Requests to www.domainname.com and domainname.com should display index.html, not index.php as it does now.

I tried adding a DirectoryIndex index.html to the file, but that did not work. I suspect that has something to do with the mod_rewrite stuff, but being an apache-n00b I am really just grasping for straws.
Can I add a rewriterule, or what should I do?
Strangely, your .htaccess works fine for me and I get index.html when I request the directory.
You might try inserting this rule:
RewriteCond ^/$ /index.html [L]
If that doesn't work, get some debug information:
RewriteLog "/some/writable/path/rewrite.log"

I renamed the server.php in the Laravel root folder to index.php and copy the .htaccess file from /public directory to Laravel root folder. But it is not working.
I placed below code in .htaccess file

Reset anything you have changed back to the default.
In your apache virtual host configuration, ensure you have the DocumentRoot correct (it will be something like /var/www/html/laravelproject/public).
You should not need to make any changes to the .htaccess file in the public folder as this handles rewriting the url to remove index.php. However, in some environments, I have had to add
RewriteBase /laravelproject
to the .htaccess in the public folder.

To summarise, I added the following to the .htaccess file, directly below the existing index.php entry:

Go to httpd.conf file, search for the line DocumentRoot and change it to where ever your index.php is. For example:

I'm currently attempting to install Anchor CMS on my Apache server.
I have successfully deployed it to the server. That is, when I go to www.domain.com, I am greeted with the default-themed front page and a test post :)
However, if I try to click the post, or go to the admin area, I get an error such as:
Not Found: The requested URL /posts/hello-world was not found on this server.
However, if I follow the (in this case) post link using a direct link, such as:
www.domain.com/index.php/posts/hello-world
It works completely fine. So, it appears to be a problem with the rewriting.

Unfortunately, I did the same steps and nothing works. Just to recap, this is how my VirtualHost looks:

See your server configuration file (httpd.conf). There should be a statement as follows:
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
If the line starts with #, remove the # character. You can also use the command:
a2enmod rewrite
Also, try to shift your Rewrites outside of the IfModule block.

Since 2 days I have been trying to get my cake app working (using German 1&1 hosting). The desired address is: http://www.bzalewski.de/k/front. If you open it, you can see, it's there but without images and css. Also this: http://www.bzalewski.de/k/front/art/discover doesn't work (but it does locally with XAMPP. There is no routing, just ArtController --> public function discover()).

Just to mention it: my local XAMPP installation works with standard .htaccess files without any problems.
Try adding this line in the root .htaccess (the htaccess in /k/front/ folder) after RewriteEngine On:

Edit : I did not see that you put /k/front/ everywhere in the htaccess
Then add RewriteBase / with you version of the htaccess
OR add RewriteBase /k/front/ with the default htaccess (without /k/front/ in the RewriteRules )

You can easily remove this file by using a .htaccess file with some simple rules. Here is an example of such a file, using the "negative" method in which everything is redirected except the specified items:

In the above example, any HTTP request other than those for index.php, images, and robots.txt is treated as a request for your index.php file.

If this won't help, your problem likely in Apache configuration.
Then provide your httpd.conf and any other relevant configurations, not only virtual-hosts.
