I am trying to customize (add my own menus to the) Windows Explorer toolbar. From web I came to know that it is possible to that by editing the registry. So I changed the owner of
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{5c4f28b5-f869-4e84-8e60-f11db97c5cc7}\TasksItemsSelected\]
and set permissions as full control to me. Adding keys to the above registry didn’t work for me in windows 7 and 8 as well.
I installed the tools “ CustomExplorerToolbar.exe" and “ExplorerToolbarEditor.exe” that worked in windows 7 but not in windows 8. Also using that tool I can only add existing menus but not create new one.
So I did the technique as described below,
I created a shell in commandstore.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CommandStore\shell\command1]
And called that in,
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{5c4f28b5-f869-4e84-8e60-f11db97c5cc7}\TasksItemsSelected\]
#=”command1”
The above method worked for me in windows 7, But it is not working in windows 8. Is there any method to implement that?
Thanks in advance.

All I am doing is creating a new blank app: New Project - Windows - Universal - Blank App. Then open MainPage.xaml, and all I see is raw XAML, no Design tab. View Designer (shft-F7) does not help.
This is on Win 10, developer mode on.
It does not seem likely that something is wrong with the VS installation, because I when I open MSDN UWP samples, XAML files in those samples open just fine. I tried reinstalling VC++ 2015 redistributable, as suggested in one of the posts here, did not help.
XAML designer is enabled (Tools - Options - XAML Designer).
The problem turned out to be the fact that my project target version (right click on Project - Properties - Application) was Windows 10 Insider Preview (Build 10563). Changing it to Windows 10 (Build 10240) fixes the issue.
I am trying to record a Web Performance Test using the Web Test Recorder 12.00 plugin that comes with VS 2013.
This is what I get when the toolbar opens:
As you can see the buttons are greyed out and disabled.
I have followed this work around, but without any luck.
Are there any restrictions for this tool?
Is that a known issue?
I have disabled the Web Test Recorder Helper Add-on and restarted IE, and enabled Add-on again. And it worked for me.
I'm brand new to performance testing, and ran into the same problem using VS 2015, Win 7, IE11. The culprit in my case was an IE11 add-on called "Office Document Cache Handler". Microsoft was the one that created the add-on (which I find rather frustrating), but hopefully this helps someone down the road.
This is a known issue. Been around for years. Unfortunately, Microsoft has no sure fire method to resolve it.
I am currently having this issue and would really like to find a supported solution, as I will not be shelling out the big bucks for 2013 Ultimate with this issue stopping me from using it for web load testing.
Issues with this have been under discussion on msdn since at least 2007: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mtaute/archive/2007/11/09/diagnosing-and-fixing-web-test-recorder-bar-issues.aspx
3rd party edit
The link above contains different "fixes" depending on the OS and the VS version. The version 2013 was not mentioned. But to include at least some information the following quotes are extracts from Michael Taute (MSFT) post:
VSTS 2005: Vista:
Recorder bar displays, but the controls are disabled.
Fix: Webtest recording using VS 2005 on Vista only works when running in
elevated mode. [When launching VS 2005, right click the icon and choose to
run as administrator]
or
VSTS 2005, 2008: Windows 2003/Vista:
Recorder bar comes up, but the controls are disabled.
Fix: the web test recorder bar does not work with IE enhanced security
enabled. (VSTS 2008 will actually display an error message telling you
this) IE enhanced security can be removed from within the Control
panel / Add Remove Programs / Windows Setup
or
VSTS 2005, 2008, 2010 Beta 1: Windows 7:
When launching the recorder, the recorder bar does not appear
Fix: The Windows 7 security model is slightly different than previous
versions of windows. (go figure :)
To get the recorder to show up, you’ll have to run Visual Studio
in elevated mode.
I've got TWO addons:
Microsoft Web Test Recorder 12.0 Helper (Publisher = "Microsoft Corporation")
Web Test Recorder 12.0 (Publisher = "Not Available")
Both of them should be enabled, otherwise recorder toolbar is grayed out or not displayed at all. I'm running Windows 10 and VS 2013 update 5.
Instead of adding 'WebAndLoadTestProject' to existing solution, Start with new solution as given in below steps.
Open Visual studio in 'Run As Administration' mode
Create new project -> Test -> add 'Web performance And Load Test Project'.WebAndLoadTestProject
This opens IE browser with record button enabled state.
I'd like to know how make my app able to receive links from other apps with the Share option of Windows Phone. I've heard of editing the package.appxmanifest file but I can't find it and can't find out how to create it (read this here).
If anyone can help me... help me please !
OK I finally found where I was wrong : if you have the same problem, upgrade the solution to Windows Phone 8.1 (updating Visual Studio to Update 2 before) and then the file will magically appear in the Solution Explorer. You're welcome.
In the Windows 8 Start screen, I noticed that there is an Uninstall icon that appears at the bottom if you right-click on an app. For the apps that I developed, if I click on the Uninstall icon, it opens the "Programs and Features" dialog. Ideally it should instead directly launch my uninstaller. Does anyone know how to do that? Is there some registry key I need to set to associate Start Menu shortcuts with uninstallers?
I use various technologies to make my apps (e.g. Qt, C#, Visual Studio setup projects, NSIS). On Windows 7 and below, my installers put shortcuts in the Start Menu. On Windows 8, those shortcuts are displayed as a little square in the Start screen. So that shortcut is the object I am right-clicking on. Is there some way to add uninstall data to the shortcut file itself?
Tiles for desktop applications do not automatically uninstall like tiles for store applications. Choosing 'Uninstall' for a desktop applications tile launches the Add / Remove programs experience as you pointed out. This is by design.
If you make deployment of your non-metro (old style) application you have basically two options:
put the shortcut to the main executable file in the start menu
(default and recommended by the guidelines for the Windows Logo)
put the shortcut to the main executable file on the desktop (optional).
There is no start menu in the Windows 8 RTM. How do I create a program's shortcut for the non-metro applications in the Windows 8?
For non-Store apps, if you specify the Start menu for an icon, it is added to the new Windows 8 Start Page. If you specify an app for the desktop, it will be added to the desktop.
