I was using SQL server 2005 express edition and, therefore was limited by a data base 4 giga size. I decided to install SQL server 2005 developper (64bits) in order to be able to go beyond 4 gigabytes data base size.
The installation program run with no error message on a Windows 7 64 bits, but did not install the SQL server Management Studio. After a couple of investigations, I found out and run the installation program on CD2 SqlRun_Tools.msi which installed the missing tools. I then installed the SQL server SP3 package.
When I opened the Management Studio, the 3 instances of SQL 2005 Express where there but no SQL 2005 developer edition (new) instance was shown.
I restored the system, then removed each one of the SQL server Express instances, then fully reinstalled the SQL 2005 developper edition with its default instance name, but again no SQLserver 2005 Developper instance was listed on the SQL Server management studio. Surprise! the 3 instances from SQL 2005 Express edition (which were all previously uninstalled) were still there, but not accessible.
I have tried to access the new SQL server Developper through my code but the instance has not been found either.
All connection strings have been working for a long time with SQL Express edition and are correct.
I have also checked that SQl server and SQl browser were started.
I would really appreciate your help.

In my client machine, the database that he's using is SQL Server 2012 and in my machine i have SQL Server 2005.. so i want to install another instance and a friend told me that i dont need to install the SQL Server 2012 Standard (the one that they have) and with the SQL Server 2012 Express will work.. is that ok?
I really don't know the real difference in working with SQL Server Express 2012 and SQL Server Standard 2012 (with the same database).
On of the major differences is that with express you not be able to back ups over the network. Local backups only. When I do back ups from the SqlExpress Server Manager Studio it doesn't recognize mounted drives. Check out this for a more formal approach to your question

SQL Server 2008 (655) and SQL Server 2008 R2 (661) are not the same thing (though it is a common misconception - a lot of people think they're the same because Microsoft made a terrible, terrible, terrible naming decision, making 2008 R2 sound like a service pack).
You can't attach/restore a 2008 R2 database to a 2008 instance, period. Though there are several workarounds (that also apply for attaching 2012 -> 2008, 2008 -> 2005, 2008 R2 -> 2005, etc). You can either upgrade the engine you're trying to connect to up to 2008 R2, or you can extract the schema / data from the database using generate scripts wizard, import/export data wizard, SSIS, or 3rd party tools like Red Gate SQL Compare (for a full list of alternatives see this blog post).

If you are developing .NET based apps in visual studio 2010, then they will typically support all versions of Microsoft SQL Server. That does not mean you install SQL server INSIDE of visual studio, just that you can connect to a SQL Server instance running somewhere.
If you are asking "Where can I get a copy of SQL Server that my university is using?", that depends. For development, you can use a SQL Express installation on your local machine that matches the major release of SQL (2005, 2008, 2008R2, 2012), or you can request the university (or someone else) grant you access to an existing SQL instance.
I have SQL Server 2012 and I'm trying to attach a db which was previously used with SQL Server 2012, surprisingly I'm getting the following error:
The database 'DatabaseName' cannot be opened because it is version
706. This server supports version 622 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported.
I don't really understand how this could happen since like I said it was used with same 2012 version. What am I doing wrong? How can I make it work? Please explain in detail how this can be resolved.

The error sounds like the server you are trying to attach the database to is not SQL Server 2012. This may be the version of Management Studio / Management Studio Express you're using, but I suspect SELECT ##VERSION; will tell you something different. It may just be a connection string mixup if you have multiple instances of SQL Server installed, otherwise you should download and install SQL Server 2012 Express from here.

It sounds like you had the following configuration and source databases:
SQL Server 2008 SP3 (ver 10.0...) - database engine
SQL Server Management Studio 2012 (ver 11.0...) - management tools
a database that was created with SQL Server 2012 (version 706)
As mentioned you could install SSMS for SQL Server 2008 (after you uninstall SSMS for SQL Server 2012). Then you would have to script your database for that version and re-run the script via 'Tasks>Script...', remembering to set the target server version as shown below.
After scripting you can then use the import/export wizard to export and then inport the data into the new (downgraded database), assuming the database had no 2012-only datatypes (such as sequences).
Another consideration is database compatibility level as shown below. You can have a SQL Server 2012 instance which hosts databases with various compatibility levels.
Using SELECT ##VERSION works very well for me. Your Database Engine is connected to a 2008 DB which certainly doesn't allow you to attach. Once I change my Database Engine to connect to 2012 DB, it works for me.
Check your Database Engine connection. You can be working on 2012 Management Studio yet connecting to 2008 DB. This is what happened to me and I have solved it use SELECT ##VERSION.

Yes, however, once you attach a 2005 database into a 2008 instance, you have upgraded it to 2008 never to go back to 2005 unless you export the data into some universal format. You can however, have both engines running simultaneously and can use either set of management tools to see either database (although some features will only work with the 2008 management studio working against the 2008 database)
Yes. Both sets of tools (including Management Studio) and services can coexist on the same machine (I have this very setup). The only thing you cannot do is to have both engines listening on the same port. Thus, one of the two will have to be a named instance.

2) You can view 2005 database under 2008 management studio, not sure about hosting them under a 2008 instance though. I'm fairly confident they do, but not sure if it's native or via converting to a 2008 database.

Note that you can't have 2005 MS and 2008 MS (management studio) installed on the same OS. This was based on my experience a long while ago when 2008 first came out, I got an error message stating that I couldn't install it because of a previous version (2005) being installed, or something akin to that. Turns out it has changed.
I already have sql server 2008 installed and now need to install 2005 express as well. When I try this, the installation fails with: "An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer cannot be found" - any ideas anyone?
Yes, you can definitely have both SQL Server 2005 (any edition) and SQL Server 2008 (any edition) on the same machine. But of course - you cannot have both be the default instance (which you access without specific instance name). Typically that's not a problem since the Express editions default to the .\SQLEXPRESS instance name. Just something to remember when installing.
HOWEVER: you need to make sure to first install your SQL Server 2005 and then the 2008 edition. It won't work the other way around, unfortunately.
So in your case: you'll need to first uninstall SQL Server 2008m, then install SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL Server 2008 on top of that again.
