CMake - How to create executable, but not add to "all" target? - cmake

Using CMake, I have a series of executables that are built, then added as tests, like this:
set(TestID 1)
add_executable (Test${TestID} Test${TestID}.cpp)

add_test( NAME ${TestID} COMMAND Test${TestID} )
This works fineā€”the executables are created and the tests are correctly added. However, I don't want the test executables to be added to the all target.
Instead of having my tests built along with everything else, I would like them built right before the execution of the tests; maybe as part of make test or as part of ctest.
How can I do this?

Set the EXCLUDE_FROM_ALL flag upon creating the test executable target to exclude the target from the all target:
add_executable (Test${TestID} EXCLUDE_FROM_ALL Test${TestID}.cpp)
Making sure that the test targets are built before the execution of the tests is more tricky. You cannot add a dependency to the built-in test target with add_dependencies, because the test target belongs to a group of reserved targets (like all, clean and a few others) that only exist in the created build system.
As a work-around you can use the TEST_INCLUDE_FILES directory property to trigger the build of the required test executables before the tests are run. Create a file BuildTestTargets.cmake.in in the source directory with the following contents:
execute_process(COMMAND "#CMAKE_COMMAND#" --build . --target Test1)
execute_process(COMMAND "#CMAKE_COMMAND#" --build . --target Test2)
Then add the following code to your CMakeLists.txt:
configure_file("BuildTestTargets.cmake.in" "BuildTestTargets.cmake")
set_directory_properties(PROPERTIES TEST_INCLUDE_FILES
"${CMAKE_CURRENT_BINARY_DIR}/BuildTestTargets.cmake")
CTest will then include and run the file BuildTestTargets.cmake as a first step before the tests are run.

CMake: how to make execute_process wait for subdirectory to finish?

Part of my source code is generated by a tool which is also built under our main project with a add_subdirectory. We execute this tool with a execute_process command. Clearly, if the tool is not built before we reach the execute_process statement it will fail.
I use a GLOB (file(GLOB...)) to find the source files generated. I do this because it is not possible to know beforehand how many files are generated, neither their names.
How do I force cmake to wait for the subproject to be compiled before the execute process? I would need something like a DEPENDS property for the execute_process but this option is not available.

Command execute_process executes its COMMAND immediately, at configuration stage. So it cannot be arranged after the executable is created with add_executable command: that executable will be built only at build stage.
You need to build subproject at configuration stage too. E.g. with
execute_process(COMMAND ${CMAKE_COMMAND}

-B ${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR}/generator
-G ${CMAKE_GENERATOR}

The first command invokes cmake for configure the 'generator' project, located under ${CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR}/generator directory. With -G option we use for subproject the same CMake generator, as one used for the main project.
The second command builds that project, so it produces generator executable.
After generator executable is created, you may use it for your project:
execute_process(COMMAND ${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR}/generator/<...>/generator ${CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR}/src)
Here you need to pass absolute path to the generator executable as the first parameter to COMMAND: CMake no longer have generator executable target, so it won't substitute its path automatically.
You will need to model this with target dependencies. The tool "generator" should be a cmake target. In that case use add_custom_target instead of execute_process somthing like this:
add_custom_target(generate_sources ALL COMMAND generator ${CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR}/src))
Then add a target dependency to "generator" using add_dependencies:
add_dependencies(generate_sources generator)
This will make sure your target "generate_sources", which runs the tool will only run during build after the target "generator" has been compiled.
The following is false, see the comments for more info:
Use add_dependencies to add a dependency from "mainproject.exe" to "generate_sources". Now this I have never tested, so take with a grain of salt: With CMake more recent than version 3.12, according to the entry on file, you should then be able to change your file command to:
file(GLOB GeneratedSources CONFIGURE_DEPENDS ${CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR}/src/*.cpp)
Which I interpret as this will re-glob the files during build if the directory changes.

How to run Clang-based tool as a separate CMake target

I have written a Clang-based tool and I want to run it on existing CMake executable target. I want this to be a separate Makefile target, so I can run it without builiding exe target.
There is a solution to run it during exe target build (described in cmake clang-tidy (or other script) as custom target)

A good starting point is to search for __run_co_compile and try to recreate the command from the Makefile rule (if your generator is make). There's no "automatic" propagation of the attributes, because a custom target or command can be anything. You could use the corresponding cmake variables (e.g. CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS, etc) or target properties (e.g. COMPILE_DEFINITIONS) to emulate that.

cmake add_test() with different runtime_output_directory [duplicate]

I'm trying CTest in CMake in order to automatically run some of my tests using make test target. The problem is CMake does not "understand" that the test I'm willing to run has to be built since it is part of the project.
So I'm looking for a way to explicitly specify this dependency.
It is arguably a bug in CMake (previously tracked here) that this doesn't work out of the box. A workaround is to do the following:
add_test(TestName ExeName)
add_custom_target(check COMMAND ${CMAKE_CTEST_COMMAND}
DEPENDS ExeName)
Then you can run make check and it will compile and run the test. If you have several tests, then you would have to use DEPENDS exe1 exe2 exe3 ... in the above line.
There is actually a way to use make test. You need to define the build of the test executable as one of the tests and then add dependencies between the tests. That is:

I use a variant of richq's answer. In the top-level CMakeLists.txt, I add a custom target, build_and_test, for building and running all tests:

In the various sub-project CMakeLists.txt files under test/, I add each test executable as a dependency of build_and_test:

With this approach, I just need to make build_and_test instead of make test (or make all test), and it has the benefit of only building test code (and its dependencies). It's a shame I can't use the target name test. In my case, it's not so bad because I have a top-level script that does out-of-tree debug and release (and cross-compiled) builds by calling cmake and then make, and it translates test into build_and_test.
Obviously, the GTest stuff isn't required. I just happen to use/like Google Test, and wanted to share a complete example of using it with CMake/CTest. IMHO, this approach also has the benefit of allowing me to use ctest -V, which shows the Google Test output while the tests run:

If you are using CMake >= 3.7, then the recommended approach is to use fixtures:

This does the following:
Adds a test executable target built from test.cpp
Adds a test_build "test" that runs Cmake to build target test
Marks the test_build test to be a setup task of fixture test_fixture
Add a test test that just runs the test executable
Marks the test test to need fixture test_fixture.
So, every time test test is to be run, it first runs test test_build, which builds the necessary executable.

I have just checked that is does what it says with success (CMake 2.8.10).
Save yourself the headache:
make all test
Works out of the box for me and will build dependencies before running the test. Given how simple this is, it almost makes the native make test functionality convenient because it gives you the option of running the last compiling tests even if your code is broken.
For CMake 3.10 or later, another option is to use the TEST_INCLUDE_FILES directory property to set up a script that triggers a build before a test is run. In your outermost CMakeLists.txt add the following code:

The actual test configuration is passed through to the build via the environment variable CMAKE_CONFIG_TYPE. Optionally you can add a --target option to only build targets required by the test.

It is not perfectly correct, as it does not solve the concurrency problem of running ninja all test, in case anyone does that. On the contrary, because now, you have two ninja processes.

All above answers are perfect. But actually CMake use CTest as its testing tools, so the standard method (I think it is) to do the mission is:
enable_testing ()
add_test (TestName TestCommand)
add_test (TestName2 AnotherTestCommand)
Then run cmake and make to build the targets. After that, you can either run make test, or just run
ctest
you will get the result. This is tested under CMake 2.8 .

All the answers are good, but they imply a breach of tradition to run a test by command make test. I've done this trick:
add_test(NAME <mytest>
WORKING_DIRECTORY ${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR}
COMMAND sh -c "make <mytarget>; $<TARGET_FILE:<mytarget>>")
This means that the test consists of building (optionally) and running of executable target.

Adding Condition to CMake add_definitions() command

I have two targets for my CMake file. After I run cmake .. , I can either say make rsutest for unit tests and build a test executable or say make rsu to get a normal executable. If I am building my test target I want to add a define to the test code with add_definitions(-DRSU_TEST) command so that some of the lines in the actual code can be ignored . How can I write my CMake file so #define RSU_TEST line is only active when I build the test target ?

Launch host and target crosscompiling builds inside CMake

Is there a way to configure CMake such that a single make command will launch both host and target builds? I have a project that is meant to be run on a target platform but requires some generated data from a generator that needs to run on the host platform (PC). From CMake's documentation and looking around, I need a 2 pass build - first host to create the generator then the target crosscompiling build. My question is specifically how to launch the 2-pass build with a single make command through CMake configurations (not using an external bash or python script).
