How is STAF better than compared to Jenkins + plugins in CI, testing and deployment?
Jenkins is able to achieve automated testing and deployment using plugins, then in what situations should one use a framework like STAF?

Maybe I'm wrong, but these two are just two different things. While STAF is
multi-platform, multi-language framework designed around
the idea of reusable components, called services
the Jenkins is
extendable continuous integration server
I assume that you accept their concept to be leveraged to help solve common development problems, such as more frequent product cycles, less preparation time, reduced testing time, more platform choices, more programming language choices, and increased Language requirements.
I think that both can help in these areas since they are a proven and mature technologies, which promote automation and reuse. Also have broad platform and language support, and provides a common infrastructure across teams.
How you'll use them in order to achieve these goals - it's up to you. And why not combine them - JENKINS STAF+STAX Plugin

I need to pass (alert("XSSTest")) this string in all the field to test-penetration testing. even i dont have much idea about this. Presently am doing this entering this text/script manually to each and every field of my web application. Can any one suggest me is there is any tool which can ease this task. I even heard there are many plugin for FF browser available for the same.
You have many options to automate XSS testing.
You can use free and commercial softwares to acheive this. I listed some popular tools below:
Commercial (there may be a trial version)
NetSparker
Acunetix
IBM AppScan
Freeware
Xenotix
BurpSuite
ZedProxy
x5s
Mozilla Firefox AddOn:
XSS Me
Now bear in mind that if you have the source code of the application that you want to test, you may do also static code analysis. This also depends on the technology you are using. Find below some tools for this:
FindBugs
PMD
IBM AppScan (Source)
Of course the lists may continue for many more other tools.

I'd like to avoid using eclipse if I can. Tried googling - nothing came up.
The debuggers of most commercial vendors will provide that functionality, for example Kiel MDK-ARM, IAR EWB, Rowley Associates CrossWorks.
Keil and IAR both provide code-size limited evaluation versions that you can use for non-commercial and evaluation purposes (i.e. you can't sell or distribute a product built using it), Rowley have a 30 day evaluation licence (as does IAR in addition to teh code limited version). For a full licence Rowley is by far the least expensive - largely because they use GCC rather than a proprietary compiler, but the debugger is their own and not based on GDB (and all the better for it!).
If you need free tools, CooCox CoIDE appears to do exactly what you want (and probably more). It is Eclipse based, so may not meet your requirements, but all the integration is already done for you, so it is less of a kit-of-parts than assembling Eclipse with CDT and various other plug-ins. In particular the embedded target debugging is integrated, and that is probably the most difficult part to get information on for Eclipse in my experience.

Please suggest some good tool / software / application for managing test cases for an internet software product. Requirements:
should not be too expensive
should preferably be on an online platform (but desktop app too is okay!)
should support custom fields to classify / categorize test cases according to various dimensions like product module, persona etc.
It can be something that you use(d) in your organization or something you know of.
We are using informUp which is a test case management. we are using it as hosed solution but you can install the server on your site. it is simple but yet powerfull and allow customzied the fields. we are using it for bugs as well but you can use it only for tests cases. we are very satisfied with it

What tools are available for record and play back type testing of an Eclipse RCP application?
I'm hoping for something that the end users will be able to pick up pretty easily and record their user acceptance tests with.
Have a look at this:
http://code.google.com/p/robotframework-eclipselibrary/
Robot framework is one of the easier testing tools for end users to pick up as it nicely separates code from tests.
WindowTester supports testing of SWT and Swing applications. It supports recording actions to Java tests. It was developed by Instantiations, which consistently delivered excellent products for Java development, integrated well within the Eclipse IDE. Google acquired Instantiations this year, and now offers WindowTester as free software.
Squish, by FrogLogic, supports many UI toolkits, including SWT. I toyed with the Qt version a few years back, and liked it. Squish supports recording to scripts that you can then edit, in Python, JavaScript, Perl or Tcl. Scripts are not dependent on screen coordinates. On the downside, Squish is exorbitantly priced, and it's licensed per UI platform.
Some other options are described in this previous question.
A comparision which includes most of the tools mentioned in the other answers (WindowTester, Squish, RCPTT, Jubula) can be found directly on the Eclipse website.
This question is quiet old and the answers outdated. RCPTT is a great if not the best solution to this problem. Free of charge and you are able to record user interactions
Eclipse foundation now has Jubula ptojext. See http://eclipse.org/jubula/ "Jubula"

I need to develop a small Flex application that needs to access a MySQL database. Since I have little experience in server-side Java, PHP programming I would prefer to use a library/framework that allows me to write SQL queries in ActionScript/MXML.
After a bit of research, I have come across two 3rd party libraries, AS3FlexDB(free) and Adobe Flex Connector for MySQL(45$). Initial tests with AS3FlexDB are promising, but I'm a bit afraid that I'll start to work on the project only to find out that I need a full-fledged back-end after all.
Do any of you have experience with these tools? If so, are they stable enough for production? Are there any such libraries for other relational databases(PostgreSQL in particular)?
Thank you!
Lawrence
this and CRUD like this and read this
AS SQL Lib and another one CRUD
and final happiness
Flex is a UI Framework and is not designed for database interaction. I strongly recommend you reconsider the approach and learn a server side language. You'll thank yourself in the long run.
that said, another option is FlexSQL. This is the first time I've heard of the two you mentioned.
I have no idea why people keep building these libraries. It's like trying to use a screwdriver and nails together. It is, in theory possible but better tools exist.
I agree that server-side db interaction is the way to go, but nobody has mentioned the possibility of web services. Use this article to create a number of web services that your flex client can connect to directly.
