I'm creating a new 'Analysis Services Tabular Project' in Visual Studio and the first thing VS asks is:
Select an Analusis Services instance to use while authoring tabular model projects.
I fill in the server and try Test Connecection, the error message I get is:
Cannot connect to server '[server name here]'. Reason: An error occurred while connecting to the server.
The problem is (I think) that the SSAS resides in another domain then my workstation. Is there a way to use other credentials when connecting to SSAS?
Or are there ways to analyse the 'error' in more detail?
If disabling the Firewall or opening the 2382 or 2383 port is not making any sense to make connection to the SSAS server then, there could be below issue. Which I have discovered by spending lot of time research.
To connect to SSAS, SSAS server must have a domain(active directory) installed on it.
The client machine from which you want to access the SSAS must have in the same domain of SSAS server.
If the SSAS server have a no domain, i.e. it is in the default domain (means in WORKGROUP) & the client machine is also in the "WORKGROUP". Then for making connection to SSAS, you have to create same user(with same password) on both the machine (on client & SSAS server). After that you have to add that user in the SSAS-Property-Security access. After that you have to login with the newly created user on the client machine & try for making connection to SSAS.

This was the second time this issue was happening. after a server restart, I couldn't connect to the SSAS tabular model through SSMS with neither my own username (admin) nor the service account.
However, we could all connect to the model from other servers in the network.
The icon changes to this as well :
after restarting the service a few times and restarting the server and running CHKDSK \R on all drives and getting to nowhere, it gets fixed by itself.
We are really concerned as we cannot find the root cause of the issue and don't want this to happen when we go live with the project. any idea?
Please ensure when you are trying to connect to SSAS or SQL locally that you open SSMS with Run as Administrator. My assumption is that your account has been given access through the local Windows Administrators group (rather than through direct permissions on your username or through different group permissions). When that is the case, Run as Administrator is required to utilize those local Administrators group permissions on the local server. This is not the case when connecting remotely to a server.
I have set up an Azure Virtual Machine with a SQL Server 2016 Standard Edition image. I have installed an instance of Analysis Services Tabular on the machine and configured endpoints such that I can access it from my local machine.
I have deployed SQL Server, SSAS Multidimensional, and SSAS Tabular databases to this machine. I am able to connect to the relational databases, and when I connect to Analysis Services I either use the IP Address or DNS name, and I am able to connect to SSAS Multidimensional databases. Usually I would add the suffix \tabular to the Server name to connect to a Tabular Instance when accessing it from Excel/Tableau/other reporting tool.
However using the \tabular suffix in the Server Name I receive the error "Errors in the OLE DB provider. Could not connect to the redirector. Ensure that the SQLBrowser server is running on that server". I have checked the virtual machine, and I have that service running. I'm wondering if perhaps \tabular is not the correct syntax to connect to a tabular instance of an Azure-hosted SQL Server.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
I would RDP to the Server and connect in SSMS to the Tabular instance. Right click on Object Explorer on the Server Node and choose Properties. Go to the General tab and change the Port property to something like 1234 so the Port will be fixed. Restart the SSAS Tabular service. Open Windows Firewall app on the VM and open ports 2382 and 1234. Then edit the Network Security Group for that VM in the Azure portal and open tcp port 2382 for SQL Browser and 1234 (or whatever port you chose) for SSAS Tabular. Now you can connect to either of the following Server names:
Servername\TABULAR
or
Servername:1234
Documentation about this can be found here.
Am hoping i can count on skill set of the experts in the house.
I have a BI solution developed with Microsoft Analysis Services (aka SSAS) and am trying to connect to it via qlikview, the error thrown is
Ensure SQL Server browser is running
and upon ports opened it try to connect and endless asking for user credentials without browsing the cubes.
I have tried couple of suggested solutions such as :
Firstly, the SQL Server browser is running on the said server
Secondly, have opened up the port for SSAS using a fixed port as the instance is a named instance
Also, have opened up the port on which SQL Server browser runs.
Firewall has been switched off on the said port while remote connectivity has been allowed.
Yet the error persists.
Although I can connect with the SSAS database on the local machine.
The problem does lie with trying to connect to SSAS on a remote server connection.
N.B: Am using Qlikview version 11.20, SQL server 2012 while the remote server is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard 64 bit
Kindly be of help here please.

I have OLAP Cube on SQL Server 2008 R2.
I can connect to it from Excel locally (via localhost), but I can't connect from Excel remotely. I get the following error: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it".
I enter server IP address and user credentials, which has reader roles in Cube.
What was the error's reason?
Thank you!
The user of machine from which you are connecting through excel remotely , does that use has rights on remote SSAS server ? If not then you can add this user .
Go to SSMS , Right click on analysis services server desired instance , click on properties , then click on security and check the administrators . You can add this user as administrator .
PTSLITE needs to be installed for the pivot tables in excel.
Ptslite.exe and Ptsfull.exe, are provided on the SQL Server 2000 CD-ROM, in the folder \Msolap\Install\Pts. Ptslite.exe installs the PivotTable Service files only; Ptsfull.exe installs the PivotTable Service files and Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC).
... the target machine actively refused it
Means there is a firewall on the target machine and blocked the port you wanted to connect
or the OLAP service is not working. Since you said "it works locally" this could not be the reason. Another possibility is service is configured to serve only localhost interface.
In my case SSAS was configured with HTTP access. but msmdpump.ini file has wrong ServerName
I have a sharepoint 2010 portal with some dashboards and reports. No I have a permission problem, because I cannot view these reports.
I would like to have a look in Reporting Services Configuration Manager, but I cannot connect to the server where sharepoint and SQL server is installed. I enter the server name and press on find. It gives me the following error:
Unable to connect to the Report Server MYSERVERNAME.
By the way, I try to fix this problem:
AccessDeniedException: The permissions granted to user
'Mydomain\MyUserAccount' are insufficient for performing this
operation.
First off, you probably want to be using SharePoint Central Administration, not RS Configuration Manager. Also, RS Configuration Manager isn't where you'd manage access to report objects.
That said:
Try remoting into the host machine and running the tool locally on the server.
Ensure the proper ports are open for you to be connecting remotely (and that they SHOULD be open - there are very valid security reasons to block them)
Are you 100% certain you're connecting to the right address? Is it possible the SSRS service itself is on a different machine than the Sharepoint service and the SQL server?
