I have a remote project in Eclipse which was created through RSE's 'Create Remote Project' function. Now I changed hosting service and there's no option to connect to former host. When I try to delete this remote project Eclipse asks me for former host's login and password which if entered are not recognized anyway.
How can I delete the project?
Note: My workspace folder contains 'RemoteSystemsTempFiles' folder and there are no files related to this project there.
Finally found it. I did the following:
deleted relevant folder in workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.projects/
relaunched Eclipse
the project was still there but Eclipse let me 'legally' delete it with right-click
The answer is to brows to workspace.metadata.plugins\org.eclipse.rse.core\profiles\PRF.${hostname}
Then delete the directory with the name H.${profilename}
You might check into the "workspace/.metadata/.plugins" directory to find the RSE plugin's data storage area. It will probably have an xml file or something with the reference to your project. Back it up and delete the reference. Hopefully this will remove it from your view.
Sorry I cannot be more specific, this is just a suggestion that I am not able to try explicitly.

With my Kepler setup, I found this subdir in workspace that had a folder for each domain. I rm'd the outdated ones
<workspace path>/RemoteSystemsTempFiles/ABC.DOMAIN.COM
The solution that works for me - hide the project:
Go to "Project Explorer > Customize view", and uncheck "RSE internal projects".

When I open an existing Maven project, the IDE shows only those files on the root directory, but not any directories in the project. After a while, the IDE will show the project as what it is in the file structure, but not the directory types such as source code, test when I reopen the project. I reinstall the community edition, but the problem still resists. I have experienced the same issue for a few Java projects lately.
How to resolve this issue?
1, Please ask another teammate to check if that project really works. Sometimes the application structure already broken, then it is not your local problem.
2, There is a .idea folder in the application, delete it. Or simply, you git clone a new place Important: Please notice if you have edited / created some new files in the original directory, otherwise you would lost them if you delete the application.
3, Open intellij, and File -> Invalite caches
Personally, the second point is recommendated.
Try to click on Reload All Maven Projects in Maven tool window:
If it doesn't help you can try to perform the following actions:
Close the project with File | Close Project.
Close the IDE.
Open your project in OS file manager and remove all .iml files and the .idea directory.
Reimport the project.
If the problem remains contact JetBrains support and attach a compressed log folder along with the project structure tree.
I deleted the file Form1.vb on folder/explorer because I accidentally created it under MyProject in the solutions explorer. but when I tried to rebuild it I'm having below error already.

all data of files is stored in the solution itself, Go to Solution Explorer, Select the file
Either
1.) Right click the folder, Click Delete, Confirm Deletion Process if prompted.
2.) Left click the folder and hit the Delete key on your keyboard.
Do either of these will remove it from your solution and thus, the project. If you have folders being sync'd with git hub it will also update it this way, don't just straight up delete folders from the actual windows explorer though, this could cause pointer issues for reference.
I found the solution.
I created same file with same filename confirmed to replace this with the missing.
then added it again on "MyProject". Project -> Show All Files from the main menu.
I think what I needed was just the Project > show all files.

I've added a server in PhpStorm deployment settings but the Tools -> Deployment -> Upload to menu is still greyed out.
You need to specify a deployment path mapping in your server. Even if it's just the root path, you need to enter /. PhpStorm doesn't do it automatically.
Go to your server in deployment settings, click the 'Mappings' tab and enter slash (or your mapping) in the 'Deployment path on server' field. You don't need to enter a web path. Deployment menu should be ungreyed now.
In version 2019.2, if you dont set the path to / in mapping, it will grayed out.
Previous version, you could leave it blank
Also, if your local path (inside mappings configuration) is not your project root, you have to click on the deployable folder in the project tree to enable the menu.
Also, if the Deployment menu is completely missing at the bottom of the context menu, then set up a default server.
Click the server with the check mark to make a server the default option for a project.
Then you will get this additional menu when you right click on a file, folder, or the project.
I also encountered this issue in PyCharm Professional 2022.1.
Since the aforementioned solutions did not work for me, and it took me some time to resolve, I am providing the solution I found.
Clicking on Tools -> Deployment -> upload to servername was not working for me no matter what I tried.
However, I could right-click on the main project folder (on the left of the PyCharm window, where the project folder/file structure is visible). This right-click opens a menu, where there is an option for deployment -> upload to servername.
Once I clicked this, not only it worked, but the classical way (Tools -> Deployment -> upload to ) ceased to be grayed out also.
If deployment was available and suddenly no longer works, confirm that your credentials didn't get wiped from the deployment settings (Connection tab).
If any of these answers don't help, because you can't even see the server menu, you probably have the Remote Hosts Access plugin disabled.
Go to settings, go to the plugins, and enable Remote Hosts Access.
Please check if the following options are enabled in settings(Ctrl+Alt+S). It goes uncheck if Php Storm crashes. Check the below options and restart the editor.

Also, check Windows->Store current layout as the default just to make sure in the future you can restore the layout.
It's possible the opened file in the editor belongs to a External Library (bottom of project tree).
These External library files can't be deployed.
Every once in a while, I open an old project and I can't see any of the folders in the intelliJ project viewer. I can see all the files at the root.. but no folders. Yes I can delete the .iml file and .idea folder and re-create the project, but come on.. there's gotta be an easier way to fix this.

If you look in project settings (ctrl-shift-alt-s), you should see a module structure. If you instead see "Nothing to see", do the following:
In Project Structure -> Modules, press the + button,
press enter (since, for some weird reason, it won't let me click on "New Module")
In the window that pops up, click on the "..." next to Content root, find your root folder, and select it
Press ok
ignore any warning that says the name is already in use (or to that effect)
the simplest solution worked from me, just delete the .idea folder
keep in mind this will delete all of idea's current project configuration, it'll create the folder with default settings when reload the project again... but all other configuration will be lost if not properly backed-up
It might be because the project didn't have any modules defined. Try adding existing source code by hitting File > New > Module from Existing Sources and select the parent directory of the project for source code
Go to pom.xml file -> right click -> maven -> generate source and update folders. You will see your files and folder structures in left hand side.
All the project-specific settings for a project opened through Intellij IDE are stored in the .idea folder.
The .idea folder (hidden on OS X) in the solution root contains
IntelliJ’s project-specific settings files. These include per-project
details such as VCS mapping and run and debug configurations, as well
as per-user details, such as currently open files, navigation history
and currently selected configuration.
So, if you are not able to see the project file structure in your Intellij IDE, just delete the .idea folder,
rm -rf .idea
and reload the project, then after reload you'll be easily able to get your project structure displayed.

For me, the java folder was not showing up. I went into File->Project Structure. In the second column, I selected on _main. In the third column, I selected the tab "sources". In what I call the fourth column, where the "+Add Content Root" is shown, I verified, the java source/folder was present. In my case, there was an extra source folder, which was the current location. I removed this, applied and the java folder immediately showed up.
Right click on the Project name -> Open Module Setting -> Check the application context path set it up at your project location.
Check your idea.log -- it may have some details explaining why or what is happening (Help | Reveal log in Explorer). Possibly one of the config files got corrupted.
You can always backup and delete .idea subfolder (project settings) and re-create project from scratch. When it's wroking again (after basic configuration) you may copy some of the files from that folder back to recover some of your settings (if there were many).
This happened to me on a new computer when I opened up a Java project in the newly installed Intellij.
The problem was that I had not installed any JDK on the machine.
I had to install a JDK and then go into the settings at ctrl-shift-alt-s and add a JDK by specifying the folder where I installed it. It's possible that IntelliJ would have found it if I closed it and reopened it.
In my case the solution was to create a new project, specifying the project type and creating it within the same directory path as the project that does not load the project files correctly.
PhpStorm automatically detects that the directory exists and gives you the option to create project from existing sources.
This can be found under:
File --> New project...
For gradle users: "Reload All Gradle Projects" option should help.
After IntelliJ IDEA froze and was killed from the task manager, all the Run/Debug Configurations disappeared. I have tried invalidating caches, reloading files from disk, synchronizing and restarting, but nothing helped.
You can try to restore your Run configuration using the Local History feature of IntelliJ IDEA.
If you are using .idea directory based format, then your configurations will reside in workspace.xml file under .idea directory, invoke Local History dialog from the .idea directory right click menu in IDEA Project View, select the label some time before the crash and revert the old copy of workspace.xml.
In case .ipr file based format is used, your configurations will be stored in the <project>.iws file in the project root which you can restore in a similar way.
If the configurations were Shared, they are stored in .idea\runConfigurations directory as separate XML files or in the <project>.ipr file (if old project format is used).
If the Local history is blank and you are in Windows, try Restore previous versions right clicking the workspace.xml file or the <project>.iws one in Windows Explorer.
You can go to your main project and right click on it, select local history --> show history. Find some point in time where you think that system was stable (before crash) and click revert. This worked for me.
To me, this frequently happened on switching branches. Turning off "restore workspace on branch switching" helps to prevent the run configurations from getting lost.
Edit: Not sure if it actually has an impact, it still seems to happen to me sometimes, maybe less frequently though. I'll leave it here since the answer already has some upvotes, so maybe this was the solution for someone...
For every project in intellij there's a file created with all the configurations related to it.
Under the root directory of the project there's a hidden folder .idea in it is the workspace.xml with the configuration. workspace.xml is comprised of components one of which is responsible to hold the run/debug configurations.
If this file is getting corrupted it's difficult to restore these configurations if you don't have a backup of workspace.xml. to overcome it:
1. in intellij right click the workspace.xml file under project view and choose Local History -> Show History
2. if there's no history you can copy the component from a coworker with similar configurations.
3. backup in advance the workspace.xml and retrieve the RunManager component from it..
another good choice is to use the share option.
under each project's definition there's a checkbox share
Marking this checkbox will extract the definition for this project to an external location:
under the same .idea folder a new folder is being created runConfigurations and the configurations per project are being represented there in xml files.
The advantage of using share is that it can be copied and used for similar projects under other branched like QA and production
In my case, i've accidentally pressed Alt + Home and this bar disappeared, this combination toggles run bar at the top of IDEA window for me.

Run configurations are stored in your project files. When IntelliJ (or your computer with IntelliJ running) crashes hard, the project files can become corrupted and unreadable. I don't know of a way to recover this unless you have your project files are backed up somewhere.
Navigate to your project folder and check weather any .idea folder is created or not,
if created copy your project and paste it other location ant try opening it;
it will work.
I sometimes have the problem that all the run/debug configurations are not created from CMake after being lost. I solved this by just deleting the whone list of configurations from the workspace.xml (from .idea folder).
This happened to me recently and I just restarted IntelliJ and they shared ones (in .run) are now restored.
In my case what happened was I did something that made IntelliJ recognize the project as a new application type, so it thought my old configuration was not valid for my project anymore and wasn't displaying it to me. I reverted my changes and the configuration appeared as an option again.
I guess this feature can't be removed from IntelliJ but I guess this can help:

Very annoying problem in Intellij Idea for many years.
It's quite often breaks because of broken (connection to?) Ant debugger, used to create run configs.
I was periodically searching for a solution, but no success. Then today after disappeared Run Config to display in panel I did inspect contents of workspace.xml. All the run configs were there.
And then it turns out to be 7+ years bug clue...
Always spring out non-called Ant...
Happily, contents of workspace.xml in place with all your run config items, you can just
disable infamous plugin Ant debugger,
reload the project,
and all your run configs are displayed and available again))).
