How come NTFS is still a trade secret if there's an open source implementation of it? - ntfs

As I understand it, Tuxera has a community version of its ntfs-3g NTFS driver for *nix which has full source for download. How come MS still regards NTFS as a trade secret?

How to know if a PDF file is connecting a remote server

I received a PDF file, and suspect that it is trying to connect a remote server to track me.
I wondered if there is a way to find out if the PDF file is connecting a remote server through the Internet. Thank you very much.
I would mention that "Prevention is always better than Cure" but there are a few ways to do so. I will only mention the most obvious one here.
Scan that file for viruses before downloading, or open it in the sandbox.
If you are really bent on finding out the root cause of the problem, Packet sniffers like Wireshark should help. I don't recommend having these applications as they are commonly associated with hacking, but having an idea of the connections sent across your network would help in knowing if your PDF file is dogged.
But as always, update your Acrobat Reader to the latest version and scan your computer for viruses regularly.

Dropbox sync bandwidth is it limited?

I have installed dropbox python client for linux and I noticed the sync bandwidth is quite limited:
$ dropbox status
Syncing (252,088 files remaining, 18 days left)
Downloading 252,088 files (35.1 KB/sec, 18 days left)
Is there a way to make it faster?
Note: Yes I have a 100Mbit/s internet connexion...
Firstly, check if there is a 75% cap enabled, as mentioned here
If there isn't then it's probably your Internet, try switching to a different network source (from wireless to wired) or use a different Internet connection. I had the same issue before and it was solved by changing to a different Internet connection, yes I have 100Mbit/s too but it didn't help.
Alternatively
If you already have another synced up dropbox, just copy the files over to the new install of Dropbox, if you're just trying to get the initial sync done.
Also take a look at LAN Sync, a feature in Dropbox
This honestly isn't a SO question because is isn't really a programming question, a forum like Superuser.com might be better suited perhaps.
edit: saw that you already have a superuser account, my bad. :)

Google Drive says Resource.dll has W32/FakeAlert.RV.gen!Eldorado

I received a virus warning when trying to download a compressed .net application folder from Google Drive.
I uploaded the file originally and have scanned it locally and it is virus free.
Using virustotal.com I was able to narrow down the files causing the failure. Both are resource dlls. It is the Resources.resources.dll (English and Spanish versions). However, when I scan the original files prior to publication, all are clean.
Each time, it is Commtouch and F-Prot that find the virus.
What would cause this and how do I fix it?
For anyone interested, Google has created a feature request to allow an admin to permit flagged files for download. This means, if we know it is safe and getting a false positive we can ignore the issue.
It isn't ideal, but at least it allows for this collaboration.

online backup solution with api for desktop

I made a small backup application that simply creates an archive out specified files and folders. Now I need an online service to backup that online. Which service can i use that can be integrated into my app ?
Options I considered:
dropbox is ideal, but they have all but abandoned the desktop.
skydrive has no api.
I couldn't find any free reliable backup service that uses ftp .
anything else ? it should provide 1-2 gb of free space and be reasonably reliable.
Thanks
My app is in C#, but can be ported to any other language as well..
In your case, Amaxon's S3 seems more fitting but that's not free.
Depending on your target audience, you can create a local archive and have that picked up by your regular backup solution. You might try Wuala,or SpiderOak. Expand Wuala by adding your own space. Spideroak is free up to 2GB (more if you invite friends), and also provides a good alternative to Dropbox (if you want to see how to migrate from dropbox to spideroak see my blogpost about that).
Try box.net, now known as box.com or simply Box

Amazon S3 for Software Delivery

I hope someone can help me answer this dilimma I'm having.
I am getting ready to release my new software and its associated content files. Since the File size for the Full version is Huge, I cant use normal software delivery methods. The main download is 450MB and then add-on packs at around 250MB for each add-on product.
So I plan to use Amazon S3 Servers to Host and Deliver Software.
Does anyone have any real-life
situations on the pro's and cons of
this method for the way I want to
use the system?
Does Amazon S3 offer Resumable downloads?
Is there a open source tool that I can use and modify that I can give to my end users to use as a downloader tool, which I can program so that they can download only what they have ordered and also give Expirable download links?
Is there a commercial tool thats available for the above task?
I need some advise on how I would automate all this for each user. Once a customer finalizes an order, I am ok with manually processing som stuff for delivery, but automated is the best.
thanks everyone.
