Deleting localized languages from windows 8 app before publishing it - windows-8

When I upload my app package(.appxupload) in windows Dev Center- windows Store apps, I am asked to provide description for the app in English, Belarusian, and catalan. But I do not want my app to be published in any other language than English. How do i remove Belarusian and Catalan from the description?
I tried making changes to Package.storeAssociation.xml file,by deleting all the languages other than English. But during the packaging of my project it resets back to the original settings.
I have selected only India in markets that i want to sell.
It would be great if someone could help me out with this problem.
Thanks

do you supply additional .resw files for languages besides English? If so you need to delete these .resw files from the project before building the App-Package.
Greetings

You'll have to set your languages in "Package.appxmanifest" file on Solution Explorer. And if you want to only publish your app in English set "Default Language" (Application Tab) setting to "en-US".

Desktop admin panel for web app

I'm building a eCommerce web application for shops using Laravel/Foundation/PostgreSQL, and it will provide them (shop owners) with web based admin panel. My question is, can I make the super admin panel (the tool that I use to control everything) using desktop technology such as VB.net (or anything similar) so the desktop app control the database and maybe some configuration files. Is this considered good way to do things, and do anyone have a similar experience here?
Yes,it's possible to create such application. This kindda application can be called somewhat 'Database Applications'...Let me explain :
1 • You can develop such app in either C#/Vb.NET
2 • Basically, what you need is an app which will let you modify the database(e.g. Product name/Price/Quantity)
3 • For this, you need to first set up a connection between your app and your PostGre database.Take a look at [this)
4 • Then you can use textboxes, checkboxes,Listboxes and other controls you want to edit/delete/update the database . For this, take a look at this for inserting data and this for updating data .They are in c# but can easily be converted to vb.net using converter.telerik.com or simillar conversion tools
I guess that's all you need for now.Leave a comment for further assistance .

How do I find a certain application on the user's PC and transfer data to it? (VB)

I'm developing an app on the Windows desktop so Win7 users have the app, but for Win8 users I'm also developing a Metro app.
My problems are,
if a user opens a file (e.g. "Blue.xyz"), I want an app to come up that asks which environment to open it in, but first it has to find all the apps that can open the file and display them.
Then I need to pass the data as a parameter to the app Chosen.
In the .NET framework 4.5.1, I can't find the System.GetEnvironmentVariable command so I can create a common location for both environments to access. These are my options:
Comment for clarification.
Regarding your 3rd question, the function is there, just now showing on MSDN page:
After having an inspiration, I found some code that can get pretty close to what I want.
Dim filepicker As New Windows.Storage.Pickers.FileOpenPicker
CommonFolder = Windows.Storage.Pickers.PickerLocationId.DocumentsLibrary
I should just be able to tack this on the end after that:
CommonFolder.Replace("\Documents","")
and it should give me "C:\Users\someuser" and then I can add "\MyAppStorage"
Thanks for all the help though! This code isn't very clean, so feel free to edit and make it better!

For iOS Apps, updating with new language treated as new app in that country?

Have anyone had the experience of updating an app with a new language support and know if Apple treats it as a new app for that Country? Say you update with chinese support, would it be shown as a New app? Say in the 'Whats New'.
If not, maybe there is an advantage in releasing an app with as many language as possible?
Thanks
Apple shows apps in "New and Noteworthy" if they have a recent release or update date.
The local iTunes team for your country might feature your app if you updated it to include the local language.
Generally the advantage of localiztion can only be realized if the app has been selling well before. Just adding localization will not save an app that nobody cares about beforehand.

Is there a Windows 8 App directory website (not the one accessible from within Windows 8)?

Is going through the Windows Shop within Windows 8 the only way to know about the apps that are currently available (and if an app idea is already taken)? I've seen Windows 8 app links like this one -
http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/en-in/app/bigflix/cd3aa73b-e60e-44b6-bbe9-6898050a3502
...but going to the root site throws a "403 - Forbidden: Access is denied" and a search for "Windows 8 Store" doesn't provide any useful results. I guess there will be something after the official Windows 8 launch but is there anything else I'm missing? As a developer, I would love to see a summary listing of apps that shows a brief description, its features and Capabilities used.
Unfortunately for us, Microsoft is not providing any such information regarding the Store apps. All we can do is glean a bit from here and there. Zdnet has mentioned the number of apps, for example.
Have a look here and here
This link in particular maybe of some use because it provides estimated app category breakdown.
I created site http://metrostorescanner.com/ to see what's new in apps for all countries (but you can also use country filter).
I found a file with a site map that you may be able to use for a listing of apps:
http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/sitemap/sitemap_1.xml
http://www.greatwindowsapps.com is a searchable directory on the web. It's not the entire Store, the content is filtered to remove poor quality apps. Disclosure: this is my site, so clearly I think that's an advantage :)
http://drunktester.azurewebsites.net/ is the full Store using the Australian content. He published the source code (https://github.com/VikingCode/DrunkStore) so you could set this up for any country if you wished.
Update - It is now possible to search for Windows Store & Windows Phone apps even from non-Windows 8 machines and also view apps by category from the official Microsoft websites.
As #mamata-dalal & #gyurisc have mentioned, there is currently no official Windows 8 app directory.
I came across the website Windows8Apps (though not perfect) that comes close to what I'm looking for.
Currently there is no other place than the Windows 8 Store is the only place, but I am sure soon there will be plenty of sites categorizing these apps.

Set instant messenger display message programmatically

Would a script that sets display messages for instant messengers be simple or complex? After some searching, there doesn't seem to be any information about this at all.
For the sake of an example, if I had a text file of quotations, would it be possible to have the google talk display message change to a different quotation hourly?
Depends on which client you're using. As far as I know, Google's client doesn't offer any interface for plugins, but the open source instant messenger Pidgin does. I think there already is a plugin for what you want to do, but you can write your own using the documentation and examples they give you.
The complexity of writing something like this is based on how much C or Perl you know, since you can program in either of those for Pidgin. Reading code from other people's plugins, you should be able to figure out the Pidgin API.
You can use Kik API to programmatically send rich content and files between mobile applications. It is available for iPhone and Android platforms and takes only about 5 lines of code to integrate into your app. There is more info at the API website: http://www.kik.com/dev
Disclaimer: I'm on of the developers behind Kik API :)
