Keywords such as GENERATED are not available on Azure SQL Studio - azure-sql-database

After discovering the usefulness of Temporal Tables, I have tried to implement it using Azure SQL Data Studio.
However, I get syntax errors when using Keywords such as GENERATED or SYSTEM_VERSIONING.
Is there a fix for this ?

What version of ADS are you using? It looks fine with the latest stable version (1.17.1) for me

If you're still seeing this on the latest version please open an issue here https://github.com/microsoft/azuredatastudio/issues and we'll investigate.

SQL - Attempted to read or write protected memory

I'm trying to use a functions on the SQL SSMS2014 and I get the error on the title.
I can create new tables and databases no problem if i do it with a new query, but afterwards i can't edit or use the design function without getting that error on any of the databases that i have.
Most of the similar errors i found were related to connection to the database, but none of the fixes on those worked for me.
My guess is that the error message you are getting is:
the backend version is not supported to design database diagrams or tables
Solution:
This is commonly reported as an error due to using the wrong version of SMSS. Use the version designed for your database version. You can use the command select ##version to check which version of sql server you are actually using. This version is reported in a way that is easier to interpret than than shown in the Help About in SMSS.
Using a newer version of SMSS than your database is generally error free, i.e. backward compatible.

Unable to deploy database to Azure

I created ms sql database in SSMS 2012. Connected successfully to Azure and trying to deploy db to the cloud.
Encountering following errors:
Please see screen shot
Numerous Usupported property errors — not supported when used as part of a data package
You're likely using a feature not supported in Azure SQL Database. Please refer to this non supported features list to help you pinpoint the problem:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/ff394115.aspx
This happened with me too. In my case ,i changed the schema of a table after creating once for the first time. After deleting that table database deployed correctly. Usually this error occurs when validating schema fails.

alter table drop column fail in SSDT because of dependancy of non cluster index

I have created an SSDT project for SQL Server 2012 database. since i have database already present in the SQL Server Database engine so i use the import feature to import all the objects into SSDT. everything works fine but i am now facing 2 problems
1) since one of the table is using the HIERARCHYID column (col1) as a datatype and there is one computed column based on the HIERARCHYID column. The definition of computed column is something like case Col1= hierarchy.GETRoot() THE NULL ELSE someexpression END. after importing the table script in SSDT, Error of unresolve reference start coming up.
If i change the defination to something like case hierarchy.GETRoot() = Col1 THE NULL ELSE someexpression END (note now col1 is now at the end) it works fine.
2) if i keep the above solution (i.e keeping col1 after =) then at the time of publishing the project,SSDT has to drop the column at the production server and then recreate it. since there is a index depend on this column the deployment get failed everytime saying the error like ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN fail because other object access it. i have no control how SSDT design / publish the script. and if i have to keep any eye to drop every dependent object before publishing the database project then i think there is no use of it
Please suggest how i can resolve this
Thanks

I was able to reproduce the reference resolution problem you described. I would suggest submitting that issue to Microsoft via Connect here: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/CreateFeedback.aspx
I was not able to reproduce the publish failure. Which version of SSDT does the Visual Studio Help > About dialog show is installed? The most recent version ends with 40403.0. If you're not using the most recent version, I would suggest installing it to see if that fixes the publish failure. You can use Tools > Extensions and Updates to download SSDT updates.
If you do have the most recent version, could you provide an example schema that demonstrates the problem?
Compare your project to a production dacpac and have it generate scripts to make the changes. Then if need be, you can edit the scripts before they get applied to production. This is how my dev teams do it.
I was running into the same issue for a number of days now. After finding your post to confirm the issue was in SSDT, I realized that it may be fixed in a later version than the one we are currently using: 12.0.50730.0 (VS 2013, the version this project uses).
I also have version 14.0.3917.1 installed from VS 2017. I just attempted with that, no issues. So the solution is to upgrade your SSDT version.
Please ignore that solution, it appears my success last night was anomalous. While attempting to repeat it today after restoring a database with the issue, the deployment failed to account for at least one index again.
EDIT:
I have posted about this on User Voice: https://feedback.azure.com/forums/908035-sql-server/suggestions/33850309-computed-column-indexes-are-ignored-with-dacpac-de
Also, to maintain that this is at least a workable answer of sorts, the workaround I am implementing involves dropping and recreating the missed indexes myself using pre and post deployment scripts.
Not an ideal solution if the dacpac was meant to update various versions of the database that could have different levels of drift from the model, however it works for us as we have a tight control over all instances and can expect about the same delta generated each release for each db instance.

Project using two different versions of SQL Server

I am a junior developer and about to get my feet wet in my first "real" project. However we are trying to figure out a way to set everything up as the current developer lives out of country.
I was told to install certain programs, subversion clients and SQL Server 2000.
It does not seem that SQL Server 2000 can be installed on Windows 7. Are there inherent issues with me developing in a higher version of SQL Server like 2005? Is there an issue with stored procedures that can not be properly translated from on SQL Server version to another?
Again, I'm fairly new at this; please let me know if this is just a bad idea, impossible and any other guidance you can provide.
There are many features in newer versions of MSSQL that were not there in 2000 (multi-row inserts, newer hashing algorithms, and VARCHAR(MAX) to name a few). If you're using SQL Server Management Studio, it will not check these differences for you, even if you are connected to a SQL server 2000 database - it automatically uses 2008 rules for its syntax highlighting. Because of this it's easy to accidentally write code that's not 2000-compatible.
As far as getting 2000 running, if you have the install disk for an older version of windows, you could run a VM (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/) and install the database server there. If your company has a separate development environment, you could create a copy of the production database to work off of as well.
The newer versions of SQL server bring new language and database features, if you write something using a feature that is available in SQL 2005 and not 2000 i.e. PIVOT then when you try and promote this to live then it will just get a syntax error.
There is no translation, if you went back in time 11 years, you'd still speak English you'd just get an odd look if you talked about 'Tweeting'.
You can set the database compatibility level to an earlier version for the specific database you are working on. This will stop you using the more modern features.
For the most part, you won't run into issues is you're simply running standard stored procedures and SQL statements.
However, there are several things that might not work properly if you're not in sync. SQL2005 was a relatively major upgrade and instroduced quite a bit of new functionality.
I don't know what you've got for available resources - dollars, etc, but if you have an MSDN Subscription at a level that provides you access to operating systems, then I would strongly recommend setting up a virual machine with an older version of Windows using your MSDN licenses, just to keep things on an even playing field.

Sql 2008 Developer to Sql Azure Migration

Hi My company is deciding for switching its existing application to azure platform (only Sql Part). So we need to upload our db from local to cloud. For migration i came across various tools like
1. cerebrata 's tools
2. SqlAzure Migration wizard
3. Microsoft Sql Data Sync
4. Conventional Script way via management studio.
But all the above tools showed that they have limited capacity. A user cannot work flawlessly on either of the tool.
In cerebrata's tool - the main drawback was its field for Application User Name and Application Key , which my admin havent shared. Also there is manual mapping of fields between azure and local.
Sql Azure Migration wizard - generates scripts and executed too but with lots of error . I was using its version 2.1. Also it very slow. It seems that its a replica of Sql Srvr Mgmt Studio.
Sql Data Sync :- I found it cool as its a MS product but it has limitation too that it only connects with Windows Authentication based local sql server, or you need to explicitly allow the required but. Even after allowing while syncing , I got some Sql Azure Provisioning Error.
4 Sql Srvr Mgmt Studio :- This is most easiest way but requires a lot of manual work to do before actual migration. What i did is that I generated a script of entire db (almost 101123 lines of code for single db) and tried to execute on azure. On the very first time i faced some keyword mismatch error . Finally i removed all line after primary key declaration that With (Padding = Off ....)or something similar and also On Primary then i executed , but still got error on Set Identity Insert On. After doing a lot of hard work in removing unwanted lines waited more than 2 hrs to completed the script remotely, i got no Errors , errors and errors.
So you guys are requested to please suggest me any good alternative stated than above or i am lacking something and can do more with above.
Thanks
Amit Ranjan
I've faced a similar problem recently, running through the options you've listed.
You might give a try to Red-Gate beta for Azure (free for a few months). I found their tools to be quite good for SQL schema and data replication.
Never tried the Azure build myself, though (I migrated tables manually by the time I was told about the offer).
