How to determine next tabstop in VBA UserForm? - vba

I have a UserForm with some textbox entry fields on it that are enabled/disabled by a checkbox. When a checkbox is clicked to check it, I'd like to move the focus into the now-enabled textbox.
The textbox is the next control after the checkbox in the tab order, so it seems like using the tab order to find the appropriate textbox would be a good idea.
But... how can I find the next control in the tab order after a given control? Is there a method to do that, or do I have to enumerate all the controls and figure it out for myself?

I appreciate that this comes under the heading of "enumerating all the controls" but it's pretty simple and I attach the code for completeness:
Private Sub CheckBox1_Click()
Dim ctl As Control
For Each ctl In Me.Controls
If ctl.TabIndex = Me.ActiveControl.TabIndex + 1 Then
ctl.SetFocus
Exit For
End If
Next
End Sub

As a different way of looking at this.
Can you not rather use the textbox you want focussed, and set that name in the checkbox.tag
then in you vba code use
DoCmd.GoToControl CheckBox.Tag
Where the CheckBox.Tag is the Textbox.Name?
EDIT:
OK, I found this
SendKeys "{Enter}", True
at VBA code for moving to next control? It must be eeeasy

I had trouble with
SendKeys "{Enter}", True
With a little experimentation I found this works
SendKeys "{TAB}", True
One caveat...if you're in the VBE stepping through the code, and watching it on the form, SendKeys is executed is executed in the code. Confused the heck out of me at first why my code started to look odd, e.g. extra spacing and extra lines!

With all due respect to the kind advice offered thus far, this issue shouldn't be addressed through programming when there's a way to address it within the userform itself.
Click on the userform itself, then right click and select "tab order". You can then move each element within the userform to whatever position you want without having to resort to complicated and unstable programming tricks.

Conditional visibility on MS Access Form - how to write in VBA or Macro

I have some very (very) basic MS Access knowledge. I'm trying to expand a bit into either VBA or macros as I'd like to put in some conditional visibility for my form. Basically, I have a checkbox. If it's checked, I want three or four more fields to pop up. Someone was able to point me to a basic VBA formula of if (this checkbox) = true then, (fieldx).visible = true, else, (fieldx).visibility = false, end if.
But I'm so new to this that I need more help and explanation. I tried putting it in but couldn't get it to work (no error message, just nothing changed at all).
Specific questions:
-Does this formula seem right?
-If I want multiple fields to be visible, can I combine them into one formula or should I create a new "if" statement for all?
-Where do I enter this code? I'm running the Office 365 version. For all I know, I'm not even putting it in the right place.
-How do I determine the field names to replace the (this checkbox) and (fieldx) in the formula? I tried entering the name I title the fields as, but with the spaces in the name I got an error message, and without the spaces nothing happened. Is there a specific naming convention to turn the field names into formula-appropriate titles? Is the name listed somewhere?
-Once I get the formula entered, is there something I have to do to get it to run/take effect? I tried saving, closing and reopening with no changes.
-Is this the best way to go about this?
If there's anything else you think I should know, I would love to hear it - but please keep in mind I'm very new to this so if you could keep it at "dummy" or ELI5 levels of explanation, I'd appreciate it!
after creating a form with 4 textboxes and a checkbox put the form in design mode (lower right corner has design mode selected, select a textbox and hit property sheet on the ribbon (or f4).
On the property sheet note the visible property. set the visible property to false. Now the textbox will be invisible when the form starts.
Tip you can select all the textboxes at the same time and set their properties all at once.
Every control on the form and even the various parts of the form have properties you can set and play with. For instance you can give any name you want to any control. On the property sheet go to the other tab and set the name property.
Tip: choose a name you you will remember without having to look it up and describes the controls function.
Next select the checkbox (not the checkbox's label). On the property sheet go to the event tab and select the on click event. hit the ellipsis and choose code builder. Access is Event Driven. We want the textboxes to appear when the checkbox is selected so we put that code in the checkbox click event.
after choosing code builder we get the code window where we can browse among all the events for all our forms. for now all you should see is something like:
Private Sub mycheckbox_Click()
End Sub
So insert some code to handle the checkboxes like:
Private Sub mycheckbox_Click()
If mycheckbox = True Then
txtbox1.Visible = True
txtbox2.Visible = True
txtbox3.Visible = True
txtbox4.Visible = True
Else
txtbox1.Visible = False
txtbox2.Visible = False
txtbox3.Visible = False
txtbox4.Visible = False
End If
End Sub
now when the checkbox is not checked no textboxes are visible.
but when the checkbox is checked they appear

Ellipsis Textbox for VBA Userform File Select

I am trying to create a path selection user interface for an extensive VBA program I've been working on, but I can't seem to get the ellipsis textbox that I'd like. This is a very common feature, especially in option tables. This is an example of what I'd like to get, straight from the VBA Options panel:
I would LOVE to find a way to get the same functionality in a Userform. The only solution that I've found thus far is to use a combo box with the ellipsis arrow option enabled. However, there doesn't seem to be an apparent way to use the activation of the combo box arrow to run a dialog box, nor does there seem to be a way to make it look UNLIKE a combo box. Last resort I use a button below the text box, but I'd really prefer a less-bulky way of doing this.
Any solution would be greatly appreciated.

Your suggestion does work, and it is surely less complex and more elegant than having two controls work together, Button + Textbox.
A Combo can achieve perfectly the desired feature, in the following way.
1) In design mode, set the button style to Ellipsis
DropButtonStyle = fmDropButtonStyleEllipsis
And eventually, make the ellipsis show up only when the combo is entered, by setting the design-time property:
ShowDropButtonWhen = ShowDropButtonWhenFocus
2) If needed, you can set other design-time properties to have some look and feel. The defaults look pretty good however.
3) Add the following handler to the parent userform. The snippet simulates the launching of a dialog and getting a new value or cancelling. It does not show any dropdown window. (but you still have control over that: if you want to show it according to some condition, you still can call the method ComboBox1.DropDown)
Private Sub ComboBox1_DropButtonClick()
' The following two lines avoid to call the routine twice, at entry and at exit
Static i As Integer
i = (i + 1) Mod 2: If i = 0 Then Exit Sub
With ComboBox1
s = InputBox("enter some text", , .Value) '<~~ simulates any dialog
If s <> "" Then .Value = s
SendKeys ("{Enter}") '<~~ to close immediately the dropdown window
End With
End Sub
Try it ;)
Not only do ComboBoxes have Drop Buttons, so do TextBoxes (as do Excel's RefEdit controls). Even though you can't access the Textbox's Drop Button at design time, you can do so at runtime. Using a textbox avoids having to deal with the dropped down list of a combobox.
Given a textbox named TextBox1, the following code will provide the desired ellipsis drop button:
Private Sub UserForm_Initialize()
With Me.TextBox1
.DropButtonStyle = fmDropButtonStyleEllipsis
.ShowDropButtonWhen = fmShowDropButtonWhenAlways
End With
End Sub
Then use the DropButtonClick event of the textbox to perform whatever action you want:
Private Sub TextBox1_DropButtonClick()
'' Code here to do what you need
End Sub
I have an extensive example at Alternative to Excel’s Flaky RefEdit Control that uses a textbox with a "Reduce" drop button to replicate the functionality of Excel's unreliable RefEdit controls.

Access VBA Spell Check One Field of a Subform

I am trying to make a memo field be spell checked when it leaves the field, and when it leaves the subform to the main form. I want to have this done automatically without having a click button, as I need the data to be as accurate and error-free as possible.
In the main form I have used this code to spell check a title field once you move off the field.
Private Sub DetailedTitle_Exit(Cancel As Integer)
'This code works to spellcheck the title after leaving.
With Me!DetailedTitle
If Len(.Value) > 0 Then
DoCmd.SetWarnings False
.SelStart = 1
.SelLength = Len(.Value)
DoCmd.RunCommand acCmdSpelling
.SelLength = 0
DoCmd.SetWarnings True
End If
End With
End Sub
This works well, as users will 99% of the time moving from this field to another field in the main form. This does not work when I use in on the subform even when I use the on exit field event AND the on exit subform event. It seems to work, but if you click around it will actually give an error. I wasn't smart enough to note the error, and I have since removed the code.
I would also not be opposed if I could get it to loop thought the subform, as it is a continuous form, but only that one field.
Any advice or tips would be welcome. I just recently learned of the Do.Cmd.RunCommand acCmdSpelling, but there seems to be a lack of content in regards to subforms. Thanks.
I did some research: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/run-the-spell-check-through-code.1636292/
One user mentions that the control you want to check has to be in focus.
Sub subformMemo_OnExit()
Me.subformMemo.setfocus
DoCmd.RunCommand acCmdSpelling
End Sub
On the other hand this code creates the problem that you cannot leave the control because you will always setfocus on it again.
Does this help?

Microsoft Word VBA tab key to make textbox visible

Longtime viewer, first time question asker.
I'm currently working with UserForms within MS Word and have a particular form that can have up to 20 different labels and accompanying textboxes with varying texts. I have all but the first hidden while not in use, however I would like the next label and text box to become visible following input in the previous textbox. So if you enter data (anything) in the first textbox, the next label and text box will become visible. Does this make sense? I've seen other responses here suggest using AfterUpdate() rather than Change() or Click() but can't figure out how to use any of them. I would share my code but at this point I don't have any code to share, other than my labels and textboxes are lblField1 txtField1, lblField2 txtField2...
Any suggestions?
I would suggest using Change event, when using AfterUpdate you need to leave you TextBox for a while to fire the event. If you have only one TextBox visible there is nothing to move to. If you have more TextBoxes you would need to move back to fire AfterEvent and I don't think this is what you expect.
So, double click wherever on your userform and add the following code in code area:
Private Sub txtField1_Change()
txtField2.Visible = True
lblField2.Visible = True
End Sub
Next, add next portion for next textbox:
Private Sub txtField2_Change()
txtField3.Visible = True
lblField3.Visible = True
End Sub
And so on, if only you have an order in controls name you just need to change numbers in the end of control names.

How to wrap comment.text in vba

I have a situation in which text in one of the cells is massive.When I change the contents of this cell the previous value becomes a comment to that cell.Now the problem is, this text is so big that I cannot see complete text.If I use .Shape.Textframe.Autosize=true then I have to go on browsing till god knows when to see the text.
What I need to do is whatever and however big the text might be in Commnet.text,I want to show it in one and one place only.i.e when I hover on comment.
Place a TextBox where you will on your worksheet adjusted to the size you want, this still reads the comment although this is not on a hover, but perhaps will help
Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Range)
If Not ActiveCell.Comment Is Nothing Then
ActiveSheet.Shapes("Text Box 1").TextFrame.Characters.Text = ActiveCell.Comment.Text
Else: ActiveSheet.Shapes("Text Box 1").TextFrame.Characters.Text = ""
End If
End Sub
Actually after considering this further you really are trying to get comment to act as you want. So I recommend Resize all comments in the selected area and on the same link further down the page Show Excel Comments in Centre of Active Window.
These get you closer to what i think you want.
How about a pop-up text box? I.e., the user clicks on the cell and a pop-up form with the text appears. The best part is you can make the pop-up as big as you want.
Personally, I would make the pop-up resizable, but with only the Close button at top. I can't think of a way to trigger this form with just a mouse rollover, but I'm only using 2003. Later versions allow you more tricks.
xlSheet.Range(xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,1), xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,8)).Merge
xlSheet.Range(xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,1), xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,8)).HorizontalAlignment = 1
xlSheet.Range(xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,1), xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,8)).WrapText = True
xlSheet.Range(xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,1), xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,8)).RowHeight=45
