SQL TOP 1 Syntax for a nested query - sql

New to SQL Server and I am trying to use top 1 to get the company with the most order in my DB within my code that is already working but I don't know how to use it properly. Only missing syntax I think.
Query #1 is working fine:
SELECT
c.CompanyName, COUNT(DISTINCT OrderID) as Nombre_Commande
FROM
Orders O
INNER JOIN
Customers C ON O.CustomerID = c.CustomerID
GROUP BY
c.CompanyName
What I am trying to do
SELECT TOP (1) *
FROM
(SELECT
c.CompanyName, COUNT(DISTINCT OrderID) AS Nombre_Commande
FROM
Orders O
INNER JOIN
Customers C ON O.CustomerID = c.CustomerID
GROUP BY
c.CompanyName)

You need to give the derived table an alias, and also, specifying top without an order by clause is pretty pointless as rows are returned as a set without any order unless the order is explicitly specified with an order by clause:
SELECT TOP (1) *
FROM (
SELECT c.CompanyName, COUNT(DISTINCT OrderID) as Nombre_Commande
FROM Orders O
INNER JOIN Customers C ON O.CustomerID=c.CustomerID
GROUP by c.CompanyName
) AS YourTable
ORDER BY something_meaningful_maybe_nombre_commande?

How about this?
SELECT TOP 1 c.CompanyName, COUNT(DISTINCT OrderID) as Nombre_Commande
FROM Orders O INNER JOIN
Customers C
ON O.CustomerID = c.CustomerID
GROUP by c.CompanyName
ORDER BY Nombre_Commande DESC;
This assumes that Nombre_Commande is what you want to order by.
By the way, I would be surprised if COUNT(DISTINCT) were really needed for this query. COUNT(*) or COUNT(OrderId) should be sufficient.

I'm new to SQL Server and I'm trying to do some exercises. I want to find customers who bought least on W3schools database. My solution for this case is:
Join Customers with OrderDetails via CustomerID
Select CustomerNames that have least OrderID appeared after using JOIN.
Here is my query:
SELECT COUNT(OrderID), CustomerID
FROM Orders
GROUP BY CustomerID
ORDER BY COUNT(CustomerID) ASC
HAVING COUNT(OrderID) = '1'
When I ran this query, message says "Syntax error near "Having". What happened with my query?
Please help me to figure out.

name. Your query does neither of the two things...

To get the list of customers who have at least 1 order:
SELECT C.CustomerName FROM [Customers] AS C

To get the list of customers who have exactly 1 order:
SELECT C.CustomerName FROM [Customers] AS C
JOIN [Orders] AS O
ON C.CustomerID = O.CustomerID
GROUP BY C.CustomerID
HAVING COUNT(O.OrderID) = 1
ORDER BY C.CustomerName
To get the customer who made the least number of orders:
Including the ones who made no order. Use JOIN instead of LEFT JOIN if you only want to consider the ones who made at least one order.
You can remove LIMIT 1 to get the whole list sorted by the number of orders placed.
SELECT C.CustomerName, COUNT(O.OrderID) FROM [Customers] AS C
LEFT JOIN [Orders] AS O
ON C.CustomerID = O.CustomerID
GROUP BY C.CustomerID
ORDER BY COUNT(O.OrderID), C.CustomerName

The ORDER BY clause has to come after the HAVING clause.
You want a TOP 1 WITH TIES query, something like this:
SELECT TOP 1 WITH TIES CustomerID
FROM Orders
GROUP BY CustomerID
ORDER BY COUNT(OrderID);
In case you are using MySQL, try the following version:
SELECT CustomerID
FROM Orders
GROUP BY CustomerID
HAVING COUNT(OrderID) = (
SELECT COUNT(OrderID)
FROM ORDERS
GROUP BY CustomerID
ORDER BY COUNT(OrderID)
LIMIT 1
);

Why use GROUP BY in WINDOW FUNCTION

Im currently working with the northwind database and want to see the companies with more orders place in 1997. Im being ask to use windows function so i wrote this
select c.customerid,
c.companyname,
rank() over (order by count(orderid) desc )
from customers c
inner join orders o on c.customerid = o.customerid
where date_part('year',orderdate) = 1997;
However this code ask me to use GROUP BY with c.customerid. And i simply don't understand why. Supposedly this code will give me all the customers id and names and after that the window function kicks in giving them a rank base on the amount of orders. So why group them?

rank() over (order by count(orderid) desc )
You have an aggregate function in the over() clause of the window function (count(orderid)), so you do need a group by clause. Your idea is to put in the same group all orders of the same customer:
select c.customerid,
c.companyname,
rank() over (order by count(*) desc) as rn
from customers c
inner join orders o on c.customerid = o.customerid
where o.orderdate = date '1997-01-01' and o.orderdate < '1998-01-01'
group by c.customerid;
Notes:
Filtering on literal dates is much more efficient than applying a date function on the date column
count(orderid) is equivalent to count(*) in the context of this query
Postgres understands functionnaly-dependent column: assuming that customerid is the primary key of customer, it is sufficient to put just that column in the group by clause
It is a good practice to give aliases to expressions in the select clause
Another good practice is to prefix all columns with the (alias of) table they belong to
You would use it correctly in an aggregation query. That would be:
select c.customerid, c.companyname, count(*) as num_orders,
rank() over (order by count(*) desc) as ranking
from customers c inner join
orders o
on c.customerid = o.customerid
where date_part('year',orderdate) = 1997
group by c.customerid, c.companyname;
This counts the number of orders per customer in 1997. It then ranks the customers based on the number of orders.
I would advise you to use:
where orderdate >= '1997-01-01' and
orderdate < '1998-01-01'
For the filtering by year. This allows Postgres to use an index if one is available.

Getting Latest/Top orderID for each customer in SQL Server

I have a database where it records all the orders of customers. What I'm trying to do is not to get all the orders of each customer, but the latest order the customer made with us. I have already do this by using Sub-Select statement, but because of how many data there is, it is taking alot of time to retrieve. So I was wondering is there another way around this that can speed it up?
Here's the code of using Sub-Select statement I've written:
SELECT Customer.CustomerId,
Customer.Firstname + ' ' + Customer.Surname AS [Customer Name],
(SELECT TOP(1) Orders.OrderId
FROM Orders
WHERE Orders.CustomerId = Customer.CustomerId

If there are indexes created ,rebuilt/refresh the indexes which will help in increasing the performance of the query.
Try creating non clustered indexes which will speed up the execution of the query.

Sometimes using row_number gives better results, so you could try something like this:
select * from (
SELECT
C.CustomerId,
C.Firstname + ' ' + C.Surname AS [Customer Name],
O.OrderId,
O.Item,
row_number() over (partition by O.CustomerId order by O.OrderId desc) as RN
FROM
Customer C
join Orders O on O.CustomerId = O.CustomerId
) X
where RN = 1
If there's a lot of orders and customers this can be slow too since there's no search criteria. You should also check indexing, especially Orders.CustomerId.
Didn't try this, so hopefully there's no syntax errors :)

SQL Query for counting number of orders per customer and Total Dollar amount

I have two tables
Order with columns:
OrderID,OrderDate,CID,EmployeeID
And OrderItem with columns:
OrderID,ItemID,Quantity,SalePrice
I need to return the CustomerID(CID), number of orders per customer, and each customers total amount for all orders.
So far I have two separate queries. One gives me the count of customer orders....
SELECT CID, Count(Order.OrderID) AS TotalOrders
FROM [Order]
Where CID = CID
GROUP BY CID
Order BY Count(Order.OrderID) DESC;
And the other gives me the total sales. I'm having trouble combining them...
SELECT CID, Sum(OrderItem.Quantity*OrderItem.SalePrice) AS TotalDollarAmount
FROM OrderItem, [Order]
WHERE OrderItem.OrderID = [Order].OrderID
GROUP BY CID
I'm doing this in Access 2010.
You would use COUNT(DISTINCT ...) in other SQL engines:
SELECT CID,
Count(DISTINCT O.OrderID) AS TotalOrders,
Sum(OI.Quantity*OI.SalePrice) AS TotalDollarAmount
FROM [Order] O
INNER JOIN [OrderItem] OI
ON O.OrderID = OI.OrderID
GROUP BY CID
Order BY Count(DISTINCT O.OrderID) DESC
Which Access unfortunately does not support. Instead you can first get the Order dollar amounts and then join them before figuring the order counts:
SELECT CID,
COUNT(Orders.OrderID) AS TotalOrders,
SUM(OrderAmounts.DollarAmount) AS TotalDollarAmount
FROM [Orders]
INNER JOIN (SELECT OrderID, Sum(Quantity*SalePrice) AS DollarAmount

If you need to include Customers that have orders with no items (unusual but possible), change INNER JOIN to LEFT OUTER JOIN.
Create a query which uses your 2 existing queries as subqueriers, and join the 2 subqueries on CID. Define your ORDER BY in the parent query instead of in a subquery.

Need hints on seemingly simple SQL query

I'm trying to do something like:
SELECT c.id, c.name, COUNT(orders.id)
FROM customers c
JOIN orders o ON o.customerId = c.id
However, SQL will not allow the COUNT function. The error given at execution is that c.Id is not valid in the select list because it isn't in the group by clause or isn't aggregated.
I think I know the problem, COUNT just counts all the rows in the orders table. How can I make a count for each customer?

When using an aggregate function like that, you need to group by any columns that aren't aggregates:
SELECT c.id, c.name, COUNT(orders.id)
FROM customers c
JOIN orders o ON o.customerId = c.id
GROUP BY c.id, c.name
If you really want to be able to select all of the columns in Customers without specifying the names (please read this blog post in full for reasons to avoid this, and easy workarounds), then you can do this lazy shorthand instead:

I think this solution is much cleaner than grouping by all of the columns. Grouping on the orders table first and then joining once to each customer row is likely to be much more efficient than joining first and then grouping.
The following will count the orders per customer without the need to group the overall query by customer.id. But this also means that for customers with more than one order, that count will repeated for each order.
SELECT c.id, c.name, COUNT(orders.id) over (partition by c.id)
FROM customers c
JOIN orders ON o.customerId = c.id
