you need to check the table in the DB - one of the columns is either indexed and can only contain unique values, or has some other limitation.
you enter a data into that column that it can not hold.
Try to "UPDATE" the Data Manually directly on the table and you will see what is wrong...

It seems you just don't have the file F:\ACCESS DATABASE\search.mdb.
Check the path to your access database file.

The error message that you point to reads:
'F:\ACCESS DATABASE\search.mdb' is not a valid path.
Apparently you mistyped the path to the db in the conn.ConnectString = ... line.

Adding data from Text boxes directly to database and viewing updated gridview

still very new to this and can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. Quick run-through on what I'm trying to accomplish. I have a datagridview (3 columns - Id, Name, Address) that is connected to a local .mdf database file, that I'm able to search through using a search textbox. My goal NOW is to submit records into the database directly using 2 text fields and the Id field to automatically increment. (Id++, txtName.Text, txtAddress.Text) and to use a send button(btnSend) to activate this event.(PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, MY GOAL IS TO HAVE EVERYONE INCLUDING THE NEW RECORD SHOW UP IN THE DATAGRIDVIEW AND FOR THE NEW ROW TO BE INSERTED DIRECTLY TO THE DATABASE AND SAVE ANY CHANGES) I've been hammering at this for a couple days now and would appreciate any help. Below is my code, but please keep in mind I'm still new and trying to figure this language out so if there's any unnecessary code, please do let me know... Also if you want to help with one additional thing, maybe some code on how to export that table to a different file from an export button. Thanks! I'm currently also getting an error saying "Cannot find table 0." when I click the btnSend button.
Public Sub btnSend_Click(ByVal sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles btnSend.Click
Try
Dim connectionString As String
Dim connection As SqlConnection
Dim ds As New DataSet("Table")
Dim dataset As New DataSet()
Dim sqlInsert As String
Dim sqlSelect As String
Dim Id As Integer = 5
Dim newRow As DataRow = dataset.Tables(0).NewRow()
connectionString = "Data Source=(LocalDB)\v11.0;AttachDbFilename=""" & My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "\Database1.mdf"";Integrated Security=True;"
sqlInsert = "INSERT INTO Table (#Id, #Name, #Address) VALUES (" & Id & ", '" & txtName.Text & "','" & txtAddress.Text & "')"
sqlSelect = "SELECT * FROM Table"
connection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
Dim da As New SqlDataAdapter()
connection.Open()
da.Fill(ds)
Using da
da.SelectCommand = New SqlCommand(sqlSelect)
da.InsertCommand = New SqlCommand(sqlInsert)
da.InsertCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("Id", SqlDbType.Int, 4, Id))
da.InsertCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("Name", SqlDbType.NText, 50, txtName.Text))
da.InsertCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("Address", SqlDbType.NText, 50, txtAddress.Text))
Using dataset
da.Fill(dataset)
newRow("Id") = Id
newRow("Name") = txtName.Text
newRow("Address") = txtAddress.Text
dataset.Tables(0).Rows.Add(newRow)
da.Update(dataset)
End Using
Using newDataSet As New DataSet()
da.Fill(newDataSet)
End Using
End Using
connection.Close()
Catch ex As Exception

Dim updatedRowCount As String = gvDataViewer.RowCount - 1

I get only column headers using sqldatareader and datagridview

I have a SQL Server 2008 express with a database and a table and using VB 2010 express.
I am trying to read from that table with sqldatareader, but I only one row in the datagridview with the column headers, no row with data.
What am I doing wrong? (I'm a newbe).
The connection string is :
Data Source=xxxxxxxxxx\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=Masteca_Inventory;Integrated Security=True
Dim searchStr As String = ""
Dim connetionString As String
Dim sqlCnn As SqlConnection
Dim sqlCmd As SqlCommand
Dim sqlStr As String
Public bindingSource1 As New BindingSource()
connetionString = My.Settings.SQLconnSTR
sqlStr = "SELECT * FROM Piese WHERE " & searchStr 'searchStr is OK I fill it elsewhere
sqlCnn = New SqlConnection(connetionString)
Try
sqlCnn.Open()
sqlCmd = New SqlCommand(sqlStr, sqlCnn)
Dim sqlReader As SqlDataReader = sqlCmd.ExecuteReader()
Using sqlReader
Dim dTable As New DataTable
dTable.Load(sqlReader)
bindingSource1.DataSource = dTable
End Using
SearchReport.DataGridView1.DataSource = bindingSource1
'SearchReport is another form
sqlReader.Close()
sqlCmd.Dispose()
sqlCnn.Close()
SearchReport.Show()
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.ToString)
End Try
You are not reading the data as a group (you are fetching only one result).
You will need to adjust the code to use a While sqlReader.Read;
Example;
Dim sqlReader As SqlDataReader = sqlCmd.ExecuteReader()
While sqlReader.Read()
Try
'Do the work needed
rowResult += sqlReader(0) 'This will contain the result script
Catch ex As Exception
'Catch exception
End Try
End While
Something like that should work (I have not tested the code but the concept is the same).
PS - I strongly suggest you adjust your script to add a Where clause and / or the columns needed (Select * is not a "good practice")
Hope this helps.

fetching single value form database in vb.net

this my database table
id name
1   abc
2    xyz
it i enter 1 then respective value "abc" display in different text box???
Private Sub butsea_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles butsea.Click
Dim dset As New DataSet
Dim da As SqlDataAdapter
Dim myCmd As New SqlCommand
Try
myConn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=THEONE\PARTH;Initial Catalog=testdatabase;Integrated Security=True;"
myConn.Open()
Dim avalue As String = (InputBox("Input Student Id", "Search Student")).ToString
txt_id.Text = avalue
da = New SqlDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM studentdetails where student_id= '" & txt_id.Text & "", myConn)
If dset.Tables(0).Rows.Count > 0 Then
'what should i write here
Else
MsgBox("No Record Found")
End If
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.Message)
Finally
myConn.Close()
End Try
End Sub
If you need to fetch just a single value - using DataAdapter and DataSet is overkill. Use SqlCommand.ExecuteScalar method and in your query instead of "SELECT * ..." do a "SELECT YOURFIELD ... ".
this way you don't have to jump thru hoops building a dataset, checking number of rows etc. and just check returned value for Nothing instead.
UPDATE Here is your code modified to use ExecuteScalar
Private Sub butsea_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles butsea.Click
Dim myCmd As SqlCommand
Dim myConn As New SqlConnection
Dim oResult As Object
Try
myConn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=THEONE\PARTH;Initial Catalog=testdatabase;Integrated Security=True;"
myConn.Open()
Dim avalue As String = (InputBox("Input Student Id", "Search Student")).ToString
txt_id.Text = avalue
myCmd = New SqlCommand("SELECT student_name FROM studentdetails where student_id= '" & txt_id.Text & "'", myConn)
oResult = myCmd.ExecuteScalar()
If oResult IsNot Nothing Then
txt_name.text = oResult.ToString
Else
MsgBox("No Record Found")
End If
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.Message)
Finally
myConn.Close()
End Try
End Sub
This code assumes that database field that u need to display is called student_name and that you added TextBox called txt_name to your form.
You need to add other textboxes for every field you want to show.
(For example a textbox called txtStudentName could be used for the name, and so on for other fields present in the table studentdetails).
The correct way to query your database (leaving out other methods like using a SqlDataReader) should be the following
Dim dset As New DataSet
Dim da As SqlDataAdapter
Try
myConn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=THEONE\PARTH;Initial Catalog=testdatabase;Integrated Security=True;"
myConn.Open()
Dim avalue As String = (InputBox("Input Student Id", "Search Student")).ToString
txt_id.Text = avalue
' prepare the adapter with a commandtext. Do not use string concatenation from user input'
da = New SqlDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM studentdetails where student_id=#id", myConn)
da.SelectCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("#id", txt_id.Text)
' Fill the dataset'
da.Fill(dset)
If dset.Tables(0).Rows.Count > 0 Then
' Supposing you have a field for the studentname in the first column of the returned
' datatable rows(rowindex)(columnindex)
txtStudentName.Txt = dset.Tables(0).Rows(0)(0).ToString()
.....
' Set the text property of other textboxes for other fields to show'
Else
MsgBox("No Record Found")
End If

operator/operand type mismatch when update dbf file

i have a program needs to update data in dbf file. but it keeps appear error 'operator/operand type mismatch'. here is sample code :
Dim con As OleDbConnection = New OleDbConnection("Provider=vfpoledb;Data Source=C:\folder\paytran.dbf;Collating Sequence=machine;")
Try
Dim strSQL As String = "UPDATE paytran.dbf SET workhr = 20 WHERE empno = 102"
Dim cmd As OleDbCommand = New OleDbCommand(strSQL, con)
con.Open()
Dim myDA As OleDbDataAdapter = New OleDbDataAdapter(cmd)
Dim myDataSet As DataSet = New DataSet()
' Using DataAdapter object fill data from database into DataSet object
myDA.Fill(myDataSet, "MyTable")
' Binding DataSet to DataGridView
DGV.DataSource = myDataSet.Tables("MyTable").DefaultView
con.Close()
con = Nothing
Catch ex As Exception
MessageBox.Show(ex.Message, "Error Select Data")
Finally
If con IsNot Nothing Then
con.Close()
End If
End Try
please help me..
Its your connection string. The connection string should only have to point to the PATH where the data files are located, then all the SQL based commands will by default be able to see any .DBF tables IN that path (or forward if subpaths exists).
Data Source=C:\folder
instead of
Data Source=C:\folder\paytran.dbf
So, now if you have 30 tables in the "C:\folder", you can now query from ALL of them as needed.
You need to explicitly open and close the DBF. Try:
Dim strSQL As String = "Use paytran in 0 shared;UPDATE paytran SET workhr = 20 WHERE empno = 102;use in select('paytran')"

saving datatable into two databases

I have code to save the information in mydatatable into the database and also into my Audit file I am using the code below. however the first part of the code works great but the second part is not doing the job .Why is it that the same code is not working for the other database.it is not inserting the datatable into the Audit file
