My Bigcommerce site has Categories that have Parent/Child setups (for exmaple):
Food>
Jam>
Coffee>
Clothes>
Shirts>
Dress>
T-Shirts>
When I pull the Categories from the API, it gives me the Category name, and each Categories Parent Category in an excel sheet:
ID Parent Name
101 0 Food
102 101 Jam
103 101 Coffee
I am trying to create the taxonomy so I get
Food
Food>Jam
Food>Coffee
Clothes
Clothes>Shirts
Clothes>Shirts>Dress
I have been struggling to find a way using loops in VBA to get this end result, without success.
Not looking for you to write my code, but any guidance on the best way to approach this?
this is some code to get you in the right direction
input
output
my code which is looping through the special cells and concat them and add the results to new sheet
Sub ashTax()
Dim wsCopyFrom As Worksheet
Dim wsCopyTo As Worksheet
Dim rng As Range
Dim cell As Range
Dim str As String
Set wsCopyFrom = ThisWorkbook.ActiveSheet
ThisWorkbook.Worksheets.Add after:=wsCopyFrom
Set wsCopyTo = ThisWorkbook.ActiveSheet
Set rng = wsCopyFrom.UsedRange.SpecialCells(xlCellTypeConstants)
wsCopyTo.[a1].Value = "Results"
For Each cell In rng
str = str + cell.Value
Cells((Cells(Rows.Count, "a").End(xlUp).Row) + 1, "a").Value = str
Next
End Sub
Your structure is similar to a paragraph numbering structure or a WBS (work breakdown structure)
In a paragraph numbering structure the ID for the sub or sub-subparagraph is the right-most number:
1.1.2.3 Whatever
the 3 is the ID for the paragraph. In your case, it appears that the item ID is the left-most number.
I would go through the data in two passes:
in the first pass build up a translate table associating the Name of an item with its Number
in the second pass, replace the numbers with the associated name and format properly the right-to-left nature of each record
Once you have firmed-up your approach and written some code, we can help you further.

I populated an excel sheet with the locations of blank cells in my sheet using suggestions from this post. So I have a Column A filled with locations in the following format
$X$1 or $X2:$X$4.
What I am trying to do is use those row numbers from the column explain above to populate a separate column. I want to use the row numbers as a reference in what to populate for the column. So a Column B looking something like
=$B$1 or =$B$2:$B$4 (took 1 and 2-4 and used it as row number for reference call)
Both columns are referencing a different sheet so please excuse any column naming.
I'm not sure if this is going to require VBA or if I can get away with just using a formula, I expect VBA due to desired specifics. I've looked at post like this and this. But neither of these fully encompass what I'm looking for. Especially since I want it to express all the contents in a $B$2:$B$4 case.
My intuition on how to solve this problem tells me, parse the string from Column A for the 1st number then check if it's the end of the string. If it is, feed it to the reference that populates Column B, if not then find the 2nd number and go through a loop that populates the cell (would prefer to keep all the content in one cell in this case) with each value for each reverence.
i.e.
=$B2
=$B3
=$B4
My question is how do I go about this? How do I parse the string? How do I generate the loop that will go through the necessary steps? Such as using the number as a reference to pull information from a different column and feed it neatly into yet another column.
If (for example) you have an address of $X2:$X$4 then
Dim rng As Range
Set rng = yourSheetReference.Range("$X2:$X$4")
If you want to map that to the same rows but column B then
Set rng = rng.Entirerow.Columns(2)
will do that. note: it's not so clear from your question whether you're mapping X>>B or B>>X.
Once you have the range you want you can loop over it:
For Each c in rng.Cells
'do something with cell "c"
next c
Something like this should work for you:
Sub Tester()
Dim shtSrc As Worksheet, c As Range, rng As Range, c2, v, sep
Set shtSrc = ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Sheet1") '<< source data sheet
Set c = ActiveSheet.Range("A2") '<<range addresses start here
'process addresses until ColA is empty
Do While c.Value <> ""
'translate range to (eg) Column X
Set rng = shtSrc.Range(c.Value).EntireRow.Columns(24)
sep = ""
v = ""
'build the value from the range
For Each c2 In rng.Cells
v = v & sep & c2.Value
sep = vbLf
Next c2
c.Offset(0, 1) = v '<< populate in colB
Loop
End Sub
Try this code:
Sub Test()
Dim fRng As Range ' the cell that has the formula
Set fRng = Worksheets("sheet1").Range("A1")
Dim tWS As Worksheet 'the worksheet that has the values you want to get
Set tWS = Worksheets("sheet2")
Dim r As Range
For Each r In Range(fRng.Formula).Rows
'Debug.Print r.Row ' this is the rows numbers
Debug.Print tWS.Cells(r.Row, "N").Value 'N is the column name
Next
End Sub
I've been working on a user-defined function in VBA to find a certain count. For background, "raw" is a worksheet that refers a sheet that has genres in column B and an artist ID in column C. The sheet that I'm working in has combinations of two genres: first in column A, second in column B.
Anyway, the function that I'm trying to build should do the following:
Take two inputs as strings. Check the genre column in "raw" for matches with the first input. Then, take that ID and find a cell that matches the ID and the second input. If there is one found, add one to a running count. Whether or not it is found, move onto the next match. The function will return an integer that indicates the number of times the two genres had the same artist ID.
Now, my function is returning #VALUE.. no syntax errors, no compiling errors. Just the error in returning the value. I've looked it over, googled like crazy, and I just can't figure it out. I'm new to VBA, so maybe I'm just missing something really obvious or I've defined something wrong. Either way, I just need another set of eyes to look over it. Any suggestions for improvement are much appreciated, so thank in advance for your time and help!!
Here is the code. I know it isn't the prettiest, but it's short and the logic should make sense.
Public Function cocount(c1 As String, c2 As String) As Integer
Dim rng As Range
Dim rng2 As Range
Dim cell As Range
Dim cell1 As Range
Dim ID As Integer
Dim Count As Integer
rng = Worksheets("Raw").Range("B2:B183579")
rng2 = Worksheets("Raw").Range("C2:C183579")
Count = 0
For Each cell In rng
If cell.Value = c1 Then
ID = cell.Offset(0, 1).Value
For Each cell1 In rng2
If cell1.Value = ID And cell1.Offset(0, -1).Value = c2 Then
Count = Count + 1
End If
Next cell1
End If
Next cell
cocount = Count
End Function
EDIT: Thanks for viewing my question and being willing to help (And thanks Rdster for attempting a solution). I uploaded pictures of the raw data and the combination, although it won't let me embed the images. Raw Data Combination List
Anyway, I'll try and explain my problem again. In the combination list of genres, each row contains two genres. I want to find how many times those two genres share the same artist ID in the Raw Data sheet. There are 181,000+ combinations, and 183,000+ rows in the Raw Data. Thus, the function needs to be efficient--something that I'm not incredibly great at doing even in other languages.
This can be achieved using built-in several different Excel Worksheet functions.
Excel Formula using COUNTIFS
Define 2 dynamic named ranges that will resize themselves to fit the data. Gendre_2 is defined relative to Gendre_1 this ensures that the ranges are the same size.
Gendre_1 = OFFSET(Raw!$A$1,1,0,COUNTA(Raw!$A:$A)-1,1)
Gendre_2 = OFFSET(Raw!$A$1,1,1,COUNTA(Raw!$A:$A)-1,1)
Formula
=COUNTIFS(Gendre_1,A2,Gendre_2,B2)
Reference: ExcelJet - Excel COUNTIFS Function
COUNTIFS counts the number of cells in a range that match supplied criteria. Unlike the COUNTIF function, COUNTIFS can apply more than one set of criteria, with more than one range. Ranges and criteria are applied in pairs, and only the first pair is required. For each additional criteria, you must supply another range/criteria pairs. Up to 127 range/criteria pairs are allowed.
VBA
Public Function cocount(c1 As String, c2 As String) As Double
Dim rng As Range, rng2 As Range
With Worksheets("Raw")
Set rng = .Range("A2", .Range("A" & .Rows.Count).End(xlUp))
Set rng2 = rng.Offset(0, 1)
cocount = WorksheetFunction.CountIfs(rng, c1, rng2, c2)
End With
End Function
If I understand correctly, you are trying to count the number of times that c1 and c2 = B# and C# where # is the same row.
Public Function cocount(c1 As String, c2 As String) As Integer
Dim Count As Integer, iRow as Integer
Count = 0
For iRow = 2 to Sheets("Raw").Cells(Rows.Count, "B").End(xlUp).Row
If Cells(iRow, "B") = c1 And Cells(iRow,"C") = c2 Then
Count = Count + 1
End If
Next iRow
cocount = Count
End Function
Check the genre column in "raw" for
matches with the first input. Then, take that ID and find a cell that
matches the ID and the second input.
try this:
Public Function cocount(FirstKey$, SecondKey$, FirstRng As Range, SecondRng As Range) As Long
Dim FirstAccurance As Range, ID$
Set FirstAccurance = FirstRng.Find(FirstKey, , xlValues, xlWhole, xlByRows, xlNext, 0)
ID = Cells(FirstAccurance.Row, SecondRng.Column).Value2
cocount = WorksheetFunction.CountIfs(SecondRng, ID, FirstRng, SecondKey)
End Function
test:
I have a worksheet which imports all of my orders, however when creating labels, I only have a limited amount of space for the title. I'm using a Find & Replace Macro in Excel which looks in my current active imported worksheet, and replaces with text from another worksheet which I use as a table with 2 columns, Column A is what the title is when imported and Column B is what I want to change it to. This script works perfectly fine except it doesn't find columns that have a different beginning. For example:
Imported Worksheet:
Entry 1: BANANAS
Entry 2: 30 X BANANAS
Table:
Column A: BANANAS
Column B: Yellow Bananas
//Script Runs//
Output:
Imported Worksheet:
Entry 1: Yellow Bananas
Entry 2: 30 X BANANAS
As you can see in the example above, the "30 X BANANAS" entry does not change to "30 X Yellow Bananas", as I would want it to. I'm guessing I need to add a wildcard line of code to my script below, but I'm not sure how to incorporate it?
Sub FindReplace()
Dim s As String
Dim cell As Range
For Each cell In Range("H3:H5000").Cells
If cell <> "" Then
ans = Application.VLookup(cell, Sheets("Script").Range("A1:B1000"), 2, 0)
If Not IsError(ans) Then cell = ans
End If
Next cell
End Sub
If you use the Range.Replace function rather than the VLookup function, you will get the result you are looking for.
Before
After
Sub FindNReplace()
Dim InputRng As Range, ReplaceRng As Range
'Set Range Values
Set InputRng = Range("A1:A5")
Set ReplaceRng = Sheets("Script").Range("A1:B100")
'Spin through replacement range and perform replace
For Each Rng In ReplaceRng.Columns(1).Cells
InputRng.Replace what:=Rng.Value, replacement:=Rng.Offset(0, 1).Value
Next
End Sub
I have an XL file with some data to be manipulated. I think I will need to use a VB script to do this - but perhaps there is a simpler way with a formula. Just the same, could someone point out BOTH ways of achieving the following?
I have a column of numeric values (ID) in Sheet 1.
I want to use each ID as an index to lookup a list in Sheet 2.
Sheet 2 has two columns
First column is the index and Second column is the Text String
e.g.
1 Apple
2 Orange
3 Pear
What I want is to replace the column of IDs in sheet 1 with the looked up text string from Sheet 2!
Thats all...
Please help!
Not a tough situation there. Here are some solutions...
With VBA:
I know you said you're a little new with VB so I tried to explain each line as I went along. Also, the code is free-handed so forgive me if I left an error in there somewhere.
Sub replaceData()
dim i as integer, j as integer 'These are just some variables we'll use later.
dim sheetOne as worksheet, sheetTwo as worksheet, myWb as workbook
dim myData as string, myId as string
set myWB = excel.activeworkbook 'These three lines set your workbook/sheet variables.
set sheetOne = myWB.worksheets("Old Data")
set sheetTwo = myWB.worksheets("New Data")
for i = 1 to sheetTwo.usedrange.rows.count 'This loops through the rows on your second sheet.
myId = sheetTwo.cells(i,1).value 'This assigns the value for your id and the data on your second sheet.
myData = sheetTwo.cells(i,2).value
for j = 1 to sheetOne.usedrange.rows.count 'This loops through the rows on your first sheet.
if sheetOne.cells(j,1).value = myId then 'This checks each row for a matching id value.
sheetOne.cells(j,1).value = myData 'This replaces that id with the data we got from the second sheet.
end if
next j
next i
end sub
With an Excel formula:
Place the following formula in cell C1 of the first worksheet (the
sheet with the IDs you will be replacing). **Note that you will
have to replace the "InsertSheetTwoNameHere" portion with the name
of your second sheet (don't remove those single quotes though). Also
note you will need to replace the "1000" with the number of the last
used row in sheet two.
=vlookup(A1,’InsertSheetTwoNameHere’!$A$1:$B$1000,2,FALSE)
Next simply drag the handle on the cell that makes it copy itself
(whatever the heck it's called) all the way down to the end of your
range.
Next, copy those cells and then paste them over the IDs using the
Values Only setting.
Hope this helps and good luck.
I have a small script in Excel/VB that I'm trying to get working. All I want to do is select a dynamic range of data to copy but I can't seem to find any help/code on how to get the grid data (like A11).
Here is code I have from macro recording that selects the range of data:
Range("D291:D380").Select
I was hoping I could just do Range(Current).Select or something but that doesn't work.
How do I get the current cell using VBA?
Have you tried:
For one cell:
ActiveCell.Select
For multiple selected cells:
Selection.Range
For example:
Dim rng As Range
Set rng = Range(Selection.Address)
This may not help answer your question directly but is something I have found useful when trying to work with dynamic ranges that may help you out.
Suppose in your worksheet you have the numbers 100 to 108 in cells A1:C3:
A B C
1 100 101 102
2 103 104 105
3 106 107 108
Then to select all the cells you can use the CurrentRegion property:
Sub SelectRange()
Dim dynamicRange As Range
Set dynamicRange = Range("A1").CurrentRegion
End Sub
The advantage of this is that if you add new rows or columns to your block of numbers (e.g. 109, 110, 111) then the CurrentRegion will always reference the enlarged range (in this case A1:C4).
I have used CurrentRegion quite a bit in my VBA code and find it is most useful when working with dynmacially sized ranges. Also it avoids having to hard code ranges in your code.
As a final note, in my code you will see that I used A1 as the reference cell for CurrentRegion. It will also work no matter which cell you reference (try: replacing A1 with B2 for example). The reason is that CurrentRegion will select all contiguous cells based on the reference cell.
The keyword "Selection" is already a vba Range object so you can use it directly, and you don't have to select cells to copy, for example you can be on Sheet1 and issue these commands:
ThisWorkbook.worksheets("sheet2").Range("namedRange_or_address").Copy
ThisWorkbook.worksheets("sheet1").Range("namedRange_or_address").Paste
If it is a multiple selection you should use the Area object in a for loop:
Dim a as Range
For Each a in ActiveSheet.Selection.Areas
a.Copy
ThisWorkbook.worksheets("sheet2").Range("A1").Paste
Next
Regards
Thomas
If you're trying to grab a range with a dynamically generated string, then you just have to build the string like this:
Range(firstcol & firstrow & ":" & secondcol & secondrow).Select
I realize this doesn't directly apply from the title of the question, However some ways to deal with a variable range could be to select the range each time the code runs -- especially if you are interested in a user-selected range. If you are interested in that option, you can use the Application.InputBox (official documentation page here). One of the optional variables is 'type'. If the type is set equal to 8, the InputBox also has an excel-style range selection option. An example of how to use it in code would be:
Dim rng as Range
Set rng = Application.InputBox(Prompt:= "Please select a range", Type:=8)
Note:
If you assign the InputBox value to a none-range variable (without the Set keyword), instead of the ranges, the values from the ranges will be assigned, as in the code below (although selecting multiple ranges in this situation may require the values to be assigned to a variant):
Dim str as String
str = Application.InputBox(Prompt:= "Please select a range", Type:=8)
Try this
Dim app As Excel.Application = Nothing
Dim Active_Cell As Excel.Range = Nothing
Try
app = CType(Marshal.GetActiveObject("Excel.Application"), Excel.Application)
Active_Cell = app.ActiveCell
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.Message)
Exit Sub
End Try
' .address will return the cell reference :)
