Split View in Cocoa Apps - objective-c

Does anybody know of any XCode extensions or ways to create the Split View based application seen in Cocoa Touch in Cocoa for use in a Mac application?
Examples I've seen are "Reeder for mac" and the latest Twitter Application in the App Store.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks

Cocoa has an NSSplitView class which can be used in Interface Builder, and you can always create custom split views or use open source ones such as RBSplitView or the one available in BWToolkit.

What additional functionality are you looking for that isn't provided by the already-available NSSplitView?
Reeder for Mac seems to use a simple NSSplitView with 3 subviews. (To create a split view with 3 views, drag the usual NSSplitView into a window or view in InterfaceBuilder, then drag an additional NSView into the NSSplitView in the "Outline Mode" of your IB document's window.)

Cocoa app design recommendation

I have a Mac app that needs to be based on multiple modules. That is, a single window with multiple views, and the default view with a menu. That menu should open one module on the default window and then if I select another module, the contents of the window should change with another view. Those views also have different states, so I made multiple views for each module.
In a nutshell, my app is a single AppDelegate.h/.m, a single xib file, with one NSWindow object and multiple NSView views. Those views have different states, so I load different other related NSViews.
To load a view, I use [window setContentView:viewNameView]; which I know that causes the old NSView to lose state, so I need to keep them all in memory for each module.
Is this the right approach?

You don't describe how and where you want the menu but a widely used method is to have a sourcelist on the left and the content on the right. You see this everywhere including Apples own apps.
If you create a sourcelist on the left of your window and place an NSBox on the right side.
Set up the sourcelist (NSOutlineView) to react to - outlineViewSelectionDidChange: which is an NSOutlineView delegate method.
Here you can check the identifier on the selected item in the menu and set the content view for the NSBox accordingly with - setContentView:

Edit: Depending on how many views you have it might be easier to have an NSTabView (in tabless mode) and just switch tabs in the - outlineViewSelectionDidChange: method. This is also widely used and the user won't see the difference.
You will want to look up NSWindowController for managing your window and xib, and NSViewController for managing views. The app delegate shouldn't do much (in fact you probably could remove the header file and merge it with .m).

Yes that will work. What you may end up needing as well, is a custom Navigation Controller. Unfortunately Cocoa doesn't have an NSNavigationController, so you'll have to write something on your own. But basically yeah what you'll do is swap out the contentView with the next view you want to display-- and keep a stack of views you've navigated to so you can support going back (or you could use a dictionary to add transition keys to create strongly linked transitions)

Another thing that you may want to keep in mind, which came up for me, is if your views are of different sizes. If they are, and you are using auto-layout, you will need to update the constraints to resize the window appropriately as views are swapped out

Cocoa Finder app List view

Being a starter in Cocoa Programming, I would like to know using the existing NSTableView can one be able to achieve Disclosure Button? Or one has to follow NSOutlineview?
From the above picture, on selecting the list view and getting a Folder[Super view] and getting the children using a Disclosure button
Also can a registered Mac Developer get Finder app's sample code?

NSOutlineView is just a subclass of NSTableView, so yes just use NSOutlineView to use the disclosure button.

And no, Apple never released the source code for Finder.

Working with storyboards in Xcode, how to handle massive Storyboard in iOS

I have been using the storyboard to make an application and currently there are many segues and several components. This is causing a ton of lag when I try to do anything inside the storyboard. Is there a way to hide components inside the storyboard? thanks.
+1, For the potentially features to improve Xcode. Now, there is no way you can hide those views (Not that I know). But I would suggest you to,
Hide the debug areas you don't need.
Hide the document outline while working with segues.
Why?
I think in this way whenever you are making changes, system does not have to repaint those unwanted views and long document outline. Probably this will be less laggy(I don't think there is a word like this)!
Work around
Divide your segue into different meta segues and then you can call those segues from your main segue. In that way you don't have to put each connection on one file but you condense it!
And here we go the documentation for it! Now you can get the story board by different file and then initiate with the UIViewController easily. Then you can just use old ways to segue between different ViewControllers.

You can split one huge storyboard into multiple small storyboards.
Select the view controllers that you want to move to a smaller storyboard, then
In the top menu, click Editor -> Refactor to Storyboard
Save the new storyboard with the desired name. XCode will auto generate all the required storyboard links from your large storyboard to this newly created small one.

Difference between NSWindowController Vs NSViewController

I am coming from iOS background and starting to learn Cocoa. On iOS unless we have multiple targets for iPad and iPhone we usually have one Window and manage the screen using UIViewControllers. Where every new screen will most of the time will map to a UIViewController.
However on cocoa this seems to be the otherway around where a new screen/window is manage by NSWindow and it's subcomponents are managed by NSViewController. So if I have multiple window app I should have separate NSWindowController for each window.
Is this approach correct or am I having a misunderstanding ?
With iPhone SDK and Leopard SDK, they introduced view controllers, or NSViewController and UIViewController. As their names suggest what they do is to manage views
The view controllers are for managing views. Current trend in UI design is Single Window, Multiple View. What it means is that there is one Window and inside of it, different group of views designed for different purpose can be swapped in and out. So, the View Controllers handles these for programmers for well-established pattern.
Currently view controllers are very important for iPhone and iPod touch programming, because the platform is based on Single-Window and Multiple View model. However, it doesn’t seem to me that using view controller is very popular for Mac.
how about the window controller like NSWindowController? Its counterpart, UIWindowController doesn’t exist for the iPhone and iPod touch environment, because there is only one window for those environment.
Unlike view controllers, the NSWindowController is for document based programs. Well, document based program can use multiple window. So, it is reasonable to think that NSWindowController is for document based programs as Apple’s document says.
I also come from iOS and started coding Mac apps a while ago, learning mostly from Apple's documentation.
My impression is that on the desktop, you almost never need NSViewControllers (one big exception would be a window with tabs and multiple views, like the GarageBand welcome screen).
Most of the time you have one NSWindowController per window. Learn first the relation between NSWindow and NSWindowController (and NSDocument, if you are making a document-based app).
Once you got that right, start experimenting with NSViewController.
UPDATE: It seems that since the introduction of storyboards for mac apps too, Apple expects that most of the view presentation logic should be migrated from the older NSWindowController to the newer NSViewController, more in line with how an iOS app is structured. I am not very knowledgeable on exactly where to draw the line, or what kind of code should remain in the window controller (or whether it still needs to be subclassed at all).
A Window Controller creates a traditional window and has all the traditional APIs.
A View Controller can also be shown outside of another view. It then gets a window frame but does not support the full traditional Window Controller API.
In addition to custom, modal, and show, a View Controller can also be presented in the modes sheet and popover.
So, View Controller has more presentation options and a more streamlined API but probably a few limitations in cases that are covered by the traditional Window Controller.

Best way to orchestrate multiple views in iOS without UITabBar or UINavigationBar?

I'm trying to create an iPhone app with a welcome screen that leads to two or three pretty disparate UIs; once you've drilled into one you're not going to have much use for the others, and each one is itself fairly complicated.
The designers are all web types and it looks like the "navigation" paradigm is the closest to what they want, but the breadcrumb-style navigation bar isn't.
If I set up a UINavigationController, can I then drive it with arbitrary buttons in the views?
And in general, is it possible to swap out the contents of a view programmatically?
And if so, what do I need to watch out for? (E.g., in Java if you change the contents of a JPanel you need to make sure it gets revalidated and repainted.)
Total iOS newbie here, coming from the Java world, super-explicit advice much appreciated. Using Monotouch, but happy to take Obj-C help and translate. :)
It's hard to tell you how to design your app with only that information, so I'll assume you want to do a drill-down thing like a UINavigation controller.
1- Yes, you can drive the UINavigationController from other ViewControllers, using methods like PushViewController() and PopViewController(). You can also hide the toolbar or some of the toolbar buttons if you want. You can find some great examples here.
2- Yes, you can change contents of a view. Views contains other views and you can add and remove them as you want.
3- The main thing to be careful about is to make sure that calls that update the view are done inside a InvokeOnMainThread(()=>{}) call. More info here.
