We have an application that can run as a Windows service (or as a user mode app). As part of it's processing, it launches a second executable that interacts with MAPI to read the contents of an MSG file. The executable is 32 bit. Office is 32 bit. So far, we've only tested using Outlook 2013.
This has worked fine for quite some time, but we've recently discovered a corner case where things do not work.
When we run as a Windows Service, and Outlook is not running in the user's session, then the application runs properly. However, if we launch Outlook, then MAPIInitialize fails with a return code of -7 (0xfffffffd).
I've tried calling with and without the MAPI_NT_SERVICE flag added (honestly, I can't figure out what that flag actually does), but it makes no difference.
So far in our testing, the Windows service account has been the same as the user logged into the Windows session that has Outlook installed - not sure if that might be important or not.
I can't for the life of me figure out how a process running under one session could interfere with a process running in another session.

I'll give that a shot, but it seems super unlikely that this could be the issue (it's not like we do anything different with COM initialization, and certainly that wouldn't have anything to do with whether Outlook was running or not).
Can anyone point me in direction(s) to pursue this?

This appears to only happen with Outlook 2013. It definitely does not happen with Outlook 2010.

I have a VB based UI application running, supported by C++ modules through COM.
a month before it started to close randomly without any clue. I initially analyzed in perspective of a application crash and expected to see Dumps and Application/System event log entries. I have prior experience in application crash debugging. tried registry configurations (Like, CorporarteWerServer for application hang, LocalDumps and all that).
But no luck.
End user says they don't see any popup like "This application is not responding with options close/wait". The application just closes down without any prompts.
We have logging enabled where we intentionally close the application using exit(). So it is not closing formally.
User does not have testing environment where we can install debugging tools and monitor.
I have verified for insufficient memory and antivirus software and they are fine.
So, Is there any cases where an application can just simply close/crash without any prompts, logs, dumps ?
Please suggest if I am missing something. Also, is there any built-in windows tools to monitor ?
At a client of mine, in-house applications are all located on a network share. Users create shortcuts to the required applications from the network share so we can easily make sure everyone uses the latest version.
This works fairly well, although we often have an issue when users are still using applications when we'd like to release a new version. For most applications, we'd forcibly remove all the file locks on the server and release the new version. Not a very elegant solution, especially since we need assistance from another department for this.
For newer applications, I've developed a cleaner solution, where the application intermittently checks if it's still the most recent release. If it isn't, it shows a message to the user, asking him to quit the application at first convenience, or within 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, the application quits itself and all is well. However, some users will immediately try to re-start the application. The application will then show a simple MessageBox telling the user this version is currently not supported. My problem is this: while this MessageBox is visible, my executable is still locked.
I'm looking for any of the following solutions:
Releasing all locks on the current assembly files from within code
Showing a message box that lingers after the current assembly has exited
This is exactly precisely the problem that .NET ClickOnce deployment is meant to solve. Users have a shortcut they can click, the latest version is downloaded on application start, and there are no server-side executables to be locked if a user leaves their process open.

I have an outlook addin which is located on the network drive for all users to use.
When network fails may it be because of a cable that plugged out, or a system issue, if at that moment, the user launches Outlook (when no network is available), outlook automatically ticks off the addin out of usage.
For as long as the user doesn't enable it back, the add-in will not load. ever. you can close outlook , reopen it, it won't load the addin if it failed to find the .VSTO file once when outlook started.
Setting the registry value to never disable the addin, isn't effective here, because the addin is not realy disabled, its only been shut off and waiting to be reactivated manually.
I would like it to stop being shut off, or at least auto-enable it self when network is accessible. can this be accomplished without an 3rd party exe running in the background ?
Put the addin locally to each computer and equip those computers with simple script which runs on user logon and copies the addin from its network location to local directory. This will keep your addin both updated and always available.
In case if the network is inaccessible, it is the script (invisible to user), which will fail, not the Outlook. This makes a difference :)
Of course, besides the initial launch of the script, there are also possibilities to re-run it on regular basis (once a day?) when a user is logged on. This will be be effective only when Outlook is not running at the moment, otherwise the addin DLL cannot be overwritten.
It is not a good idea run from a network drive. Why not copy the dll locally when you install your addin?
Why not install locally and then write code to check the network location? If the network is available, compare the remote dll to the local one. If they are different, copy the new dll to the local machine, then adjust the registry entries for that addin. Then display a message to the user to restart the application.
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I'm fairly new to writing services. I've written a service that runs a timer and the timer code runs some checks to ensure our systems are up and running. It's written in VB.Net, framework 1.1. I then install the service using "sc create". The service works beautifully on the XP Pro machine that I'm developing on. However, when I install the service on a Windows 2003 server 64 bit, the service fails with error 1053 immediately. I put some debugging in to write to a text file as the first line of code in the OnStart function but even that doesn't run, so there must be a problem in the program starting up. Finally in desperation I created a brand new Windows Service in a new VB project in Visual Studio 2003 and compiled an empty service that merely declares and sets the value of a string variable in the OnStart function as follows:

Even that failed on the W2K3 server, but works fine on the XP dev machine.
The server has .Net Framework 1.1 installed and working, we use it in our CMS (written in ASP.Net 1.1).
The service runs as the local system account. I tried enabling interaction with the desktop but that didn't help. I ran Process Monitor and there are no access denied events. I emptied the Application Event Log, still doesn't work. No other events to help me out in the logs. Definitely using the Release build of the application. Permissions on the exe file are full control for System and for Admins.
Any ideas anyone? It must be something simple, but I'm damned if I can figure it out!

I don´t think the first point is my problem, partly because the MS article is about stopping or pausing the service, mine fails on starting; but also because the service does not timeout, there is no 30 second wait, it fails immediately. Secondly, when you say add an exception handler to the service startup, do you mean the OnStart sub? I tried adding a debug file write in there, but I'll try adding an event log instead. Regarding the systems checks, it can't be that because the brand new empty test service I created shows the same behaviour and that does not do anything at all. You last point could be the key. My dev environment IS 32bit. I'll do some research on the corflags thing, or perhaps I can build a 64bit dev environment. Many thanks again, you've given me some new things to think about at least!
Ok, have found a workaround. I was putting my exe file in System32. When I put it in a different folder, created by myself, the service ran, albeit briefly. I then had to move the ini file and the log files that it reads/writes to that folder too, rather than System32, and all seems to work nicely. God knows why it doesn't like running from System32 but at least it works now! Thanks for the help guys.

A couple of other things to look out for:
Make sure you don't have either of the following statements in your deployed service:
System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Launch
System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Break
You may need to run the service with an account other than Local System (depending upon the permissions required by your service).
The 1053 error is a timeout related to the service control manager waiting for the service to respond to your start request. There is a knowledgebase article that refers to managed service stop request issues specifically relating to Framework 1.1-based services, so it is not precisely describing your problem, but it may have relevance in your situation. The other suggestion I would make to further diagnose the issue is to determine whether the Start is failing due to a "hidden" exception occurring in your service's startup code; the start call would not see the exception and could make you think it was merely timing out.
I would suggest you add an exception handler to your service startup that does nothing more than log a message to the event log with the particulars of the exception if one is caught. That would at least give you an idea that something is going wrong specifically within the service, and give you more information than you have right now.
One last thought: Does the service check the systems you describe over a network connection? If so, LocalSystem won't have sufficient privileges to perform network access.

Is your development environment/execuable 32-bit? You mention your server is 64-bit, so you may need to use the "corflags" tool that forces 32bit operation on your executable

I have a console application that uses COM automation to manipulate .DOC and .DOCX files in Word 2010. This works in a scheduled task for a not logged in user account on two development machine (running 32 bit Windows Server 2003) but not on another machine (running 64 bit Windows Server 2003). It does run on that machine if run from the command line by the same user account when logged in (so I don’t think it’s a 32/64 bit issue).
The code hangs at the point it tried to open a document not when the Word application is created.
I have logged in as the user account and opened the file manually (so I don’t think it is popping up any dialog boxes).
I thought that it might be something to do with autocorrect and while looking at the proofing options noticed that the “automatically use corrections from the spelling checker” checkbox is greyed out.
I have used process monitor and could not find any file access failures for files which are on the dev machine but not on the other (Word seems to look for Normal.dot in a number of places but this file in not on the dev machine either).
I am aware that Word automation on a server is not recommended or supported by Microsoft and may be outside the terms of the license.
I am using automation as I need to manipulate files for older versions of Word.
This may be related to my other issue with automation from non logged in accounts: Why might COM automation from within a console application work on my development machine but not on another? However this case is different in that opening a file is hanging rather than creation of the application program failing.
What else should I try?
