TSQL Repeat values on outer join - sql

I've been working on this for some time now and I would like to get some help.
My database is SQL Server 2008 R2 ( I know, very old).
I basically have a transaction table that captures values per week, by job.
I would like to repeat the last value of a job until it finds the next value.
I have included some data from my table. The last column (values needed) is what I'm trying to achieve.
Thank you very much.

I've tried the SQL below, but it is not giving the correct values. Please see the attachment.
SQL
select t.*, t2.percentcomp as value_needed
from #1 t
outer apply
(select top 1 t2.*
from #1 t2
where t2.job_skey = t.job_skey and
t2.COST_CODE_SKEY=t2.COST_CODE_SKEY and
t2.period_end_date <= t.period_end_date and
t2.percentcomp is not null
order by t.JOB_SKEY,t.phase,t.period_end_date desc
) t2
Attachment..view of SQL. Value_needed should begin with 5

You can do what you want using OUTER APPLY:
select t.*, t2.percent_comp as value_needed
from t outer apply
(select top 1 t2.*
from t t2
where t2.job_skey = t.job_skey and
t2.period_end_date_id <= t.period_end_date_id and
t2.percentcomp is not null
order by t2.period_start_date desc
) t2;

Distance between geography points return each TOP 1

I have two sql server 2016 tables:
Customers which has about 200k rows
Shops which has 100 rows
Both tables contain a geography field.
For each customer I need to find their closest shop.
I have created the code below which gives the correct results but returns the distance between every shop and customer and I only need TOP 1 for each customer. I could create a ROW_NUMBER and then =1 but I'm worried about the amount of data this will create in the cte and how long it will take to run.
select t1.[CustNo_],t1.Latitude, t1.Longitude,t1.GeoLoc
,t2.[ShopCode]
,t1.GeoLoc.STDistance(t2.GeoLoc)/1000 as DistanceApartKM
from #Customers t1
join #Shops t2
on (t1.GeoLoc.STDistance(t2.GeoLoc) <= 10000)
order by t1.[CustNo_], DistanceApartKM
I am now going to try suggestion to use Cross Apply, amended code below.
select t1.[CustNo_],t1.Latitude, t1.Longitude,t1.GeoLoc
,x.[ShopCode]
,x.DistanceApartKM
from #Customers t1
cross apply (select top 1 t2.[ShopCode]
,t1.GeoLoc.STDistance(t2.GeoLoc)/1000 as DistanceApartKM
from #Shops t2
where (t1.GeoLoc.STDistance(t2.GeoLoc) <= 10000)
order by DistanceApartKM
) x
order by t1.[CustNo_]

Percentage difference between numbers in two columns

My SQL experience is fairly minimal so please go easy on me here. I have a table tblForEx and I'm trying to create a query that looks at one particular column LastSalesRateChangeDate and also ForExRate.
Basically what I want to do is for the query to check that LastSalesRateChangeDate and then pull the ForExRate that is on the same line (obviously in the ForExRate column), then I need to check to see if there is a +/- 5% change since the last time the LastSalesRateChangeDate changed. I hope this makes sense, I tried to explain it as clearly as possible.
I believe I would need to create a 'subquery' to look at the LastSalesRateChangeDate and pull the ForEx rate from that date, but I just don't know how to go about this.
I should add this is being done in Access (SQL)
Sample data, here is what the table looks like:
| BaseCur | ForCur | ForExRate | LastSalesRateChangeDate
| USD | BRL | 1.718 | 12/9/2008
| USD | BRL | 1.65 | 11/8/2008
So I would need a query to look at the LastSalesRateChangeDate column, check to see if the date has changed, if so take the ForExRate value and then give a percentage difference of that ForExRate value since the last record.
So the final result would likely look like
"BaseCur" "ForCur" "Percentage Change since Last Sales Rate Change"
USD BRL X%
Gordon's answer pointed in the right direction:
SELECT t2.*, (SELECT top 1 t.ForExRate
FROM tblForEx t
where t.BaseCur=t2.BaseCur AND t.ForCur=t2.ForCur and t.LastSalesRateChangeDate<t2.LastSalesRateChangeDate
order by t.LastSalesRateChangeDate DESC, t.ForExRate DESC
) AS PreviousRate, [ForExRate]/[PreviousRate]-1 AS ChangeRatio
FROM tblForEx AS t2;
Access gives errors where the TOP 1 in the subquery causes "ties". We broke the ties and therefore removed the error by adding an extra item to the ORDER BY clause. To get the ratio to display as a percentage, switch to the design view and change the properties of that column accordingly.
If I understand correctly, you want the previous value. In MS Access, you can use a correlated subquery:
select t.*,
(select top (1) t2.LastSalesRateChangeDate
from tblForEx as t2
where t2.BaseCur = t.BaseCur and t2.ForCur = t.ForCur
t2.LastSalesRateChangeDate < t.LastSalesRateChangeDate
order by t2.LastSalesRateChangeDate desc
) as prev_LastSalesRateChangeDate
from t;
Now, with this as a subquery, you can get the previous exchange rate using a join:
select t.*, ( (t.ForExRate / tprev.ForExRate) - 1) as change_ratio
from (select t.*,
(select top (1) t2.LastSalesRateChangeDate
from tblForEx as t2
where t2.BaseCur = t.BaseCur and t2.ForCur = t.ForCur
t2.LastSalesRateChangeDate < t.LastSalesRateChangeDate
order by t2.LastSalesRateChangeDate desc
) as prev_LastSalesRateChangeDate
from t
) as t inner join
tblForEx as tprev
on tprev.BaseCur = t.BaseCur and tprev.ForCur = t.ForCur
tprev.LastSalesRateChangeDate = t.prev_LastSalesRateChangeDate;
As per my understanding, you can use LEAD function to get last changed date Rate in a new column by using below query:
WITH CTE AS (
SELECT *, LEAD(ForExRate, 1) OVER(PARTITION BY BaseCur, ForCur ORDER BY LastChangeDate DESC) LastValue
FROM #TT
)
SELECT BaseCur, ForCur, ForExRate, LastChangeDate , CAST( ((ForExRate - ISNULL(LastValue, 0))/LastValue)*100 AS float)
FROM CTE
Problem here is:
for every last row in group by you will have new calculalted column which we have made using LEAD function.
If there is only a single row for a particular BaseCur and ForCur, then also you will have NULL in column.
Resolution:
If you are sure that there will be at least two rows for each BaseCur and ForCur, then you can use WHERE clause to remove NULL values in final result.
WITH CTE AS (
SELECT *, LEAD(ForExRate, 1) OVER(PARTITION BY BaseCur, ForCur ORDER BY LastChangeDate DESC) LastValue
FROM #TT
)
SELECT BaseCur, ForCur, ForExRate, LastChangeDate , CAST( ((ForExRate - ISNULL(LastValue, 0))/LastValue)*100 AS float) Percentage
FROM CTE
WHERE LastValue IS NOT NULL
SELECT basetbl.BaseCur, basetbl.ForCur, basetbl.NewDate, basetbl.OldDate, num2.ForExRate/num1.ForExRate*100 AS PercentChange FROM
(((SELECT t.BaseCur, t.ForCur, MAX(t.LastSalesRateChangeDate) AS NewDate, summary.Last_Date AS OldDate
FROM (tblForEx AS t
LEFT JOIN (SELECT TOP 2 BaseCur, ForCur, MAX(LastSalesRateChangeDate) AS Last_Date FROM tblForEx AS t1
WHERE LastSalesRateChangeDate <>
(SELECT MAX(LastSalesRateChangeDate) FROM tblForEx t2 WHERE t2.BaseCur = t1.BaseCur AND t2.ForCur = t1.ForCur)
GROUP BY BaseCur, ForCur) AS summary
ON summary.ForCur = t.ForCur AND summary.BaseCur = t.BaseCur)
GROUP BY t.BaseCur, t.ForCur, summary.Last_Date) basetbl
LEFT JOIN tblForEx num1 ON num1.BaseCur=basetbl.BaseCur AND num1.ForCur = basetbl.ForCur AND num1.LastSalesRateChangeDate = basetbl.OldDate))
LEFT JOIN tblForEx num2 ON num2.BaseCur=basetbl.BaseCur AND num2.ForCur = basetbl.ForCur AND num2.LastSalesRateChangeDate = basetbl.NewDate;
This uses a series of subqueries. First, you are selecting the most recent date for the BaseCur and ForCur. Then, you are joining onto that the previous date. I do that by using another subquery to select the top two dates, and exclude the one that is equal to the previously established most recent date. This is the "summary" subquery.
Then, you get the BaseCur, ForCur, NewDate, and OldDate in the "basetbl" subquery. After that, it is two simple joins of the original table back onto those dates to get the rate that was applicable then.
Finally, you are selecting your BaseCur, ForCur, and whatever formula you want to use to calculate the rate change. I used a simple ratio in that one, but it is easy to change. You can remove the dates in the first line if you want, they are there solely as a reference point.
It doesn't look pretty, but complicated Access SQL queries never do.

Order by data as per supplied Id in sql

Query:
SELECT *
FROM [MemberBackup].[dbo].[OriginalBackup]
where ration_card_id in
(
1247881,174772,
808454,2326154
)
Right now the data is ordered by the auto id or whatever clause I'm passing in order by.
But I want the data to come in sequential format as per id's I have passed
Expected Output:
All Data for 1247881
All Data for 174772
All Data for 808454
All Data for 2326154
Note:
Number of Id's to be passed will 300 000
One option would be to create a CTE containing the ration_card_id values and the orders which you are imposing, and the join to this table:
WITH cte AS (
SELECT 1247881 AS ration_card_id, 1 AS position
UNION ALL
SELECT 174772, 2
UNION ALL
SELECT 808454, 3
UNION ALL
SELECT 2326154, 4
)
SELECT t1.*
FROM [MemberBackup].[dbo].[OriginalBackup] t1
INNER JOIN cte t2
ON t1.ration_card_id = t2.ration_card_id
ORDER BY t2.position DESC
Edit:
If you have many IDs, then neither the answer above nor the answer given using a CASE expression will suffice. In this case, your best bet would be to load the list of IDs into a table, containing an auto increment ID column. Then, each number would be labelled with a position as its record is being loaded into your database. After this, you can join as I have done above.
If the desired order does not reflect a sequential ordering of some preexisting data, you will have to specify the ordering yourself. One way to do this is with a case statement:
SELECT *
FROM [MemberBackup].[dbo].[OriginalBackup]
where ration_card_id in
(
1247881,174772,
808454,2326154
)
ORDER BY CASE ration_card_id
WHEN 1247881 THEN 0
WHEN 174772 THEN 1
WHEN 808454 THEN 2
WHEN 2326154 THEN 3
END
Stating the obvious but note that this ordering most likely is not represented by any indexes, and will therefore not be indexed.
Insert your ration_card_id's in #temp table with one identity column.
Re-write your sql query as:
SELECT a.*
FROM [MemberBackup].[dbo].[OriginalBackup] a
JOIN #temps b
on a.ration_card_id = b.ration_card_id
order by b.id

Find records in SQL Server 2008 R2

Please find below image for make understanding my issues. I have a table as shown below picture. I need to get only highlighted (yellow) records. What is the best method to find these records?
In SQL Server 2012+, you can use the lead() and lag() functions. However, this is not available in SQL Server 2008. Here is a method using outer apply:
select t.*
from t outer apply
(select top 1 tprev.*
from t tprev
on tprev.time < t.time
order by tprev.time desc
) tprev outer apply
(select top 1 tnext.*
from t tnext
on tnext.time > t.time
order by tnext.time asc
)
where (t.cardtype = 1 and tnext.cardtype = 2) or
(t.cardtype = 2 and tprev.cardtype = 1);
With your sample data, it would also be possible to use self joins on the id column. This seems unsafe, though, because there could be gaps in that columns values.
Havent tried this, but I think it should work. First, make a view of the table in your question, with the rownumber included as one column:
CREATE VIEW v AS
SELECT
ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY id) AS rownum,
id,
time,
card,
card_type
FROM table
Then, you can get all the rows of type 1 followed by a row of type 2 like this:
SELECT
a.id,
-- And so on...
FROM v AS a
JOIN v AS b ON b.rownum = a.rownum + 1
WHERE a.card_type = 1 AND b.card_type = 2
And all the rows of type 2 preceded by a row of type 1 like this:
SELECT
b.id,
-- And so on...
FROM v AS b
JOIN v AS a ON b.rownum = a.rownum + 1
WHERE a.card_type = 1 AND b.card_type = 2
To get them both in the same set of results, you can just use UNION ALL. Technically, you don't need the view. You could use nested selects instead, but since you will need to query the table four times it might be nice to have it as a view.
Also, if the ID is continous (it goes 1, 2, 3 without any gaps), you don't need the rownum and can just use the ID instead.
here is a code you can run in sql server
select * from Table_name where id in (1,2,6,7,195,160,164,165)

Ordering a SQL query based on the value in a column determining the value of another column in the next row

My table looks like this:
Value Previous Next
37 NULL 42
42 37 3
3 42 79
79 3 NULL
Except, that the table is all out of order. (There are no duplicates, so that is not an issue.) I was wondering if there was any way to make a query that would order the output, basically saying "Next row 'value' = this row 'next'" as it's shown above ?
I have no control over the database and how this data is stored. I am just trying to retrieve it and organize it. SQL Server I believe 2008.
I realize that this wouldn't be difficult to reorganize afterwards, but I was just curious if I could write a query that just did that out of the box so I wouldn't have to worry about it.
This should do what you need:
WITH CTE AS (
SELECT YourTable.*, 0 Depth
FROM YourTable
WHERE Previous IS NULL
UNION ALL
SELECT YourTable.*, Depth + 1
FROM YourTable JOIN CTE
ON YourTable.Value = CTE.Next
)
SELECT * FROM CTE
ORDER BY Depth;
[SQL Fiddle] (Referential integrity and indexes omitted for brevity.)
We use a recursive common table expression (CTE) to travel from the head of the list (WHERE Previous IS NULL) to the trailing nodes (ON YourTable.Value = CTE.Next) and at the same time memorize the depth of the recursion that was needed to reach the current node (in Depth).
In the end, we simply sort by the depth of recursion that was needed to reach each of the nodes (ORDER BY Depth).
Use a recursive query, with the one i list here you can have multiple paths along your linked list:
with cte (Value, Previous, Next, Level)
as
(
select Value, Previous, Next, 0 as Level
from data
where Previous is null
union all
select d.Value, d.Previous, d.Next, Level + 1
from data d
inner join cte c on d.Previous = c.Value
)
select * from cte
fiddle here
If you are using Oracle, try Starts with- connect by
select ... start with initial-condition connect by
nocycle recursive-condition;
EDIT: For SQL-Server, use WITH syntax as below:
WITH rec(value, previous, next) AS
(SELECT value, previous, next
FROM table1
WHERE previous is null
UNION ALL
SELECT nextRec.value, nextRec.previous, nextRec.next
FROM table1 as nextRec, rec
WHERE rec.next = nextRec.value)
SELECT value, previous, next FROM rec;
One way to do this is with a join:
select t.*
from t left outer join
t tnext
on t.next = tnext.val
order by tnext.value
However, won't this do?
select t.*
from t
order by t.next
Something like this should work:
With Parent As (
Select
Value,
Previous,
Next
From
table
Where
Previous Is Null
Union All
Select
t.Value,
t.Previous,
t.Next
From
table t
Inner Join
Parent
On Parent.Next = t.Value
)
Select
*
From
Parent
