I have a problem when I try to process a SSAS project in Visual studio 2013 (sql server 2012) using Pubs data sample of Microsoft. Could anyone tell me how to resolv it? Thanks in advance!
OLE DB error: OLE DB or ODBC error: A network-related or
instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection
to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if
instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow
remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.;
08001; Client unable to establish connection; 08001; Encryption not
supported on the client.; 08001.
Change the Provider in the connection manager to OLE DB.
If that doesn't work, try restarting the SSAS service.
This happened to me today. It took 3 hours of trying everything I could to fix it and I wanted to share it so maybe someone else can be saved those hours. My solution is particular to my problem whereby I'm using impersonation to log into the server with a specific username and password.
In my case I had an SSAS tabular model with a connection to a remote Azure server. I am using Git on Azure DevOps for my source control and I had just moved over to a new development machine on our local network so I updated the remote repo with the latest version of the model, connected to the new dev machine and cloned the repo there. Then I tried to resume my work, but I was getting the same error you were: "OLE DB error: OLE DB or ODBC error: A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible..." blah.
Anyway, I tried resetting the SSAS services, changing the connection provider, rolling back to a previous commit that I knew worked, etc. Nothing worked.
The problem was my impersonation settings!!! I have SSAS_Data_Model credentials created for this project so when I cloned the repo, for some reason the impersonation must not have come through with the password.
So, in Visual Studio, go to Tabular Model Explorer, click on Model -> Data Sources, Edit Connection -> Impersonation... -> and under 'Specific Windows user name and password', you need to re-enter the password for your username. This finally got it working again and I can import tables into my model once more.
Try to test the connection when you provide appropriate server , database , provider. So you will be able to get the connection related problems there itself.

I'm trying to create a SSAS Project and deploy to a remote server.
The Data Source is a Database in the same server, but the project must be made in my laptop.
The remote server is not in a domain environment, so to login in SSAS, I used runas /netonly mothod using Server's Administrator Account, which works fine to connect to SSAS Server through SSMS.
I created SSAS Project using Workspace Server and connection is successful.
I am also able to connect to same Server using SQL Server Database Data Source, using Impersonate Service Account, but after I select the tables I need, the processing fails and gives me this Error:
Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: 'OLE DB or ODBC error: [DataSource.Error] Microsoft SQL: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The wait operation timed out.).
And as result I get all tables without data, just column names.
If I create a project using Integrated Workspace, I am able to get Data from Source, but the same Error occurs when I try to Deploy the Project. The metadata deploys successfully, but all processing fails with the same Error.
I tried to Increase Timeout, but the same thing happens even after waiting 30 minutes.
This process does not fail if I create and execute the project inside the Server.
Enable the TCP/IP in both Server NetWork and Client protocols;
Set TCP port:1433;
And then try it again.

I created a datasource using the wizard, previewed the data, and everything looks good, all of the data is showing up. I attempt to use the fill method on the built in datagrid control, and it times out telling me
message=A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Source=.Net SqlClient Data Provider
How can i preview the data, but then all of the sudden when the application actually starts, i cant access the server at all?
I was compiling and running my project from a mapped network drive, and i tried EVERYTHING i had permissions to try to fix this, including checking all of our production SQL server's settings. i tried every connection client, including linking the table in an access database and trying to connect to the table that way, and nothing. Every other application from access to excel to SSMS to visual studio itself could connect, just not my built application. Then i tried moving my project to my physical drive on a whim and all of the sudden, it had no connection issues.
I need help with SQL server in visual studio. I can't seem to connect my visual studio with internal SQL server. I had created a database with visual studio earlier and it was working fine but now i'm getting an error saying:
The attempt to attach to the database failed with the following
information: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred
while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not
found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct
and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 50 - Local Database Runtime
error occurred. Cannot create an automatic instance. See the Windows
Application event log for error details.
I have tried to create a new database file in a new project but then i get the error:
A network related or instance specific error occurred while
establishing a connection. The server was not found or was not
accessible. (Provider:Named Pipes Provider, error:40- could not open a
connection to SQL server.
I have tried different things but can't seem to get the hang of the problem. I reinstalled visual studio too but that didn't work either. what can i do to get rid of this error and get my database back online?
If you are running Visual Studio on your local machine, you have not any problem with firewalls and enabling of TCP/IP.
Try this four solutions may fix your problem:
SQL Server Express LocalDB add-on, get it from this link.
Make sure that your SQL service is running.
Use SQL Server Authentication.
Make sure you have typed .\sqlexpress in Server name in Add Connection window. You should use a backslash \ as the separator, not a forward slash.
When i am trying to connect to the Azure DB from SQL Management studio an getting teh below error. Not sure why am getting this error as i was able to acess the DB erlier from SQL Management Studio.

I think probably you haven't configure any Azure DB firewall rules to allow your computer's IP to communicate with your Azure DBs.
Simple things to check (not sure what you've tried so humour me here):
You're connected to the outside network.
Instance\Database name, username and password are correct.
Instance and database are online and connectable (Azure servers not down for scheduled maintenance or run out of paid services.)
Firewall rules are incorrect.
Also I think this question here is identical to your question. Try checking that out.
I am using Windows-server-2008 with Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
And there are a lot of questions about this, but nothing on the internet solved it.
The problem is that i can't connect to the my SQL Server 2008 R2 after rebooting my server.
I placed some new memory in my server, and after rebooting my client/server application didn't work anymore because it cannot reach the database.
So i tried to get in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), and tried to loggin with Administrator and another user but both do not work.
When i logg in the following message is displayed:
Cannot connect to (local)
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection
to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance
name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)
I Tried a lot of different things like:
Rebooting server
Try to start the server manually from Sql Server Configuration Manager
Named Pipes - Enabled
TCP/IP - Enabled
Tried to create an new system user or database user as described in the following article: Click Here
Can somebody please help me? I am really confused because i need to get this online. Otherwise i have to reinstall the database server but i do not have a back-up. (is there some folder with a back-up of the settings/tables/columns are stored and can be imported from reinstall?
I was having the exact same problem. net start mssqlserver was giving me the blurb about a failed login attempt. The problem was that I had recently changed the password for the administrator account, and the new password didn't get updated in services.
Here's how I fixed it:
First locate SQL Server from the list here:
Right click and select properties, and navigate to the Log On tab:
Then I typed the new password, and like magic I was able to start SQL Server right through the services manager.
I also did this for any other processes which were marked as "stopped" even though Startup Type was marked as "automatic" (namely, SQL Server Agent).
Is it a named instance or default? Also, is this a local instance? (I see the "(local)" but just wanted to make sure.)
Start the sql server services from services.msc and try to connect
