Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio connection error - ssms

I am getting an error while opening the Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Management Studio:
named pipe error 40( Microsoft SQL server could not connect) Microsoft SQL server error: 67.

Possible reasons:
1) You entered an invalid Server Name\named Instance.
2) You installed MS SQL SERVER 2014 in a PC joined in a domain where the user has restrictions in accessing through the Database, because most of domains controller/server have installed SQL SERVER Express edition on it.
If you want to ask how I know about the reasons, it's because I experienced the same problem as before and talked directly to our System Admin/Head IT Department about the issue.

Error starting SQL Server configuration manager

Trying to open SQLSTD configuration file, but can't access it. Anything am doing wrong here? I have all the permission
Error message when you open SQL Server Configuration Manager in SQL Server: "Cannot connect to WMI provider. You do not have permission or the server is unreachable"
Please help
MS KB shows some cause and fixes as well
Cause:
This problem occurs because the WMI provider is removed when you uninstall an instance of SQL Server. The 32-bit instance and the 64-bit instance of SQL Server share the same WMI configuration file. This file is located in the %programfiles(x86)% folder.
Resolution:
run below commmand in command prompt
mofcomp "%programfiles(x86)%\Microsoft SQL Server\number\Shared\sqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"
Your number depends on version you are using
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 110
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 100
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 100
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 90
Re-installation of sql server worked for me

SQL Server 2008 R2 login not working

I have just installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio. But I do not know what is the default login.
I searched over internet for solution, but no luck!
I have tried following solutions:
Server Type: Database Engine
Server Name: .
Authentication: Windows Authentication
and
Server Type: Database Engine
Server Name: .\SqlExpress
Authentication: Windows Authentication
But not sure why not working, I keep getting the following error:
Connect to Server
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an
error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL
Provider, error: 0 - The message received was unexpected or badly
formatted.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -2146893018)
There is no default login for windows authentication. I believe you need to add the current user as an administrator to login. Did you select SQL and Windows authentication and provide an SA password?
OP, has your computer had any recent updates? The SQL services tend to stop when system receives big updates, check that there are no services stopped.
The only reason I'm assuming this is your solution is because I see you can't even log in with Windows Authentication
It looks like you have only installed SQL Management Studio and not SQL Server with Tools i.e. SQL Server plus SSMS. I guess this is what you need?
It looks like you have only installed SQL Management Studio and not SQL Server with Tools i.e. SQL Server plus SSMS. I guess this is what you need? Also there is nothing wrong with your machine it is just that you require an instance of sql and you have only installed the management studio so you now just need to install sql server 2008 R2 express (FREE) I would suggest.

problem in connecting studio management to sql server

I had installed SQL Server 2008, but faced some complications with that. I then installed SQL Server 2005, and now installed SQL Server Management Studio for SQL Server 2005 successfully.
I am not able to connnect to the server name it suggests.
TITLE: Connect to Server
Cannot connect to POONAM-C586A95C\SQLEXPRESS.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This version of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express can only be used to connect to SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 servers. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionDlg)
It doesn't show any other option of SQL Server name, though I changed the name as I remembered but for no good.
How can this be solved?
It sounds as if you're trying to connect to the 2008 instance with the 2005 SSMS. It's not clear whether you un-installed the 2008 instance.
Suggest installing the SQL Server 2008 SSMS.
Confirm/modify as needed that you're running the SQL Server instance that you require. This will show you which instances are available.
I would also check to make sure that you're connecting to the correct port. I'm come across a similar error before and the solution was to specify the port to connect to, i.e.
compname\instancename,portnum

Problems getting SQL Server 2005 Project REAL to work in SQL Server 2008 R2

I'm learning how to use SQL Server 2008's Analysis Services, and discovered Microsoft's Project Real. It looks like a great way to learn how to use Business Intelligence Tools on a real-world example.
Unfortunately, Project REAL's use SQL Server 2005 databases, and I get an error message when I try to attach them using SQL Server 2008 Management Studio: "Unable to open the physical file. Operating system error 5: Failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105".
Has anyone managed to get Project REAL working with SQL Server 2008 R2?
The solution is to run SSMS as Adminstrator (i.e. "Run as Administrator"). Then you have permission to attach databases.

SQL Server Management Studio won't connect to Sql Server

I've installed Visual Web Developer 2010, SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Management Studio 2008, using the MS Web Platform Installer 2.0. But whenever I wanna login, with Windows Authentication, to SQL Server with the Sql Management Studio it throws me an error: Cannot connect to (local)
And then under that, it says that it can't find the server or it can't access it.
I used to use the Sql Management Studio 2005 before and I could connect easily. But with this version it seems there are some issues. Can someone help me, please? Thank you.
Check in the "SQL Server Configuration Manager" the instance is correct if you are trying to access.
If it is not the default instance, you must access by < computer_name >\< instance_name > (eg: MyComputer\SQLEXPRESS)
If still you do not connect, try the replace < computer_name > by "localhost" or "127.0.0.1"
Do you have multiple versions of SQL Server installed?
If so, you will need to specify the full instance name.
