STUFF only unique values along with sorting another column - sql

I want to combine values with comma-separated. For that used stuff.
But my data has duplicate values, and I just need unique items from that.
Here is a query that I'm using.
SELECT STUFF
(
RTRIM
(
( SELECT N', ' + CAST(column1Name AS varchar(MAX))
FROM dbo.tableName
ORDER BY column2Name
FOR XML PATH (N'')
)
)
, 1, 2, N'')
I tried SELECT DISTINCT within STFF, but that requires a column that used for sorting within SELECT clause, I am using STUFF so I can't use that column in SELECT clause.
SELECT STUFF
(
RTRIM
(
( SELECT DISTINCT N', ' + CAST(column1Name AS varchar(MAX))
FROM dbo.tableName
ORDER BY column2Name
FOR XML PATH (N'')
)
)
, 1, 2, N'')
I also tried to use sub-query to do sorting and use distinct outside, but that also gave a compile error.
SELECT STUFF
(
RTRIM
(
( SELECT DISTINCT N', ' + CAST(column1Name AS varchar(MAX))
FROM
(
SELECT column1Name
FROM dbo.tableName
ORDER BY column2Name
) tableAlias
FOR XML PATH (N'')
)
)
, 1, 2, N'')
I also tried GROUP BY, which also forces me to add column2Name in the SELECT clause.
SELECT STUFF
(
RTRIM
(
( SELECT N', ' + CAST(column1Name AS varchar(MAX))
FROM dbo.tableName
GROUP BY column1Name
ORDER BY column2Name
FOR XML PATH (N'')
)
)
, 1, 2, N'')
Is there any way to stuff unique values along with sorting based on a different column?

You can still use the GROUP BY method. The only thing is when you GROUP BY column1Name, there might be multiple value of column2Name, so you need to use aggregate on it, example MIN(column2Name)
SELECT STUFF
(
RTRIM
(
( SELECT N', ' + CAST(column1Name AS varchar(MAX))
FROM dbo.tableName
GROUP BY column1Name
ORDER BY MIN(column2Name)
FOR XML PATH (N'')
)
)
, 1, 2, N'')

Need distinct comma delimited product values order by date

I have below table structure
create TABLE PRODUCTDeatils
(
Product varchar(50),
Date Datetime
)
I want an output where i get comma separated list with distinct values but order by date.
I first split the values by below query
SELECT DISTINCT
LTRIM(RTRIM(value)) AS Product, date
INTO #tmp3
FROM PRODUCTDeatils
CROSS APPLY STRING_SPLIT(LTRIM(RTRIM(Product)), ',')
SELECT *
FROM #tmp3
ORDER BY date
Then I used below two queries to achieve it but not successful.
Query #1:
DECLARE #cols AS NVARCHAR(MAX);
SELECT #COLS = substring(list, 1, LEN(list) - 1)
FROM
(SELECT
list = (SELECT DISTINCT Product + ';'
FROM #tmp3
ORDER BY Product + ';'
FOR XML PATH(''), TYPE).value('.', 'nvarchar(MAX)')) AS T
SELECT #COLS
Query #2:
SELECT
STUFF((SELECT '; ' + Product
FROM
(SELECT DISTINCT TOP 100
Product,date
FROM #tmp3) x
ORDER BY date
FOR XML PATH('')), 1, 2, '') Text
I want output like above but bat should only come once.
In the more recent versions of SQL Server, you should just use string_agg():
SELECT STRING_AGG(Product, ',') WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY date)
FROM (SELECT LTRIM(RTRIM(s.value)) AS Product, MIN(date) as date
FROM ProductDetails pd CROSS APPLY
STRING_SPLIT(LTRIM(RTRIM(pd.Product)), ',') s
GROUP BY LTRIM(RTRIM(s.value))
) p
Here is a db<>fiddle.
You can add row_number and select only one value per product.
SELECT DISTINCT
LTRIM(RTRIM(value)) AS Product, date, ROW_NUMBER() over (partition by trim(Value) order by date) rn
INTO #tmp3
FROM PRODUCTDeatils
CROSS APPLY STRING_SPLIT(LTRIM(RTRIM(Product)), ',')
SELECT
STUFF((SELECT '; ' + Product
FROM
(SELECT DISTINCT TOP 100
Product,date
FROM #tmp3 where rn = 1) x
ORDER BY date
FOR XML PATH('')), 1, 2, '') Text

How to split multiple strings and insert SQL Server FN_SplitStr

I have 2 strings and one integer:
#categoryID int = 163,
#Ids nvarchar(2000) = '1,2,3',
#Names nvarchar(2000) = 'Bob,Joe,Alex'
I need to select 3 columns 3 rows; The most accomplished is 3 rows 2 columns:
select #categoryID,items from FN_SplitStr(#Ids,',')
resulting:
163,1
163,2
163,3
But I can't figure out how to split both strings.
I tried many ways like:
select #categoryID,items from FN_SplitStr((#Ids,#Names),',')
select #categoryID,items from FN_SplitStr(#Ids,','),items from FN_SplitStr(#Names,',')
EXPECTED OUTPUT:
163,1,Bob
163,2,Joe
163,3,Alex
NOTE1: I looked over tens of questions the most similar is:
How to split string and insert values into table in SQL Server AND SQL Server : split multiple strings into one row each but this question is different.
NOTE2: FN_SplitStr is a function for spliting strings in SQL. And I'm trying to create a stored procedure.
Based on your expected output, you have to use cross apply twice and then create some sort of ranking to make sure that you are getting the right value. As IDs and Names don't seem to have any relationship cross apply will create multiple rows (when you split the string to Names and ID)
There might be better way but this also gives your expected output. You can change this string split to your local function.
1st Dense rank is to make sure that we get three unique names and 2nd dense rank is the rank within the name based on order by with ID and outside of the sub query you have to do some comparison to get only 3 rows.
Declare #categoryID int = 163,
#Ids nvarchar(2000) = '1,2,3',
#Names nvarchar(2000) = 'Bob,Joe,Alex'
select ConcatenatedValue, CategoryID, IDs, Names from (
select concat(#categoryID,',',a.value,',',b.value) ConcatenatedValue, #categoryID CategoryID,
A.value as IDs, b.value as Names , DENSE_RANK() over (order by b.value) as Rn,
DENSE_RANK() over (partition by b.value order by a.value) as Ranked
from string_split(#IDs,',') a
cross apply string_split(#names,',') B ) t
where Rn - Ranked = 0
Output:
Inside your stored procedure do a string split of #Ids and insert into #temp1 table with an identity(1,1) column rowed. You will get:
163,1,1
163,2,2
163,3,3
Then do the second string split of #Names and insert into #temp2 table with an identity(1,1) column rowed. You will get:
Bob,1
Joe,2
Alex,3
You can then do an inner join with #temp1 and #temp2 on #temp1.rowid = #temp2.rowid and get:
163,1,Bob
163,2,Joe
163,3,Alex
I hope this solves your problem.
You can do this with a recursive CTE:
with cte as (
select #categoryId as categoryId,
convert(varchar(max), left(#ids, charindex(',', #ids + ',') - 1)) as id,
convert(varchar(max), left(#names, charindex(',', #names + ',') - 1)) as name,
convert(varchar(max), stuff(#ids, 1, charindex(',', #ids + ','), '')) as rest_ids,
convert(varchar(max), stuff(#names, 1, charindex(',', #names + ','), '')) as rest_names
union all
select categoryId,
convert(varchar(max), left(rest_ids, charindex(',', rest_ids + ',') - 1)) as id,
convert(varchar(max), left(rest_names, charindex(',', rest_names + ',') - 1)) as name,
convert(varchar(max), stuff(rest_ids, 1, charindex(',', rest_ids + ','), '')) as rest_ids,
convert(varchar(max), stuff(rest_names, 1, charindex(',', rest_names + ','), '')) as rest_names
from cte
where rest_ids <> ''
)
select categoryid, id, name
from cte;
Here is a db<>fiddle.
You need to split CSV value with record number. For that you need to use ROW_NUMBER() function to generate record wise unique ID as column like "RID", while you split CSV columns in row.
You can use table value split function or XML as used below.
Please check this let us know your solution is found or not.
DECLARE
#categoryID int = 163,
#Ids nvarchar(2000) = '1,2,3',
#Names nvarchar(2000) = 'Bob,Joe,Alex'
SELECT
#categoryID AS categoryID,
q.Id,
w.Names
FROM
(
SELECT
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY f.value('.','VARCHAR(10)')) AS RID,
f.value('.','VARCHAR(10)') AS Id
FROM
(
SELECT
CAST('<a>' + REPLACE(#Ids,',','</a><a>') + '</a>' AS XML) AS idXML
) x
CROSS APPLY x.idXML.nodes('a') AS e(f)
) q
INNER JOIN
(
SELECT
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY h.value('.','VARCHAR(10)')) AS RID,
h.value('.','VARCHAR(10)') AS Names
FROM
(
SELECT
CAST('<a>' + REPLACE(#Names,',','</a><a>') + '</a>' AS XML) AS namesXML
) y
CROSS APPLY y.namesXML.nodes('a') AS g(h)
) w ON w.RID = q.RID

SQL Server convert xml to csv using CTE - nulls currently being ignored

I am using CTE to convert xml to csv so that it can be exported to a file, however if I have an empty xml tag, this currently gets ignored.
Here is my initial solution courtesy of this previous very helpful post:
https://stackoverflow.com/a/23785202/6260721
Here is my sql:
CREATE TABLE EXPORT_TEST
(
DATA varchar(max)
)
INSERT INTO EXPORT_TEST (DATA)
VALUES ('<EXPORT_DATA><ID>ABC123</ID><PRICE_A>5.6</PRICE_A><PRICE_B></PRICE_B><PRICE_C>8.1</PRICE_C></EXPORT_DATA>')
DECLARE #commaSeparatedValues NVARCHAR(MAX)
DECLARE #xml XML = (SELECT TOP 1 CONVERT(xml,DATA) FROM EXPORT_TEST)
;WITH cte AS (
SELECT
rownr = ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY #commaSeparatedValues),
Tbl.col.query('.') AS [xml]
FROM #xml.nodes('EXPORT_DATA') Tbl(col)
), cols AS (
SELECT
rownr,
Tbl.Col.value('.', 'nvarchar(max)') AS Value
FROM cte
CROSS APPLY cte.xml.nodes('//text()') Tbl(Col)
)
INSERT INTO EXPORT_TEST(DATA)
SELECT DISTINCT
STUFF((
SELECT ',' + IIF(ISNUMERIC(value) = 1, Value, '''' + Value + '''')
FROM cols SSF WHERE SSF.rownr = S.rownr
FOR XML PATH(''),TYPE
).value('.','VARCHAR(MAX)'
), 1, 1, '') as DATA
FROM cols S
SELECT * FROM EXPORT_TEST
At the moment, it is returning:
'ABC123',5.6,8.1
But I don't want it to ignore PRICE_B, I want it to return an empty string:
'ABC123',5.6,,8.1 <--extra comma required where PRICE_B should be
How can I achieve this?
Besides the possibility to shredd the full XML and re-concatenate its values (there is an answer already), you might use FLWOR-XQuery:
DECLARE #xml XML=
'<EXPORT_DATA>
<ID>ABC123</ID>
<PRICE_A>5.6</PRICE_A>
<PRICE_B />
<PRICE_C>8.1</PRICE_C>
</EXPORT_DATA>';
EDIT better to read with a variable $txt instead of ($n/text())[1]
SELECT
STUFF
(
#xml.query('
let $r:=/EXPORT_DATA
for $n in $r/*
let $txt:=($n/text())[1]
return if(empty($txt) or not(empty(number($txt)))) then
concat(",",string($txt))
else concat(",''",string($txt),"''")
').value('.','nvarchar(max)'),1,1,'');
The result
'ABC123' ,5.6 , ,8.1
This code works on a mass of records using XQUERY.
I'm assuming char(10) (Line Feed) does not appear in your data.
I'm assuming the maximum length of the concatenated text is 1000 (I don't want to use varchar(max) for no good reason)
You can change both of these assumptions if you wish
declare #separator char(1) = char(10)
select substring
(
replace
(
cast
(
cast(DATA as xml).query
(
'for $i in //*
where not($i/*)
return concat
(
sql:variable("#separator")
,if(local-name($i) = "ID") then ('''''''') else ('''')
,($i/text())[1]
,if(local-name($i) = "ID") then ('''''''') else ('''')
)'
) as nvarchar(1000)
) ,' ' + #separator ,','
) ,2 ,1000
) as csv
from EXPORT_TEST
INSERT INTO EXPORT_TEST (DATA) VALUES
('<EXPORT_DATA><ID>ABC123</ID><PRICE_A>5.6</PRICE_A><PRICE_B></PRICE_B><PRICE_C>8.1</PRICE_C></EXPORT_DATA>')
,('<EXPORT_DATA><ID>DEF456</ID><PRICE_A>6.7</PRICE_A><PRICE_B>66.77</PRICE_B><PRICE_C>7.2</PRICE_C></EXPORT_DATA>')
,('<EXPORT_DATA><ID>GHI789</ID><PRICE_A></PRICE_A><PRICE_B>88.99</PRICE_B><PRICE_C></PRICE_C></EXPORT_DATA>')
csv
'ABC123',5.6,,8.1
'DEF456',6.7,66.77,7.2
'GHI789',,88.99,
What about this:
;WITH cte AS (
SELECT
rownr = ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY #commaSeparatedValues),
Tbl.col.query('.') AS [xml]
FROM #xml.nodes('EXPORT_DATA') Tbl(col)
), cols AS (
SELECT
rownr,
Tbl.Col.value('.', 'nvarchar(max)') AS Value
FROM cte
CROSS APPLY cte.xml.nodes('EXPORT_DATA/child::node()') Tbl(Col)
)
INSERT INTO EXPORT_TEST(DATA)
SELECT DISTINCT
STUFF((
SELECT ',' + IIF(ISNUMERIC(value) = 1 OR LEN(value) = 0, Value, '''' + Value + '''')
FROM cols SSF WHERE SSF.rownr = S.rownr
FOR XML PATH(''),TYPE
).value('.','VARCHAR(MAX)'
), 1, 1, '') as DATA
FROM cols S
Using cte.xml.nodes('EXPORT_DATA/child::node()') in the second CTE will give as all nodes:
;WITH cte AS (
SELECT
rownr = ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY #commaSeparatedValues),
Tbl.col.query('.') AS [xml]
FROM #xml.nodes('EXPORT_DATA') Tbl(col)
)
SELECT
rownr
,Tbl.Col.query('.')
,Tbl.Col.value('.', 'nvarchar(max)') AS Value
FROM cte
CROSS APPLY cte.xml.nodes('EXPORT_DATA/child::node()') Tbl(Col)
Then, in the concatenation we need to add check for empty string:
IIF(ISNUMERIC(value) = 1 OR LEN(value) = 0, Value, '''' + Value + '''')

how to write SQL query for this result?

I have so many long database so I used seq_no in commas separate using more than one sequence store in single column but now I want all sequence in a single column so I am confused how to create this sql result for this.
For example:
TABLE STRUCTURE
SR_NO IS INT ,
SEQ_NO IS VARCHAR(MAX)
SR_NO SEQ_NO
---------------------------------
1 1839073,
2 1850097,1850098,
3 1850099,1850100,1850110
I need to get this result:
SEQ_NO
--------------
1839073
1850097
1850098
1850099
1850100
1850110
Thanks!
declare #t table(Id int,seq varchar(100))
insert into #t (Id,seq) values (1,'1839073,'),(2,'1839073,1850098,'),(3,'1850099,1850100,1850110 ')
;With Cte as (
SELECT A.Id,
Split.a.value('.', 'VARCHAR(100)') AS Seq
FROM
(
SELECT Id,
CAST ('<M>' + REPLACE(seq, ',', '</M><M>') + '</M>' AS XML) AS Data
FROM #t
) AS A CROSS APPLY Data.nodes ('/M') AS Split(a) )
Select ID,Seq from Cte Where Seq > ''
Try splitting it with XML
SELECT SR_NO, t.c.value('.', 'VARCHAR(2000)') COL1
FROM (
SELECT SR_NO, x = CAST('<t>' +
REPLACE(SEQ_NO, ',', '</t><t>') + '</t>' AS XML)
FROM
(values(1,'1839073'),(2, '1850097,1850098'),
(3, '1850099,1850100,1850110')) y(SR_NO, SEQ_NO)
) a
CROSS APPLY x.nodes('/t') t(c)
Result:
SR_NO COL1
1 1839073
2 1850097
2 1850098
3 1850099
3 1850100
3 1850110
You can replace this with your table:
(values (1,'1839073'),(2, '1850097,1850098'),
(3, '1850099,1850100,1850110')) y(SR_NO, SEQ_NO)
This should do it: (Replace YourTableName with your table name)
;WITH CTE(NEW_SEQ_NO, SEQ_NO) as (
SELECT LEFT(SEQ_NO, CHARINDEX(',',SEQ_NO + ',') -1),
STUFF(SEQ_NO, 1, CHARINDEX(',',SEQ_NO + ','), '')
FROM YourTableName
WHERE SEQ_NO <> '' AND SEQ_NO IS NOT NULL
UNION all
SELECT LEFT(SEQ_NO, CHARINDEX(',',SEQ_NO + ',') -1),
STUFF(SEQ_NO, 1, CHARINDEX(',',SEQ_NO + ','), '')
FROM CTE
WHERE SEQ_NO <> '' AND SEQ_NO IS NOT NULL
)
SELECT NEW_SEQ_NO from CTE ORDER BY NEW_SEQ_NO

Turning a Comma Separated string into individual rows
I have written the following query after referring Turning a Comma Separated string into individual rows
It will work for you
create table STRUCTURE(SR_NO int, SEQ_NO varchar(max))
insert STRUCTURE select 1, '1839073,'
insert STRUCTURE select 2, '1850097,1850098,'
insert STRUCTURE select 3, '1850099,1850100,1850110'
;with tmp(SR_NO, DataItem, SEQ_NO) as (
select SR_NO, LEFT(SEQ_NO, CHARINDEX(',',SEQ_NO+',')-1),
STUFF(SEQ_NO, 1, CHARINDEX(',',SEQ_NO+','), '')
from STRUCTURE
union all
select SR_NO, LEFT(SEQ_NO, CHARINDEX(',',SEQ_NO+',')-1),
STUFF(SEQ_NO, 1, CHARINDEX(',',SEQ_NO+','), '')
from tmp
where SEQ_NO > ''
)
Select DataItem as SEQ_NO from tmp order by SEQ_NO;

Convert a row as column and merge two column as its value

I have stuck in a select statement, converting rows into columns. I have tried with PIVOT, i was able to convert the single column. But my requirement is little different. I have explained the requirement below.
I have a table structure as below,
I want to select the data as below,
The values in the table are dynamic, which is not a problem for me to deal with that. But i need a way to get the below result.
Could someone please give me a hint on doing it, may be a way to modify the PIVOT below.
select *
from
(
select TSID,AID,Count,BID
from tbl TS
WHERE TS.TPID = 1
) src
pivot
(
sum(Count)
for AID in (AID1,AID2,AID3)
) piv
Thank you..

EDIT
This will work for not previously known column names
DECLARE #Columns AS VARCHAR(MAX)
DECLARE #SQL AS VARCHAR(MAX)
SELECT #Columns = STUFF(( SELECT DISTINCT ',' + AID
FROM Table1
FOR
XML PATH('')
), 1, 1, '')

FROM Table1 O
GROUP BY TSID,
AID
)
SELECT *
FROM MyCTE
PIVOT
(
MAX(CountList)
FOR AID IN
(
' + #Columns + '
)
) AS PivotTable'
EXEC(#SQL)
