Lets say I have a table:

I want to order the result by the most recent date at the top but group the "group" column together, but still have distinct entries. The result that I want would be:
1 | 01/06 | Group1 | 12345
3 | 01/04 | Group1 | 11111
2 | 01/05 | Group2 | 54321
What would be a query to get that result?

You should specify what RDBMS you are using. This answer is for Oracle, may not work in other systems.

this assumes that your date column does hold dates and not varchars

I want to get the latest phone number of customer by date. There are multiple entries for the same customer. But out of that I only want the record which has the maximum date.
Sample Data,

Please don't hard-code it with year. I need it to be dynamic so that every time only the latest date record will show. I know this can be achieved by Sub-query and CTE using ROW NUMBER. I tried but haven't got it right. Thanks a lot for the help.

Now i now i can use max to return the most recent date but how can i aggregate the person column to return sam?

"xcvd's" answer is perfect for this, I would just like to add another solution that can be used here for the sake of showing you a method that can be used in more complex situations than this. This solution uses a nested query (sub-query) to find the MAX(LastModified) regardless of any other field and it will use the result in the original query's WHERE clause to find any results that meet the new criteria. You didn't tell what's the name of your table so I'll assume below it is tbl:
SELECT m.ID, m.COL2, m.DATE

ORDER BY m.ID ASC
Explanation:
The query left joins the table tbl aliased as m (for "max") against itself (alias o, for "others") using the column ID; the condition m.DATE < o.DATE will combine all the rows from m with rows from o having a greater value in DATE. The row having the maximum value of DATE for a given value of ID from m has no pair in o (there is no value greater than the maximum value). Because of the LEFT JOIN this row will be combined with a row of NULLs. The WHERE clause selects only these rows that have NULL for o.DATE (i.e. they have the maximum value of m.DATE).

In order to do this you MUST exclude COL2 Your query should look like this
SELECT ID, MAX(DATE)
FROM table_name
GROUP BY ID
The above query produces the Maximum Date for each ID.
Having COL2 with that query does not makes sense, unless you want the maximum date for each ID and COL2
In that case you can run:
SELECT ID, COL2, MAX(DATE)
GROUP BY ID, COL2;
When you use aggregation functions(like max()), you must always group by all the other columns you have in the select statement.
I think you are facing this problem because you have some fundemental flaws with the design of the table. Usually ID should be a Primary Key (Which is Unique). In this table you have repeated IDs. I do not understand the business logic behind the table but it seems to have some flaws to me.
I have inherited a SQL Server table in the (abbreviated) form of (includes sample data set):

I need to select all SID's and the Invite_date, but if there is a duplicate SID, then just get the latest entry (by date).

N.B the Invite_date column has been declared as a nvarchar, so to get it in a date format I am using CONVERT(DATE, Invite_date)
You can use a ranking function like ROW_NUMBER or DENSE_RANK in a CTE:

With SQL-Server as rdbms you can use a ranking function like ROW_NUMBER:

This returns exactly one record for each GroupID even if there are multiple rows with the highest UniqueID (the name does not suggest so). If you want to return all rows in then use DENSE_RANK instead of ROW_NUMBER.

Since you have not mentioned any RDBMS, this statement below will work on almost all RDBMS. The purpose of the subquery is to get the greatest uniqueID for every GROUPID. To be able to get the other columns, the result of the subquery is joined on the original table.

The ROW_NUMBER() generates sequential number which you can filter out. In this case the sequential number is generated on groupid and sorted by uniqueid in descending order. The greatest uniqueid will have a value of 1 in rn.
