Like it's written in the title, How can I download data from a server in my Cocoa Application?
So far I looked for, I found this.

If you're not downloading a lot of things in parallel and you're doing a simple GET request, the easiest way to do it is to dispatch a synchronous request to one of the global queues:

Error Handling Objective C during no response

In my app I use following methods to POST/GET data from a remote server.

I have basic error handling for no network connectivity, and app directs users to no network connectivity viewController. But I would like to account for situations when for instance server is down or data format of api has changed, Just wondering how would I catch such errors and prevent the app from crashing.
A couple of general points:
Don't do requests synchronously. Pass in a block with code that should run when the request completes. There's no reason to tie up a thread waiting for a completion handler to run, and it is even worse if that thread is basically continuously running as yours is.
If you absolutely must do that (why?), at least use a semaphore and wait on the semaphore. That way, you aren't burning a CPU core continuously while you wait.
The way you avoid crashing is to sanity check the data you get back, e.g.
Check the length of the data and make sure you didn't get nil/empty response data.
Assuming the server sends a JSON response, wrap your NSJSONSerialization parsing in an #try block, and if it fails or throws an exception, handle the error in some useful way.
Generally assume that all data is invalid until proven otherwise. Check to make sure the data makes sense.
If you're in charge of the server side, consider passing an API version as an argument, and as you modify things in the future, make sure that incompatible changes occur only when responding to clients that request a newer API version (or, alternatively, send a response that tells the client that it needs to be upgraded, and then refuse to provide data).

Incrementing a Variable from an Asynchronous Block in Objective-C

I have run into a bit of a conundrum with a service I am working on in objective-c. The purpose of the service is to parse through a list of core-data entities and download a corresponding image file for each object. The original design of the service was choking my web-server with too many simultaneous download requests. To get around that, I moved the code responsible for executing the download request into a recursive method. The completion handler for each download request will call the method again, thus ensuring that each download will wait for the previous one to complete before dispatching.
Where things get tricky is the code responsible for actually updating my core-data model and the progress indicator view. In the completion handler for the download, before the method recurses, I make an asynchronous call the a block that is responsible for updating the core data and then updating the view to show the progress. That block needs to have a variable to track how many times the block has been executed. In the original code, I could simply have a method-level variable with block scope that would get incremented inside the block. Since the method is recursive now, that strategy no longer works. The method level variable would simply get reset on each recursion. I can't simply pass the variable to the next level either thanks to the async nature of the block calls.
I'm at a total loss here. Can anyone suggest an approach for dealing with this?
Update:
As matt pointed out below, the core issue here is how to control the timing of the requests. After doing some more research, I found out why my original code was not working. As it turns out, the timeout interval starts running as soon as the first task is initiated, and once the time is up, any additional requests would fail. If you know exactly how much time all your requests will take, it is possible to simply increase the timeout on your requests. The better approach however is to use an NSOperationQueue to control when the requests are dispatched. For a great example of how to do this see: https://code-examples.net/en/q/19c5248
If you take this approach, keep in mind that you will have to call the completeOperation() method of each operation you create on the completion handler of the downloadTask.

But that was never the right way to solve the problem. Use a single persistent custom NSURLSession with your own configuration, and set the configuration's httpMaximumConnectionsPerHost.

How to wait till asynchronous request returns data before returning value

I have send asynchronous request to a website using the following code:

Then I used the following method defined inside NSURLConnectionDelegate to get and parse the data after the data fetching is completed.

And then in the method in which I send the asynchronous request, I return parsedData. But the returning should only happen after the data fetching is completed and hence parsing is done. I know the question arises if that is what I need then why I am not using synchronous request. It is because I don't want my other methods to hang up when the loading is going on in background.
Quick answer : if it's asynchronous, you don't want to wait the asynchronous method.
One of the bests option would be :
The object calling wanting the data should set itself as the object that runs the asynchronous method, and in didReceiveData, you call a method such as updateData:(NSString *)parsedData, which handles the newly received data
The object calling the method should use KVO to observe any change on a property of the object that runs the asynchronous method.

Asynchronous requests run on separate thread, So we don't need to worry about handling view lockup.
If you want send a synchronous request then you have to use GCD to achieve the same. And various other details like, how much data is send/received etc. will not be available in synchronous request.
Synchronous request are helpful if your code next state is dependent on data received in response of the request.
As far as i understand you want that to return data after web call is complete. so i would suggest that create any method for webcall that returns NSData and do something like this:

You have this delegate method which will execute when all the downloading is completed from tha server successfully.Use this method to do the remaining process

Ok this method gets executed when the all data is recieved.What you should do is to collect all data from -didReceiveData delegate method and then use it to parse in this method.

NSURLConnection sendSynchronousRequest/sendAsynchronousRequest fails after app killed by iOS

All the server connections in my app goes the same way:
dispatch_async to a 2nd thread.
sendSynchronousRequest
fail/success blocks on main thread.
The following is not the full code, just the concept:

Well the app works great! I can use it for thousands of server connections, and it always works when I run a fresh load of the app.
The issue starts when the following occurs:
Send the app to BG.
Wait some time...
The app get killed by the iOS.
Open again, the iOS loads the whole app from scratch.
(see splash screen followed by the first screen, not the one I left to BG..)
In that scenario I get NSURLConnectionErrors!! All kind of them! Code 1003, Code 1009, Code 9... Just name it!
I get errors for all server connections that starts right when the app loads. Any other connections after that works fine! including the refresh of the ones that got failed!
It almost feel like i'm trying to reach my server too quick or too early, BUT I do check and pass a reachabillity test before intiating a connection.
Could really use some help here. Thanks in advance.
UPDATE: As suggested below, tried to use sendAsynchronousRequest - gave me the exact same behaviour. (err: 1001 this time).
OK got it! The appDelegate built the tabBar wich loaded all viewControllers wich sent some NSURLConnections... So for the iOS thought it's too long to wait for the responses and failed them all! (No idea way the first launch is ok and only after the app killed its not)
Anyway, I changed all server loads to perform with selector with 0.1 delay. That way the appDelegate could finish running and all is GOOD! :)
You should look at using this method and send the data Asynchronously

the NSOpertationQueue mainQueue uses the mainthread however allowing you to update UI also on the main thread i.e an activityindicator for example..

NSNotificationCenter - Way to wait for a notification to be posted without blocking main thread?

I'm using an AFNetworking client object which makes an asynchronous request for an XML document and parses it.
Also using NSNotificationCenter to post a notification when the document has finished parsing.
Is there a way to wait for a notification to be posted without blocking the main thread?
E.g code:

As it is right now I'll see "Fetch Complete." in the debug console before the fetch has been completed.
I tried adding a BOOL flag to the TLHTTPClient class:

When this class receives the notification it sets RESTClient.fetchingFlag = FALSE; which should technically kill the while loop right? Except my while loop runs infinitely ?!

You need no code. Don't put anything in the method after you start the fetch, and nothing will happen. Your program will "wait" (it will actually be processing other input) until the notification is recieved.
In the notification handler method, put all the stuff that you need to do when the fetch is completed. This is (one of) the point(s) of notifications and other callback schemes -- your object won't do anything further until it gets the notification that it's time to act.

That's exactly how it works already.
If you don't need to inform multiple objects upon completion of the task, you could add a completion handler (objc block) to the -fetchActiveUser:withPassword: method (so it would become something like -fetchActiveUser:withPassword:completionHandler: and add the code to be executed in the completion handler.
An example, lets say your -fetchActiveUser:withPassword:completionHandler: method looks like the following:

The completion handler will be called whenever the task is finished. It will either return a TLUser object or an Error if something went wrong (bad connection, data format changed while parsing, etc...).
