IF statement on query results - sql

I have the results of the query below emailed everyday 90% of the time empty. I would like to add an if statement to only send the email If (resulting row count>0)

Any DML(SELECT,INSERT,UPDATE) operations in SQLServer captured in global variable called ##ROWCOUNT. Use that in your case as well.

SQL with as expression shows multiple results

I am writing a SQL query using with as expression. I always get a result in the square of what I required.

When I run the query I get exactly the square of the result.
I want to compare sale monthly with last year.

I should get only 3 rows instead of 9 rows.
You need to properly join your two CTE - the way you're doing it now, you're getting a Cartesian product of each row in either CTE together.
Do something like:

What that join condition is going to be - I have no idea, and cannot tell from your question - but you have to define how these two sets of data "connect" ....
It could be something like:
SELECT *
FROM TABLE_CURRENT curr
INNER JOIN TABLE_LAST last ON curr.CURR_YEAR_MONTH = last.LAST_YEAR_MONT
or whatever else makes sense in your situation - but basically, you need to somehow "tie together" these two sets of data and get only those rows that make sense - not just every row from "last" combined with every row from "curr" ....
While you already got the answer on how to join the two results, I thought I'd tell you how to typically approach such problems.
From the same table, you want two sums on different conditions (different years that is). You solve this with conditional aggregation, which does just that: aggregate (sum) based on a condition (year).

Can my query be made more efficient, and how about adding a GROUP BY clause?

I am trying to write a query that returns:
The total amount of transactions that occurred before a date range, for a particular customer.
The total amount of transactions that occurred within a date range, for a particular customer.
The total amount of payments that occurred before a date range, for a particular customer.
The total amount of payments that occurred within a date range, for a particular customer.
To that end, I've come up with the following query.

This query seems to give the results I want. I used the subqueries because I couldn't seem to figure out how to accomplish the same thing using JOINs. But I have a few questions.
Does this query retrieve the transaction and payment data for every single customer before filtering it according to my WHERE condition? If so, that seems like a big waste. Can that be improved?
I'd also like to add a GROUP BY to total each payment and transaction column by BillingCategory. But how can you add a GROUP BY clause here when the SELECTed columns are limited to aggregate functions if they are not in the GROUP BY clause?
The Transactions and Payments tables both have foreign keys to the Customers table.

You could build your sums seperately for Transactions and Payments in a CTE and then join them together:

You can do with sub-queries to be more efficient. Pre-query grouped by each customer for only those customers who qualify by the categories in question. These sub-queries will always result in an at-most, 1 record per customer so you don't get a Cartesian result. Get that for your debits and credits and re-join back to your master list of customers with a left-join in case one side or the other (debits/credits) may not exist.

With respect to Thomas's answer, yes they are close. My version also adds the join to the customer table for the specific billing category and here is why. I don't know the size of your database, how many customers, how many transactions. If you are dealing with a large amount that DOES have performance impact, Thomas's version is querying EVERY customer and EVERY transaction. My version is only querying the qualified customers by the billing category criteria you limited.
Again, not knowing data size, if you are dealing with 100k records may be no noticeable performance. If you are dealing with 100k CUSTOMERS, could be a totally different story.

SQL Server Yesterdays Count

I am trying to get a count of all of yesterdays rows. The query i have runs good but does not pick up null values. Is there a way i can query a count of null and non null values?

I would fix your query and do:

For the date part, you could also do:
CAST(CompletedDate as DATE) = CAST(DATEADD(day, -1, GETDATE()) as DATE)
This version is even index-safe in SQL Server (although not necessarily in other databases).
Notes:
The DATE data type considerably simplifies your calculations.
Never use commas in the FROM clause. Always use proper, explicit, standard JOIN syntax.
You should qualify all column names so you (and anyone reading the query) knows what table the column comes from.

Tough T-SQL To Left Join?

I've got a table of ExchangeRates that have a countryid and an exchangeratedate something to this effect:

Notice there can be the same country with a different rate based on the date...so for instance above Euro was .7400 on 2/14/2011 and now is .7700 7/20/2011.
I have another table of line items to list items based on the country..in this table each line item has a date associated with it. The line item date should use the corresponding date and country based on the exchange rate. So using the above data if I had a line item with country Euro on 2/16/2011 it should use the euro value for 2/14/2011 and not the value for 7/20/2011 because of the date (condition er.ExchangeRateDate <= erli.LineItemDate). This would work if I only had one item in the table, but imagine I had a line item date of 8/1/2011 then that condition (er.ExchangeRateDate <= erliLineItemDate) would return multiple rows hence my query would fail...

The issue with this left join...is because the dates are <= the line item date so it returns many records, I would have to somehow do this but dont know how.
The LineItem tables has multiple records and each record could have its own CountryID:

So there are three records for ParentID (ExpenseReportID) = 1. So then I take those records and join the ExchangeRate table where the Country in my line item table = the country of the exchange rate table (that part is easy) BUT the second condition I have to do is the:

But here is where the issue is because that will return multiple rows from my exchange rate table because euro is listed twice.
I may be missing something here, but as I understand it the "dumb" solution to your problem is to use A ROW_NUMBER function and outer filter with your existing "returns too many entries" query (this can also be done with a CTE, but I prefer the derived table syntax for simple cases like this):

It would make your life a lot easier if you could add an additional column to your ExchangeRates table called (something like)
ExchangeRateToDate
A separate process could update the previous entry when a new one was added.
Then, you could just query for LineItemDate >= ExhangeRateDate and <= ExchangeRateToDate
(treating the last one, presumably with a null ExchangeRateToDate, as a special case).
I would create an in memory table creating an ExchangeRate table with ExchangeRateDates From & To.
All that's left to do after this is joining this CTE in your query instead of your ExchangeRate table and add a condition where the date is betweenthe date from/to.

Perhaps you can try using a table expression to get to your TOP 1 and then JOIN to the table expression. Does that make sense? Hope this helps.
This can be solved by using one or more CTEs. This earlier SO question should have the needed building blocks :

Note that you have to modify this to your own schema, and also filter out results that are closer but in the future.

GetDate() is SQL Server specific, Access has Now() instead.
The DateDiff() function also exists in Access, but the parameter for the interval is different:
DateDiff("d", TransactionDate, Now())
Equivalent of:
DATEDIFF(DAY, c.TransactionDate, GETDATE()) = 0
DATEDIFF("d", c.TransactionDate, Now()) = 0
