I'm trying to manipulate views inside a dialog, but the only way I can retrieve the views is in the Java old fashioned way, like this:
class MyDialog: DialogFragment() {
override fun onCreateDialog(savedInstanceState: Bundle?): Dialog {
val alert = AlertDialog.Builder(context!!)
val inflater = LayoutInflater.from(activity)
val view = inflater?.inflate(R.layout.pg_dialog, null)
with(alert) {
setView(view)
setNeutralButton(R.string.scambio_back, DialogInterface.OnClickListener({ _: DialogInterface, _: Int -> dialog.dismiss() }))
}
view?.findViewById<TextView>(R.id.dialog_name)?.text = person.name
view?.findViewById<TextView>(R.id.dialog_surname)?.text = person.surname
return alert.create()
}
}
Do you know any way to retrieve inner views in Kotlin, avoiding findViewById?
[Edit] Here's the build.gradle file:
apply plugin: 'com.android.application'
apply plugin: 'kotlin-android'
apply plugin: 'kotlin-android-extensions'
android {
compileSdkVersion 27
defaultConfig {
applicationId "com.project.persons"
minSdkVersion 21
targetSdkVersion 27

versionName "1.0"

}

apply plugin: 'com.google.gms.google-services'
In this case, when you're not in a Fragment or an Activity, but have a View reference that you want to search for children with a given ID, you can use Kotlin Android Extensions with this syntax:
view.dialog_name.text = person.name
view.dialog_surname.text = person.surname
As with always when using Extensions, make sure you have the correct imports.
Since your question is a little bit unclear I'd say you refer to do something like this :
Do import apply plugin: 'kotlin-android-extensions in your build.gradle
Then you have to import this in your Activity
import kotlinx.android.synthetic.main.activity_pg_dialog.*
If you for example have a TextView with an id test you could do this:
test.setText("test text!!")

EDIT
I found the solution
In this case, you need to install whatever Kotlin version is. In my case like this
my kotlin version is : 1.5.21
and I added this dependency in gradle.plugin(module)
plugins {
id 'org.jetbrains.kotlin.plugin.serialization' version '1.5.21'
}
and I added this
dependencies {
implementation 'org.jetbrains.kotlinx:kotlinx-serialization-json:1.4.1'
}
and that's it, now you can use serialization in your data class like this.
for example
import kotlinx.serialization.Serializable
#Serializable
data class example(
val example: String,
)
i am trying to reference a kotlin class in a fragment class in java and it results to error saying that it cannot find the symbol of the kotlin class.
fragment class
public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState) {
View rootview = inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_flashcards, container, false);
go = (ImageButton) rootview.findViewById(R.id.goBtn);
//Instructions audio
instruct = (ImageButton) rootview.findViewById(R.id.soundBtn);
MediaPlayer.create(getActivity(), R.raw.instructions);
//Click go button to explore flashcards
go.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
startActivity(new Intent(getActivity(), Flashcards1.class));
}
});
return rootview;
}
}
this is where the error is
startActivity(new Intent(getActivity(), Flashcards1.class));
build.gradle app

I think your problem is that you don't have Kotlin set up for your app module. You have the plugin dependency added to your main build.gradle, but you're not applying the plugin in the app module build.gradle. You also don't have the kotlin-stdlib dependency added to that module. Have a look at the example setup here (you have to scroll down a bit to the code snippets).
I don't know a lot about Gradle and the ways to configure your build files, so it's possible you've got it set up a different way and it's fine - but you should be able to see Kotlin class files from Java without doing anything special:
Kotlin code can be easily called from Java. For example, instances of a Kotlin class can be seamlessly created and operated in Java methods.
So it seems like maybe it's just not set up, and that's why it's not working for you. If Kotlin's working in the IDE (like popping up in code completion) but not when you try to build it, that sounds like the IDE plugin is set up fine, but not the stuff in your project. I don't know for sure, but hopefully it'll help!
I am trying to follow a tutorial in order to implement and use a room database YouTube-link.
My problem is that my gradle files look so different compared to what is shown in the video that I have no idea where to put the id "navigation.safeargs.kotlin" and the
classpath "androidx.navigation-safe-args-gradle-plugin:2.3.0-rc01"
or anything else that I might need. I have tried a bunch of places but it never works and I couldn't really find an answer, so if anyone knows, pls help me out.

Go straight to the source IMO
Top-level build.gradle:
buildscript {
repositories {
google()
}
dependencies {
val nav_version = "2.4.2"
classpath("androidx.navigation:navigation-safe-args-gradle-plugin:$nav_version")
}
}
App/module build.gradle:
plugins {
id("androidx.navigation.safeargs")
// or for Kotlin-only projects
id("androidx.navigation.safeargs.kotlin")
}
So in your top-level file, you need google() in your repositories block, and the classpath in your dependencies block. If you don't have one of those blocks, just create it - they go inside the buildscript block, see? The nav_version val is just a variable so you can make all your Navigation components use the same version by referring to that, and the actual version number is only set in one place. You can just write the number in the dependency statement if you like - make sure all the Navigation components are using the same version though!
Stick the id("androidx.navigation.safeargs") line in your module's build file's plugins block. The order sometimes matters for some of these, so try it at the bottom. The syntax is a little different from how they look in your current file, but it's just another way of writing it - either's fine, you can mix and match
Use this one:
id 'androidx.navigation.safeargs.kotlin' version '2.4.0' apply false
In your build.gradle (project level) try adding:
plugins {
id 'com.android.application' version '7.1.3' apply false
id 'com.android.library' version '7.1.3' apply false
id 'org.jetbrains.kotlin.android' version '1.6.21' apply false
id 'androidx.navigation.safeargs.kotlin' version '2.5.1' apply false
}
and in the build.gradle (module level) add:
plugins {
id 'com.android.application'
id 'org.jetbrains.kotlin.android'
id 'kotlin-kapt'
id 'androidx.navigation.safeargs.kotlin'
}
