I've installed Visual Web Developer 2010, SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Management Studio 2008, using the MS Web Platform Installer 2.0. But whenever I wanna login, with Windows Authentication, to SQL Server with the Sql Management Studio it throws me an error: Cannot connect to (local)
And then under that, it says that it can't find the server or it can't access it.
I used to use the Sql Management Studio 2005 before and I could connect easily. But with this version it seems there are some issues. Can someone help me, please? Thank you.
Check in the "SQL Server Configuration Manager" the instance is correct if you are trying to access.
If it is not the default instance, you must access by < computer_name >\< instance_name > (eg: MyComputer\SQLEXPRESS)
If still you do not connect, try the replace < computer_name > by "localhost" or "127.0.0.1"
Do you have multiple versions of SQL Server installed?
If so, you will need to specify the full instance name.

So i just installed the Server Management and when i try to connect to server it gives me an error. I went to SQL Server Configuration Manager and there i dont have nothing. I have empty lists where the server instances should be. So i dont have any running local server.
So someone can tell me how i'm suppose to set some server instance or what i'm doing wrong ?
I installed the Server Management on Windows 7, 32-bit OS, and i need exacly this version of 2008 and i dont need the updated versions at this point.
SQL Server Management tool is just a GUI for you SQL Server. SQL Server is a separate installation. If you are trying to control a remote SQL Server you will need to add that to the management UI, local servers should show up automatically if you install SQL Server locally.
You can download SQL Server 2008 - Express Edition from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30438
It will install SQL Server which your Management Studio can connect.
I have just installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio. But I do not know what is the default login.
I searched over internet for solution, but no luck!
I have tried following solutions:
Server Type: Database Engine
Server Name: .
Authentication: Windows Authentication
and
Server Type: Database Engine
Server Name: .\SqlExpress
Authentication: Windows Authentication
But not sure why not working, I keep getting the following error:
Connect to Server
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an
error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL
Provider, error: 0 - The message received was unexpected or badly
formatted.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -2146893018)
There is no default login for windows authentication. I believe you need to add the current user as an administrator to login. Did you select SQL and Windows authentication and provide an SA password?
OP, has your computer had any recent updates? The SQL services tend to stop when system receives big updates, check that there are no services stopped.
The only reason I'm assuming this is your solution is because I see you can't even log in with Windows Authentication
It looks like you have only installed SQL Management Studio and not SQL Server with Tools i.e. SQL Server plus SSMS. I guess this is what you need?
It looks like you have only installed SQL Management Studio and not SQL Server with Tools i.e. SQL Server plus SSMS. I guess this is what you need? Also there is nothing wrong with your machine it is just that you require an instance of sql and you have only installed the management studio so you now just need to install sql server 2008 R2 express (FREE) I would suggest.
I have not connecting to SQL Server Management Studio. It shows me an error message like in 2nd picture. So, I could not connect to my local SQL Server 2012. How can I do it? Thanks in advance.
You just installed the management studio. You need to install SQl server. Here you need to install Sql Server and then Sql management studio.
Try . instead of Hello and see if that connects. If not, then you will have to install a new db instance because you don't have one.
Running the Repair Wizard from the SQL Server Installation Center has solved several of my connection issues when I've received errors connecting to localhost.
Choose Maintenance from the menu on the left, then choose Repair:
Two item have to be installed
SQL Server 2012 Management Studio Express
SQL Server 2012 Express
I had only installed only item 1, for this reason i am not getting any database in windows
authentication mode.
After then by the help of #marc_s, #CoOl and #Gin Uchiha i have solved my problem
by installing item 2.
And Thanks everyone for responding my question.
I have Installed Microsoft® SQL Server® 2014 Express , but I can't find SQL Server Services to run it in the "SQL Server Configuration Manager", so I can't connect to SQL server.
It's a problem because when I launch Sql Server Management Studio and that I try to connect me on the database server with server name "(local)", "localhost", "SQLEXPRESS",(local)/SQLEXPRESS, it doesn't work
I've seen in services.msc and I saw "SQL Server VSS Writer" launched automatically.
Do you have a solution ?
Thank you
If you download from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42299, make sure use SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe or SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe. SQLManagementStudio_x86_FRA.exe does not contains database engine.
I want to think that I had the same issue. When this happened to me, I went to the Configuration Manager only to learn that I had no Services whatsoever. I solved it by installing the SQL Server Express with with Advanced Services version from Microsoft.
I don't know whether you do need all its functionality, though. But what I do know is that it will solve your issue.
The problem is actually, I am pretty sure, that you have installed the Management Studio, not the Database Engine itself. You have to install the Database Engine. The response #Edward gave will lead you to the Database Engine for SQL Server Express 2014, that will do the trick.
I hope this helps to clarify what the problem was.
I had installed SQL Server 2008, but faced some complications with that. I then installed SQL Server 2005, and now installed SQL Server Management Studio for SQL Server 2005 successfully.
I am not able to connnect to the server name it suggests.
TITLE: Connect to Server
Cannot connect to POONAM-C586A95C\SQLEXPRESS.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This version of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express can only be used to connect to SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 servers. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionDlg)
It doesn't show any other option of SQL Server name, though I changed the name as I remembered but for no good.
How can this be solved?
It sounds as if you're trying to connect to the 2008 instance with the 2005 SSMS. It's not clear whether you un-installed the 2008 instance.
Suggest installing the SQL Server 2008 SSMS.
Confirm/modify as needed that you're running the SQL Server instance that you require. This will show you which instances are available.
I would also check to make sure that you're connecting to the correct port. I'm come across a similar error before and the solution was to specify the port to connect to, i.e.
compname\instancename,portnum
