I have a WCF Data Service with a custom operation named MostRecentFilms that returns the 10 most recent films in the source. Each film has, among others, a Year property. All goes fine with the default setting but when I set the page size for entity sets, config.SetEntitySetPageSize("*", 100), the order of returned films are not good. Doesn't matter if the result set has less than 100, they are not properly ordered from more recent to less, how it was returned when the page size restriction wasn't present.
I don't know if this is a WCF Data Service bug or if I'm missing some configuration here. Any help to clarify this will be appreciated.
This is actually by design. The way the server driven paging (SetEntitySetPageSize enables it) is implemented requires a stable (and well known) order of the results.
So the service will order the results of your service operation (it does that with entity sets as well) by all the key properties on the given entity.
The client can influence the ordering to some extent - if there's an $orderby on the request the resulting order will be the application of $orderby followed by all the key properties.
Currently there's no way on the server to prescribe the order for either entity set or service operation such that the processing of server driven paging would take it into considertation the same way it does with $orderby from the client.
You can either make your client add the right $orderby or if that's not possible the only other workaround I can think of is to inject the $orderby into the URL before it gets processed by WCF Data Service (this can be done through a custom host, special headers, WCF, ... depends on how exactly you host the service and such). But that's a bit hacky and requires you to semi-parse the URL to be able to recognize any existing $orderby already there.
Note that this behavior is not only for server driven paging, also $top and $skip will reorder the results to maintain a stable ordering.

I often use WCF Test Client. Unfortunately this tool does not order alphabetically nor in "order of appearance" (order in which operations are declared in service contract class). This make it quite difficult to find specific operation if there are many.
Is there any way to force WCF Test Client, to order the operations alphabetically?

Even though it does not seem to be possible to order operations alphabetically I realized that WCF Test Client has built-in incremental search.
That helps if you know what you are looking for.
According to this post, I am using a data context per call, so in each method of my WCF service, I use a using block to create a new data context.
But I have some doubts in the form to work in this way.
For example, I use a method getAllCLients() from my repository to get all the clients of the data base, then the service send to the client that call the method a list with all the clients. Then the user modify the information of some of them, three for example. The modify client perhaps I can add to a list that have the modified clients.
When I want to update this three clients, I can call a method updateClients() which receive a list of modified clients. How I am use a new data context per each method, in updateCients() get a new dataContext, without entities, so I think that I have to follow this steps:
1.- create a new data context which has the clients that I want to update. SO I need to specified the conditions for that. This is an extra operation (I get the clients before with the getAllClients() method), so I need to get again the clients.
2.- go throw the clients collection of the DBSet (I use EF 4.1) and change the information. This makes me to go throw the list that I receive from the client application too. So I must to go throw two lists. This needs resources.
3.- save the changes. This is needed anyway, so it has no required more work.
There is any way to make the step 2 easily? exist some method in dataContext to pass the values from my modified client to the client in the data context? I use POCO entities, perhaps it exists an easy way to do that.
Other question is about concurrency. If I control the concurrency with pesimistic concurrency that allow EF (with a timestamp field for example), is it better to call the updateClient() one for each client or better to pass a list with all the clients? I mean that if I use a list as parameter, if there is a concurrency issue with one client,the second for example, the first client will be update correctly, but the second not and the third neither. How can I notify to the user that there is problems with some clients?
To resume, I would like to know the best way to make updates when I have a short life datacontext.

The service is disconnected scenario so when your client passes backs modified records you just need to process them as modified. You don't need to load all records from database for that.

If you are using per call service and every service operation needs context you can move your context instancing to service constructor because service instance will live only to server single service call = you don't need using for every call. If you do that don't forget to implement IDisposable on your service to dispose context.

EF doesn't support pesimistic concurrency out of the box. Using timestamp is optimistic concurrency because it allows others to use the record. Pesimistic concurrency is application logic where other client is not able to select locked record for update.
The concurrency is resolved per record but the problem in this case is transaction. Each call to SaveChanges results in transaction used to process all changes in the database. So if any of your modified records is not up to date you will get concurrency exception and whole transaction is rolled back = no record is updated.
You can still overcome the issue by passing list of modified records to the service (reducing roundtrips between client and service is a best practice) but you can process each record separately by calling SaveChanges for every single record. Anyway this should be very carefully considered because each call to SaveChanges is like separate unit of work - is it really what you want?
Btw. the best practice is to make your service statless. You should avoid maintaining data between service calls and this example really doesn't need it.
Just started my first WCF rest project and would like some help on what are the best practices for using REST.
I have seen a number of tutorials and there seems to be a number of ways to do things...for example if doing a POST, I have seen some tutorials which are setting HttpStatusCodes (OK/Errors etc), and other tutorials where they are just returning strings which contain result of the operation.
At the end of the day, there are 4 operations and surely there must be a guide that says if you are doing a GET, do it this way, etc and with a POST, do this...
Any help would be appreciated.

OK I left the comment REST best practices: dont use WCF REST. Just avoid it like a plague and I feel like I have to explain it.
One of the fundamental flaws of the WCF is that it is concerned only with the Payload. For example Foo and Bar are the payloads here.

This is one of the tenants of WCF so that no matter what the transport is, we get the payload over to you.
But what it ignore is the context/envelope of the call which in many cases transport specific - so a lot of the context get's lost. In fact, HTTP's power lies in its context not payload and back in the earlier versions of WCF, there was no way to get the client's IP Address in netTcpBinding and WCF team were adamant that they cannot provide it. I cannot find the page now but remember reading the comments and the MS guys just said this is not supported.
Using WCF REST, you lose the flexibility of HTTP in expressing yourself clearly (and they had to budge it later) in terms of:
HTTP Status code
HTTP media types
ETag, ...
The new Web API, Glenn Block is working addresses this issue by encapsulating the payload in the context:

But to my test this is not perfect and I personally prefer to use frameworks such as Nancy or even plain ASP NET MVC to expose web API.
There are some basic rules when using the different HTTP verbs that come from the HTTP specification
GET: This is a pure read operation. Invocation must not cause state change in the service. The response to a GET may be delivered from cache (local, proxy, etc) depending on caching headers
DELETE: Used to delete a resource
There is sometimes some confusion around PUT and POST - which should be used when? To answer that you have to consider idempotency - whether the operation can be repeated without affecting service state - so for example setting a customer's name to a value can be repeated multiple times without further state change; however, if I am incrementing a customer's bank balance this cannot be safely be repeated without further state change on the service. The first is said to be idempotent the second is not
PUT: Non-delete state changes that are idempotent
POST: Non-delete state changes that are not idempotent
REST embraces HTTP - therefore failures should be communicated using HTTP status codes. 200 for success, 201 for creation and the service should return a URI for the new resource using the HTTP location header, 4xx are failures due to the nature of the client request (so can be fixed by the client changing what they are doing), 5xx are server errors that can only be resolved server side
There's something missing here that needs to be said.
WCF Rest may not be able to provide all functionality of REST protocol, but it is able to facilitate REST protocol for existing WCF services. So if you decide to provide some sort of REST support on top of the current SOAP/Named pipe protocol, it's the way to go if the ROI is low.
Hand rolling full blown REST protocol maybe ideal, but not always economical. In 90% of my projects, REST api is an afterthought. Wcf comes in quite handy in that regard.
I have a client who has a web service providing several different top-level entities. Let's say there are three which are of particular interest: Organisations, Sectors and Activities.
The client wants to be able to search for a term across all three of these entities simultaneously without have to make three separate calls. For example, "return all records whose name contains bread".
While the expand keyword would seem to be the solution at first glance, this only provides a view into the parent entity.
My suspicion is that this cannot be done by virtue of the way in which OData is designed to work, but I need to have a conclusive answer before going back to the client.
Unless the server provides a service operation for this exact purpose (and that would be pretty tricky to design anyway, what type should it return?), then it's not possible in one query.
On the other hand the client can send three queries inside one batch request. So that it's just a single roundtrip to the server. Might be good enough.
You could add a webget to the service to perform this function. You would have to wrap the response objects though.
I have a WCF service that supports about 10 contracts, we have been supporting a client with all the business rules specific to this client now we have another client who will be using the exact same contracts (so we cannot change that) they will be calling the service exactly the same way the previous client called now the only way we can differentiate between the two clients is by one of the input parameters. Based on this input parameter we have to use a slightly different business logic – the logic for both the Client will be same 50% of the time the remainder will have different logic (across Business / DAL layers) . I don’t want to use if else statement in each of contract implementation to differentiate and reroute the logic also what if another client comes in. Is there a clean way of handling a situation like this. I am using framework 3.5. Like I said I cannot change any of the contracts (service / data contract ) or the current service calling infrastructure for the new client. Thanks
Can you possibly host the services twice and have the clients connect to the right one? Apart from that, you have to use some kind of if-else, I guess.
I can't say whether this is applicable to you, but we have solved a similar problem along this path:
We add a Header information to the message that states in which context some logic is called.
This information ends up in a RequestContext class.
We delegate responsibility of instantiating the implementation of the contract to a DI Container (in our case StructureMap)
We have defined a strategy how certain components are to be provided by the container:
There is a default for a component of some kind.
Attributes can be placed on specializations that denote for which type of request context this specialization should be used.
This is registered into the container through available mechanisms
We make a call to the Container by stating ObjectFactory.With(requestcontext).getInstance<CONTRACT>()
Dependencies of the service implementations are now resolved in a way that the described process is applied. That is, specializations are provided based ultimately on a request information placed in the header.
This is an example how this may be solvable.
