I have Fedora 11 and trying to get Xen working (which I think it is already) but the Virtual Machine Manager cannot find the hypervisor.
When starting Virtual Machine Manager, I receive the following error
Error determining default hypervisor. Could not populate a default connection. Make sure the appropriate virtualization packages are installed (kvm, qemu, etc.) and that libvirtd has been restarted to notice the change. A hypervisor connection can be manually added via File -> Add Connection
I've restarted libvirtd a few times and tried connecting manually but can't work it out.
Some useful information:
# lsof | grep xen
libvirtd 2962 root mem REG 253,0 19776 13379 /usr/lib/libxenstore.so.3.0.0
# service libvirtd status
libvirtd (pid 2962) is running...
after looking into the issue a bit, I found xen isn't really supported after Fedora v8
instead I've got QEMU working, took 10 seconds to install

I am trying out okd but it fails for me during the oc cluster up port check step. The debug output is not very verbose to be polite. Do you have an idea what to look for.

Has the user you are running the command as enough priveledges to open privileged ports (ports <1024) on your host machine?

I have a machine in production running an elixir application (no access to iex, only to erl) and I am tasked with running an analysis on why we are consuming so much CPU. The idea here would be to launch observer, check the processes tab and see the processes with the most reductions.
How am I connecting?
To connect I am following a tutorial from a blog:

Their instructions are as follows:
launch the app in the production machine with a cookie and a name
from local run: ssh user#public_ip "epmd -names" to get the name of the app and the port used
from local create a ssh tunnel to the remote machine: ssh -L 4369:user#public_ip:4369 -L 42877:user#public_ip:42877 user#public_ip (4369 is the epmd port by default, 42877 is the port of the app)
from local connect to the remote machine using the node's name: erl -name "user#app_name" -setcookie "mah_cookie" -hidden -run observer
Problem
And now in theory I should be able to use observer on the machine. Instead however I am greeted with the following error:

So, after scouring the dark side of internet, I decided to use sudo journalctl -f to check all the logs of the machine and I found this:

so it tells me, unknown host ?? I am confused since 99.999.99.999 is the public IP of the machine itself!

What am I doing wrong?
I read that in older versions of erlang I can’t monitor a machine with observer if they are in different networks (which is the case, because I want to monitor this machine from my localhost) but I didn’t find any information regarding this in modern days.
If this is in fact impossible, what alternatives do I have?
Solution
After 3 days of non-stop searching, I finally found something that works.
To summarize I am putting it here everything I did.
All steps in local machine:
get the ports from the remote server:
> ssh remote-user#remote-ip "epmd -names"
epmd: up and running on port 4369 with data:
name super_duper_app at port 43175
create a ssh tunel with the ports:
ssh remote-user#remote-ip -L4369:localhost:4369 -L43175:localhost:43175
On another terminal in your local machine, run a iex terminal with the cookie the app in your remote server is using. Then connect to it and start observer:
iex --name observer#127.0.0.1 --cookie super_duper_cookie
Node.connect :"super_duper_app#127.0.0.1"
> true
:observer.start
With observer started, select the machine from the Nodes menu.
Possible setbacks
If you have tried this and it didn't work there are a few things you can check for:
Check if the EPMD port on your local machine is free, if not, kill the process using it and free it.

I have installed virtualmin in other vps and did not have such issue before. I meet the same issue in this vps also if I change operating system. What could I do to solve? Thanks
I wanted to install virtualmin on Ubuntu 16.04; I met same issues (as in your log); the error is quite cryptic and unexpected; virtualmin setup worked flawlessly in other vps.
A particular thing of my new vps is that ipv6 is not supported; it is probably the same in your case. Working on this information I made virtualmin work as expected, with the following steps:
fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04
apt-get install dovecot-common dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d
(these packages are the part related to dovecot for Ubuntu, taken from virtualmin install.sh). This gave issues.
Then edited: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf file.. uncommenting the line "listen = *, ::" and setting it to "listen = *" (listen just to ipv4 instead of also ipv6)
then again "apt-get install dovecot-common dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d", to check that installation finely completes.
install virtualmin: "/bin/sh install.sh"
service apache2 restart
In /etc/hosts comment the rows related to ipv6 (those with ::)
remove the "ipv6=1" line from /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf
/etc/init.d/webmin restart (now webmin should be up and working at https://yourip:10000)
I've tried these steps to install VirtualMin on my VPS Ubuntu 16.04. I am damn sure it will work for you.
Here are some prerequisites of the VirtualMin on Ubuntu:
-> You must have a new Ubuntu VPS or system with at 1 GB RAM.
-> You must have root access or access to a user with Sudo privileges.
-> A valid hostname set on your server’s primary IP address.
-> Two registered custom nameservers for Virtualmin.
Steps:
Step 1: Update your system with the latest available version:
Linux command: apt-get update
Step 2: Set Hostname and FQDN:
For Virtualmin to work properly, you need to configure the hostname and FQDN on the server itself by editing the /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts files, as well as update your DNS settings so DNS lookups resolve properly.
Linux command: hostname
To change the hostname for your server, open the file /etc/hostname in your editor:
Linux command: sudo nano /etc/hostname
Delete the current hostname and replace it with your hostname:
Use just the hostname, not the entire FQDN, in this file. For example, if your FQDN is demo.yourdomainname.com, enter demo in this file.
Save the file and exit the editor.
Next, add both the hostname and FQDN in the /etc/hosts file:
Linux command: sudo nano /etc/hosts
Modify the line that starts with 127.0.0.1 to use your FQDN and hostname, in that order:
127.0.1.1 your_hostname.your_domain.com your_hostname
127.0.0.1 localhost
...
Remember to replace your_hostname and your_domain.com with your own hostname and domain name. Save the file and exit the editor.
To check if the name has been changed correctly, reboot your server.
Linux command: sudo reboot
Step 3: Download and install Virtualmin
To install Virtualmin, download and run the official Virtualmin installation script, which will install Virtualmin, and Webmin, along with a LAMP stack, BIND, and Postfix.
Use wget to download the script:
Linux command: wget http://software.virtualmin.com/gpl/scripts/install.sh -O /tmp/virtualmin-install.sh
After the Virtualmin script has been downloaded successfully, we will go for the execution of the script. For that, first we will have to make the script file executable by running the following chmod command:
Linux command: chmod +x /tmp/virtualmin-install.sh
Once the file is made executable, we will go further towards running it using a shell. Enter the following command in the terminal to install Virtualmin through script.
Linux command: sh /tmp/virtualmin-install.sh
The script will give a warning message about existing data and compatible operating systems. Press y to confirm that you want to continue the installation.
The installation process may take a few minutes to complete all the steps as it installs various software packages and components.
Step 4: Configuring Webmin Using The Post-Installation Wizard
To configure Webmin, we'll use its web-based Post-Installation Wizard. Open your web browser and navigate to https://your_server_ip:10000. You can also use your fully-qualified domain name to access the site.
Note: Your browser may show a "Your connection is not secure" or "Your connection is not private" warning since Virtualmin uses a self-signed certificate. This warning is normal. You can ignore it.
Next, we'll need to enter the root username and password which is same as of the Linux system's to get access to the Web-based Control Panel of VirtualMin.
Once you have logged in, you'll see the Introduction screen stating that you are going through the steps to configure Virtualmin. Press Next to continue.
On the Memory use screen, select No for Preload Virtual Libraries, because you don't need to run the Virtual User interface all the time. Select Yes for Run email domain lookup server to enable faster mail processing. Press Next to continue.
On the Virus scanning screen, select No for Run ClamAV server scanner so you'll use less RAM. Press Next to continue.
On the Spam filtering screen, select No for Run SpamAssassin server filter and press Next to continue.
On the Database servers screen, select Yes to Run MySQL database server because MySQL server is widely used and supported by most applications, and no to Run PostgreSQL database server. Press Next to continue.
On the MySQL password screen, enter your desired MySQL root password. It should be different from the root password you used to log in to Webmin.
Select Yes if you’d like to remove the test MySQL database
Select Yes if you’d like to remove the anonymous MySQL user
On the MySQL database size screen, select the RAM option that matches the amount of RAM your server has. For a 1GB server, select Large system (1G) on which MySQL is heavily used. Press Next to continue.
On the Nameserver screen, Enter your primary and secondary nameservers which you configured in the prerequisites. If you haven't set these up, check the Skip check for resolvability box to avoid error message and proceed. Press Next to continue.
On the Password storage mode screen, select Store plain-text passwords if you must support password recovery. Otherwise, choose Only store hashed passwords. Here we have chosen plain-text passwords as an example. Press Next to continue.
you will see the All done screen. Click Next to end.
You may see a message stating that Virtualmin's configuration has not been checked. Click the Re-check and refresh the configuration button to check your Virtualmin configuration. Address any errors that the check reports. This process may take a few minutes to complete.
Congratulations! Your server is now configured.
Iam using vmware workstation12. I have a 2 vm and I installed Ubuntu in it.
The ip address changes automatically in the ubuntu.Last week the IPADDRESS in the first vm was 192.168.56.1 and in the second vm was 192.168.56.2.
But today I got changed to 192.168.56.3 and 192.168.56.4.
Because of this change I need to change lot of thing in my hadoop setup like ssh and name node configuration and lot of things.
Please help me to assign fixed ipaddress to vm.

So, basically, it tells you how to configure the DHCP service for VMWare to mapping IP address with MAC address of the guest VM, therefore the guest VM will always been assigned with the IP address you've specified.
It is like adding this section to the end of vmnetdhcp.conf file (On the host Windows machine. For other OS, such as VM Fuse on macOS or VMWare on Linux or ESXi, the file name/path could be varial, but the setting are expect to be similar):

In addition to this, which the article didn't introduce, there's other steps if it doesn't take effect (On Windows):
Make sure you've configured the right configuration file. On Windows, Config the configuration file:
%%ALLUSERDATA%%\Vmware\vmnetdhcp.conf
Stop the "VMware DHCP Service" and "VMware NAT Service".
Clean up the ".leases" file:C:\ProgramData\Vmware\vmnetdhcp.leases
Restart the "VMware DHCP Service" and "VMware NAT Service"
Start VMWare and run the VM. Or, if already running, issue a DHCP renew command (Linux: sudo dhclient -rv; sudo dhclient -v)
It should be working now.
I am running an Ubuntu 12.04-based box inside of Vagrant using VirtualBox. So far, everything is fine - except for one thing:
Let's assume that the VM is running. Then, the host goes to standby-mode. After waking it up again, the VM is still running, but its internal clock continues where it stopped when the host went down. So this basically means: Put the host to sleep for 15 minutes, wake it up again, then the VM's internal clock is 15 minutes late.
How can I fix this (setting the time manually is not an option for obvious reasons ;-))? Is there a way to run a script inside of a Vagrant VM whenever the host system changes its state?
I've read in the documentation that by default the VirtualBox Guest Additions sync the time with the host every 10 seconds. Apparently this is not happening, but I can not find any place where it is disabled. So any ideas?
PS: The Guest Additions are installed and match the version of VirtualBox being used.

What VirtualBox does every 10 seconds is just slight adjustement (something like 0.005 seconds). Only when the time difference reaches a threshold (20 minutes by default) a "real" resync is done.
You can reduce the thresold (i.e. to 10 seconds) with the following command:
VBoxManage guestproperty set <vm-name> "/VirtualBox/GuestAdd/VBoxService/--timesync-set-threshold" 10000
Summarizing answers of #zilupe and #Slobodan Kovacevic, solution is to add following to Vagrantfile:

This will synchronize clocks each time when desync becomes > 1s (1000ms)
I give an other solution to sync time between guest & host without installing Virtualbox guest addition:
install ntp on your guest, and de-comment these lines in /etc/ntp.conf:
disable auth
broadcastclient
Then, restart ntp with service ntp restart
Active broadcast on your host:
For Linux users, edit your /etc/ntp.conf file and configure broadcast (you must adapt IP):
broadcast 192.168.123.255
For Windows users, activate the "Windows Time" service. You can then read this page to configure it to broadcast time
Then, restart time service on host.
For me to get timesync working I had to do this:
vboxmanage setextradata «machine-name» "VBoxInternal/Devices/VMMDev/0/Config/GetHostTimeDisabled" 0
It turns the timesync on. It was, for some reason, off.
I found a solution:
install ntpdate
add "s" permission for ntpdate, this allows non-root users to run ntpdate as root: sudo chmod u+s /usr/sbin/ntpdate
add one line in ~/.bashrc: ntpdate -u ntp.ubuntu.com
After that, each time you login to the linux system, the time will be sync once.
you can install the VirtualBox Guest Additions in the VM to sync the time automatically by VB.
