, I choose to put the view button's logic in the on click event of a text box in each row, which I configured as enabled but locked. This produces a separate link from each record of the continuous form to a unique detail page with more of the chosen record's data.
This solution works perfectly, and is enabling me to move on with my other coding.
However, it would be nice if someone else were able to show how to get the command button solution to work.
I'm using Sharepoint Designer (2010) to develop a series of connected lists.
I have a number of child-lists and I use the "DispForm.aspx" of my main list to add these 'children'.
Recently the DispForm.aspx has stopped opening in Sharepoint Designer. Clicking it from the list's main page goes into the Form view, but the page never loads and I get no error messages.
Since I can't see the Code window I can't make any changes, even though the page works fine in the browser and I can perform (limited) edits directly on the website through Sharepoint.
Has anyone got any tips on what I could try, or any way of accesing the code in DispForm.aspx if I can't open it in Sharepoint Designer?
Not a fix as such, but I got around this by mapping a drive to the sharepoint site and using notepad++ to edit the file directly.
If you browse the lists folder and the list you are interested in you will see the display, new, edit forms in there

I'm learning how to develop webparts in SharePoint 2010.
What I'm having difficulty finding is how to allow the user to change the DataSource of the WebPart in the UI. I want to allow them to pick a list from the site, preferably of a specific type but one thing at a time.
Is there a specific control to do this or are you just supposed to expose a property of the webpart so the user can alter it?
There must be information on this out there but I'm having trouble finding it.
Does anybody have any good links on this subject?
Craig,
Using Web Part Property you can change DataSource from Edit mode and save it.
For custom webpart property click here.
Let me know if u have any query.
It sounds like it is the Content Query Web Part you are looking for.
This sounds like a great place to start reading:
"How to: Customize the SharePoint Content By Query Web Part by Using Custom Properties (ECM)": http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa981241.aspx
Good luck!
I have a list, and want to insert custom javascript code in a new form for this list (when form loaded). For example, when new form for this list is opened, I want to make some layout modifications for this form.
How it can be done? And how many ways exist to achieve this?
Thanks.
Upd: I ask about SharePoint list, and SharePoint list forms, I suppose you look at the tags of the question :).
You put tags for both SharePoint 2007 and 2010 and the methods are a bit different.
I agree with the previous post that with SP2010 you can simply use InfoPath designer for form design and do whatever you like to the look.
In SharePoint 2007, there are a couple ways incuding using SharePoint Designer, editing the form .aspx file, hiding the out of the box form and inserting a custom form which you will then be able to edit. You can also add in JavaScript code there as well.
My preferred method if you are just making some visual modifications is always JQuery which you can add in to a content editor and you can look for the particular tags surrounding rows or columns and attach to them and make your changes.
I think your question and tags need further clarification to get an articulate answer from anyone that will actually help you.
You can edit the layout using InfoPath 2010 like described here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint-designer-help/edit-list-forms-using-infopath-2010-in-sharepoint-designer-HA101631624.aspx
If you've got the SP2010 Foundation or SP2007 version, you can create custom list forms using SP Designer which gives you the option to do whatever you like since those are .aspx files.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint-designer-help/create-a-custom-list-form-HA010119111.aspx
You can also edit the aspx List form in SP designer. To add Javascript or jQuery you should create a form for New in PS design then edit in Advanced mode to insert your Javascript in the proper place. There are many tutorials on the Web that talk about this... Also, you can add content editor webparts to the new aspx page where you can insert your Javascript or jQuery.
I'm working in a ribbon project for Excel 2007, using Visual Studio 2008 and VSTO, I'm trying to make my ribbon's groups collapse into galleries when I resize the Excel window, this is a functionality that the other tabs in the ribbon have (the tabs that come with Excel).
At first, I thought this wouldn't be that much difficult, I imagine that it would be like a property from the ribbon, but I have researched a lot about it and it seems that it is not that much easier.
I was looking at this article, there is a post from a guy called "Mike McGavin", he is asking for the same thing that I'm, and the guy that answer his question tells him that auto resize is not current functionality on custom groups/controls.
Now, that post is 1.5 years old...so I'm hoping something new has been out there, maybe some of you know something about it.
Thanks.
It's in 2010. Scroll down to Custom Group Auto-Scaling section.
