Msi: Can dword values in Registry Table expressed in hexadecimal number? - scripting

Preceding registry value data by a number-sign (#) causes the value interpreted as a dword in decimal number. This is OK and I have no problem with it. I'm just curious, is there a way to express it in a hexadecimal number.

The "#x" prefix understands hex but produces a REG_BINARY value instead of a REG_DWORD.

Bro convert hex string to int

I am using bro to read bytes directly of the payload of a packet.
I have a string value "\x10" and I want to get the decimal value of off that.
I know that bro support directly printing hex to decimal:
print 0x10;
Question is, how do I convert that string similarly to its integer version?
The best you can do is strip off the "\x" portion, and run it through 2 BIFs:
bytestring_to_count(hexstr_to_bytestring("10"));

Returning Unicode Name With Code Point

I know how to return a Unicode character from a code point. That's not what I'm after. What I want to know is how to return the name associated with a particular code point. For example, The code point for 🍀 is 1F340. And its name is FOUR LEAF CLOVER. Is it possible for us to return this name with its code point? I've read about 100 topics involving Unicode. But I haven't see one discussing my question. I hope that's possible.

Retrieve the name of a Unicode character.
Depending on nameChoice, the character name written into the buffer is the "modern" name or the name that was defined in Unicode version 1.0. The name contains only "invariant" characters like A-Z, 0-9, space, and '-'. Unicode 1.0 names are only retrieved if they are different from the modern names and if the data file contains the data for them. gennames may or may not be called with a command line option to include 1.0 names in unames.dat.
Parameters
code The character (code point) for which to get the name. It must be 0<=code<=0x10ffff.
nameChoice Selector for which name to get.
buffer Destination address for copying the name. The name will always be zero-terminated. If there is no name, then the buffer will be set to the empty string.
bufferLength ==sizeof(buffer)
pErrorCode Pointer to a UErrorCode variable; check for U_SUCCESS() after u_charName() returns.
Returns
The length of the name, or 0 if there is no name for this character. If the bufferLength is less than or equal to the length, then the buffer contains the truncated name and the returned length indicates the full length of the name. The length does not include the zero-termination.
ICU is the right approach, but it's even simpler than Chris said. Foundation includes ICU already, for various text processing functions, including CFStringTransform(). Its transform parameter accepts "any valid ICU transform ID defined in the ICU User Guide for Transforms".
One of ICU's transforms is Any-Name:
Converts between characters and their Unicode names in curly braces. For example:
., ⇆ {FULL STOP}{COMMA}
(The syntax isn't exactly as documented, but it's close enough you can figure it out.)
There's also an Any-Hex transform which can be used for translating to/from the codepoint hex value.

Hexadecimal numbers vs. hexadecimal enocding (with base64 as well)

Encoding with hexadecimal numbers seems to be different from using hexadecimals to represent numbers. For example, then hex number 0x40 to me should be equal to 64, or BA_{64}, but when I put it through this hex to base64 converter, I get the output: QA== which to me is equal to some number times 64. Why is this?
Also when I check the integer value of the hex string deadbeef I get 3735928559, but when I check it other places I get: 222 173 190 239. Why is this?
Addendum: So I guess it is because it is easier to break the number into bit chunks than treat it as a whole number when encoding? That is pretty confusing to me but I guess I get it.

In summary, base64 specifies a specific encoding, which involves using different values for letters than their ASCII encoding.
For the second part, one source is treating the entire string as a 32 bit integer, and the other is dividing it into bytes and giving the value of each byte.

Read input in NASM, and store it whole into a variable

what is the method by which I can read the input of the user, say the input is "500"
then store this number in a variable?
The only method I know would be to store them character by character with possibly the need of register offsets.
Is there any other way, preferably storing the number directly?
i.e. something like:

Ahhh... DJGPP, that'd be dos I guess. Look into int 21h/0Ah (0Ah in ah). Or you might be better off with the readfile subfunction (3Fh ???) on stdin. Look it up in Ralf Brown's Interrupt list.
In any case, what you're going to get is the characters '5', '0', and '0' - 35h, 30h, 30h. It will take some processing to get the number 500 out of this. If you're reading numbers from left to right, zero up a register to use as "result so far". Read a character from your input buffer. If it's a valid decimal digit, subtract '0' to convert character to number, multiply "result so far" by ten, and add in your new number. Repeat until you run out of characters.

Hsqldb - how to remove the padding on char fields

I'm finding that Char fields are being padded.
Is there any way to stop this happening.
I've tried using the property
SET PROPERTY "sql.enforce_strict_size" FALSE
but doesn't seem to help.
Indeed, the MySQL docs specify that "When CHAR values are retrieved, trailing spaces are removed." This is odd, as other databases seem to always keep the padding (i can confirm that for Oracle). The SQL-92 standard indicates that right-padded spaces are part of the char, for example in the definition of the CAST function on p. 148. When source (SV=source value) and target (TV=target value, LTD=length of target datatype), then:
ii) If the length in characters of SV is larger than LTD, then
TV is the first LTD characters of SV. If any of the re-
maining characters of SV are non-<space> characters, then a
completion condition is raised: warning-string data, right
truncation.
iii) If the length in characters M of SV is smaller than LTD,
then TV is SV extended on the right by LTD-M <space>s.
Maybe that's just another one of MySQL's many oddities and gotchas.
And to answer your question: if you don't want the trailing spaces, you should use VARCHAR instead.
I thought 'char' by definition are space padded to fill the field. They are considered fixed lenght and will be space padded to be fixed length.
The data type 'varchar' is defined as variable char where they are not space padded to fill the field.
I could be wrong though since I normally work on SQL Server.
