I am trying to write an SQL query which needs to be compatible on both a Sybase and Oracle database. The query looks like the following :
SELECT *
INTO new_table
FROM other_table
This query is working great on a Sybase database but not on an Oracle one. I found the equivalent for Oracle :
CREATE table new_table AS
SELECT *
FROM other_table
Is there a way to write a third query that would do the same and that can be executed on a Sybase and on an Oracle database?
As you found, Oracle supports INTO but doesn't use it like Sybase/SQL Server do. Likewise, Sybase doesn't support Oracle's extension of the CREATE TABLE syntax.
The most reliable means of creating a table & importing data between the systems is to use two statements:
CREATE TABLE new_table (
...columns...
)
INSERT INTO new_table
SELECT *
FROM OLD_TABLE
Even then, syntax is different because Oracle requires each statement to be delimited by a semi-colon when TSQL doesn't.
Creating a table & importing all the data from another table is a red flag to me - This is not something you'd do in a stored procedure for a production system. TSQL and PLSQL are very different, so I'd expect separate scripts for DML changes.
There is no query that would do what you want. These environments are very different.
It is possible.
SELECT * INTO new_table FROM existing_table;

How do I drop a few tables (e.g. 1 - 3) using the output of a SELECT statement for the table names? This is probably standard SQL, but specifically I'm using Apache Impala SQL accessed via Apache Zeppelin.
So I have a table called tables_to_drop with a single column called "table_name". This will have one to a few entries in it, each with the name of another temporary table that was generated as the result of other processes. As part of my cleanup I need to drop these temporary tables whose names are listed in the "tables_to_drop" table.
Conceptually I was thinking of an SQL command like:
DROP TABLE (SELECT table_name FROM tables_to_drop);
or:
WITH subquery1 AS (SELECT table_name FROM tables_to_drop) DROP TABLE * FROM subquery1;
Neither of these work (syntax errors). Any ideas please?
even in standard sql this is not possible to do it the way you showed.
in standard sql usually you can use dynamic sql which impala doesn't support.
however you can write an impala script and run it in impala shell but it's going to be complicated for such task, I would prepare the drop statement using select and run it manually if this is one-time thing:
select concat('DROP TABLE IF EXISTS ',table_name) dropstatements
from tables_to_drop

You can't. Oracle doesn't have local temporary tables, it doesn't work like that. But it doesn't need to. Oracle has a very different internal model from SQL Server which means a lot of SQL Server practices are unnecessary in Oracle. (To be fair SQL Server has neat things which Oracle doesn't, like ANSI 92 Joins for DML.)
The key insight is: you don't want to store the result of select/insert/delete/update or any result set into a local temporary table. That is something you had to do in T-SQL to achieve the end goal of implementing some business logic. But what you actually wanted to do in SQL Server and what you want to do in Oracle is write some code which delivers value to your organisation.
So, with that mindset in place, what do you need to do?
If you want to loop round a result set then perhaps a Cursor Loop is what you're looking for?
for rec in ( select * from some_table
where the_date = date '2018-02-01' )
loop
...
If you want to work on some data prior to inserting it into a data then perhaps you should use a PL/SQL collection:
type l_recs is table of some_table%rowtype;
But maybe you just need to understand Oracle's Transaction Management model. A lot of things are possible in pure SQL without any need for procedural framework.
Create temporary table :
create global temporary table
results_temp (column1, column2)
on commit preserve rows;
and then insert to it from your table:
insert into results_temp (column1, column2 )
SELECT column1,column2
FROM source_table
create global temporary table temp_table_name

As an alternative to using a sql task, you could use a global temporary table . That way you still have a session specific temp table, but you don't have to create it on the fly.
shouldn't it be as easy as an SQL task with the table sql?

I need a common select statement that returns a fixed value / row without the need of tables, which has to work with both Oracle & Sql Server.
eg for Oracle I know I can use:
select 'O' AS INDICATOR from DUAL;
But this won't work on Sql Server.
Can this be done with the same SQL on both Oracle & SQL Server?
AFAIK, you'll need different queries, unless you can find a table that exists both on the SQL Server and on the Oracle Server.
Oracle uses the DUAL table for dummy queries, while the syntax to just select a constant on SQL server is a bit simpler:
select 'O' as Indicator
will return a one-row recordset.
P.S. If you intend to write just standard SQL and have it work on both SQL Server and Oracle, note that there are lots and lots of differences, even if you do not use database-side code (stored procedures and functions).

You can't select data in Oracle without from statement. So you need to have a table in Oracle (common practice is to use standard table - Dual). The best solution if you really need to run same query on both database servers is to create Dual table with only one row in MS SQL. But really it's better to use different queries for different servers (maybe via some abstraction layer).
Use a common table expression (CTE) e.g.
WITH D (INDICATOR)
AS
(
SELECT *
FROM (
VALUES ('O')
) T (c1)
)
SELECT INDICATOR
FROM D;
Or more simply in line:
SELECT *
FROM (
VALUES ('O')
) D (INDICATOR)
You can create the DUAL table in SQL Server:
CREATE TABLE DUAL (DUMMY NVARCHAR(1) NOT NULL);
INSERT INTO DUAL VALUES ('X');
and then use the same query as in Oracle:
select 'O' AS INDICATOR from DUAL;

you need to create a linked server between the two servers and then you do something like this
INSERT INTO tblHistory
select * from LinkedServerNAme.DatabaseName.SchemaName.tblHistory

INSERT INTO newTable SELECT * FROM tblHistory
If the new table doesn't already exist, you can use SELECT INTO:
SELECT *
INTO new_table
FROM tblHistory
But that's the caveat - it has to be a new table, no data already in there.
Otherwise, use:
INSERT INTO new_table
SELECT x.* --preferrable to actually define the column list than use *
FROM OLD_TABLE x
