I am facing problem in registering new sql server instance SQLEXPRESS in SQL Management studio 2008. when I try to connect or test the server error message appear,
I am also facing facing same problem in any new server irrespective of the name, except the main one which was created at the time of installation and which was named same as my user ID in windows..

are you using windows authentication or sql server authentication
if you are using windows authentication then you have to give the sql instance name
which sql provide by default .
if you using sql authentication then u must use the username and password which
you provide during setup

The network path was not found
First of all, your server name regularly is localhost instead of root. Second, from SSMS 16 up, you need additional installation of localhost server. You can read the reference here.
After numerous attempts I tried many versions, I was able to fix this issue by installing the SQL Server 17. I was successfully able to create a server and connect to SQL Server.
I installed Sql Sever Management Express 2012 , but when i try to connect in Sql management studio environment , i have this error .

Sql Server Express 2012
In your Configuration Server Manager there is no instancse of SQL Server so it is normal not been able to connect.
Q: Sine there is no instance,when you Launch Management Studio what instance name do you select when you try to connect???
You should properly install SQL Server Express 2012
EDIT :
First Check if you have any version of SQL Server or SQL Server Express installed on your machine...(this can be done by looking through installed programs from control panel)
In order to Install and configure SQL Express 2008 follow this steps
Take in mind that you have to use SQL Management Studio 2008 later on (if you have 2008 server)

I've just installed SQL Server 2005 Express and I'm trying to login to Management Studio but I don't know what the "Server Name" is to be able to login.
I've tried:
localhost\SQLEXPRESS
127.0.0.1\SQLEXPRESS
SQLEXPRESS
<computer name>\SQLEXPRESS
<username>\SQLEXPRESS
The authentication mode is Windows Authentication.
The error message I'm getting is:
Could not connect to <computer name>\SQLEXPRESS.

Is the SQL Server Express service even up and running??
The local machine can be defined as . or (local) for SQL Server, and the SQL Server Express instance name is SQLExpress by default.
So .\SQLExpress or (local)\SQLExpress ought to work.
If they don't, maybe the service isn't up and running??
I am new to managing servers but I have just been given full access to set up an MS SQL Database on win server 2003. I have created a Database successfully and can connect locally (via remote desktop server)
Problem is I can't connect to the database from my personal computer (remotely, via ms sql server management studio). You need to enable remote tcp/ip connections in sql surface area configuration. It's new in 2005 and then dropped in 2008.
If that doesn't work, you either have a network issue are are perhaps giving the wrong name - maybe you installed a named instance?
I have SQL server 2008 and it was working fine ,but today while starting SQL server I am getting the following error :

In SQL Server Configuration Manager--> sql server services --> MS sql server and all other service status is showing as stopped(previously it was running). I have tried to make it start but the request failed..I have checked the event log ,its showing "The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not start due to a logon failure" ....My SQL server is taking windows authentication and few days back I have changed the PWD ..can it b the reason..pls help.
Note: Its not remote connection..the server is My system only..

In server properties in security, check that server authentication is set to
SQL SErver and Windows Authentication mode.
EDIT: I had similar error after installation of service pack, the install switched the server authentication mode to windows only.
1.Management Studio
2.Object browser should be open in the left hand pane
3.Right click on the server instance name
4.Select properties from the menu choices
5.Server Properties dialog opens
6.Select security on the left hand menu items
7.On the right, there will be server authentication, select 'SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode'
This should allow you to log in as sa, once running and you are in, make changes if required to Logins and Roles
