Is it possible to have some "default" queue for a rabbitmq exchange with a type 'direct'?
Like, i have an exchange A and queues Q1,Q2,Q3,QDef . so if somethign is published with routing key Q1. it will go to to Q1.
But if a message is with a routing key Q4 then it should go to QDef.
If routing key is not name of existent queue then a message should go to QDef.
Is it possible to do with a rabbitmq? Maybe exchange should not be of a type 'direct' but some other type?
With other words.
If some consumer declared a queue for some routing key then messages should go to this queue. If not then messages should go to a default consumer.
You can obtain the intended behavior by using and alternate exchange (AE).
So you should define the AE for you exchange A and bind your queue QDef to it. Unroutable messages will be delivered to it.

Yes, the feature is called Alternate Exchanges, and it works like this:
You set a "policy" which matches exchange A, with a key of 'alternate-exchange' and a value naming exchange B. Alternatively, you can set it as a property directly when creating the exchange.
Any message routed to exchange A which doesn't match any binding will be routed to exchange B.
Exchange B processes it in the normal way, and can even have an Alternate Exchange of its own.
I have a situation when I need to create a route for my messages but I would like to use a matching pattern with negation, like !myPattern.
Example:
I have a queue bound in a Topic Exchange and the routing key is #.brazil.#. So it means that this queue will only receive messages when in the message's routing key contains ".brazil." like message.brazil.denmark.
Now I want to create another queue and bind to the same Topic Exchange but I want to receive all messages that don't contain the pattern #.brazil.#, something like !(#.brazil.#).
I was making some tests using Headers Exchange but the x-match argument only can have 2 possible values: any and all, and I need something like except.
Basically it is not possible to use negation in RabbitMQ even in routing key or header's attribute.
As far as I found out, there are 3 options here:
1 - Using an alternate exchange feature
Declare a fanout exchange you'll publish to (let's call it "my-exchange").
Declare a fanout exchange called "junk".
When each consumer declares a queue, it also declares a topic exchange
and a fanout exchange.
The alternate-exchange for the topic exchange should be set to the fanout exchange.
It then binds the topic exchange to "my-exchange", and "junk" to the topic
exchange, with a routing key equal to the topics it doesn't want.
Thus messages with the "bad" routing key go:
[my-exchange] -> [per-consumer-topic] -> [junk]
and the rest go:
[my-exchange] -> [per-consumer-topic] -> [per-consumer-fanout] ->
[per-consumer-queue]

2 - Using a Router Consumer
On this solution, you will have only 1 consumer bound in your queue, and the
unique responsibility of this consumer will be "redirect" the message to other
exchanges based on your rules.
Now your router logic will be centralized on this "orchestrator" and not in
RabbitMQ anymore (routing keys or header's attr).
3 - Using a Fanout Exchange
This solution is simple but has a huge drawback, scaling.
Basically you will have a Fanout Exchange responsible to deliver the message to
all bound queues and all consumers will receive the message and check if it
should process or discard the message, it means that now the "router logic"
will be on the consumer side.
The problem with this solution is if you want to scale a specific consumer and
your process is not idempotent you will process the message more than 1 time
(the number of instances running of your consumer).
So in my case, the best approach was the Router Consumer.
I wonder if the following scenario is possible:
Create an exchange of type direct
Publish a message to that exchange with routing key rk1
After that:
Create a queue which accepts messages with routing key rk1
Consume message published to exchange
It seems like if there is no queue present, the message is dropped and there is no way to receive it.

Yes, this is correct, but it's only part of the story.
A message queue is the storage location for messages published to the server. A consumer is a designated connection set to receive messages put into a queue. The exchange is simply a location to push messages. It contains the routing semantics to determine which messages wind up in the queues on the server. When a message cannot be routed to a queue and/or consumer, there are various semantics that can apply, but the default is that the message is dropped.
Options for dealing with unroutable messages:
Alternate exchange - designates a different exchange where messages can be dumped if they cannot be routed to a queue on the current exchange. This can be thought of similar to how TCP/IP works when a destination host is not reachable on the current subnet, and traffic is forwarded to the gateway. Note that a queue must be bound to the alternate exchange for the message to be dumped into. A typical case might be to have it configured as fanout exchange with one queue to trap all messages sent into the alternate exchange.
Mandatory or Immediate - return a message back to the sender if it can't be delivered. The server does not store the message.
Mandatory designates that the message must be deliverable to a queue at the time it is published. If the message is not routable, the publisher will receive a basic.return.
Immediate designates that, in addition to being deliverable, must be immediately routed to a consumer on a particular queue (e.g. it's not good enough that it be dumped in a queue for pickup later - it has to be delivered to the end consumer right now.
In every case, if there is no queue, the server cannot store the message.
The entity queue is the one that is supposed to hold the messages , so without a queue the messages will be lost.
However in case you do not create any exchange with appropriate routing key you may leverage dead lettering feature in rabbitmq.
Another solution could be to declare the queue with the binding after the exchange and before publishing the message; this way the message will be routed and stored, but you may have to add some TTLs ( https://www.rabbitmq.com/ttl.html ).
My scenario is such that I want to have one queue for the producer where the published messages will be stored. The messages will be associated with some routing key such that abcd.1234(some id).
Now from the consumer part I want that every consumer will connect to this queue and pop the messages based on the routing key pattern. Such as say consumer for abcd.123 will pop the messages with routing key abcd.123 and so on.
I tried to use topic exchange but I don't think its directly fitting into this use case as topic exchange generates one queue for each subscriber(consumer)
So, in there any way to consume (pop) message from queue based on the routing key of that queue.
Similar to queue.pop(:routing_key:xyz)
kindly help on this how to proceed?
Why do we need routing key to route messages from exchange to queue? Can't we simply use the queue name to route the message? Also, in case of publishing to multiple queues, we can use multiple queue names. Can anyone point out the scenario where we actually need routing key and queue name won't be suffice?
There are several types of exchanges. The fanout exchange ignores the routing key and sends messages to all queues. But pretty much all other exchange types use the routing key to determine which queue, if any, will receive a message.
The tutorials on the RabbitMQ website describes several usecases where different exchange types are useful and where the routing key is relevant.
For instance, tutorial 5 demonstrates how to use a topic exchange to route log messages to different queues depending on the log level of each message.
If you want to target multiple queues, you need to bind them to a fanout exchange and use that exchange in your publisher.
You can't specify multiple queue names in your publisher. In AMQP, you do not publish a message to queues, you publish a message to an exchange. It's the exchange responsability to determine the relevant queues. It's possible that a message is routed to no queue at all and just dropped.
Decoupling queue names from applications is useful for flexibility.
You could establish multiple queues to consume the same message, but queues can't have the same name.
In some cases, message's originator doesn't know the names of queues. (like when you have randomly generated queue names when horizontally scaling a server)
An exchange may be routing messages for more than just one type of consumer. Then you would need some wildcards in your routing keys to route messages to concerned consumers.
