We sell a subscription to a software program and the data is stored in a SQL server.I want to grab a users expiration date and then display it on joomla. Our server guy said he uses REST. Can anyone help me understand how this data is passed from the SQL table to text on joomla? He also mentioned it has to pass through SSL but I am not certain where that ties in.
I am a complete novice and have no idea where to start when learning this material. Any resources to learn more would be appreciated. Thank you
I'm not going to give you resources, just query google or youtube for that. There are so many out there, it's hard to point you to the right place.
From what you say it appears that your software information is running on a different server than joomla.
You can address this either with a direct connection to the database or by creating a dedicated software that will handle your requests on the "software info" server.
Direct connection
Usually remote access to a db server is disabled, and it's a good security measure. You could however use mysql remote tables and limited accounts and access the remote database directly from a Joomla module or component. This solution is pretty bad because it's dependant on the structure of the remote database.
Writing software
Here your Joomla extension would query a new software which you have to place on the database server. From what you write, the connection should be secure (https / ssl).
How you implement it (using REST, passing parameters with GET etc.) is really not significant, but there may be company standards and REST is nice and easy to understand.
So you would have to http get from your joomla extension:
(REST)
https://info-db-server-ip/license/130
(GET)
https://info-db-server-ip/license/index.php?userid=130
and the script would typically return a json encoded response which contains the license details.

I've currently got a cron job which uses the Twitter search API running every minute, but that limits me to only 100 results per request, I wish to start using the streaming API but worry this will increase the server load further (I'm using shared hosting at the moment and my cron job has already raised a few red flags).
My question is, what's the minimum specs on a server I should get in order to capture the streaming API data sufficiently without any backlog of data?
A design that I've used and have seen others do so as well, is to use a message queue. Load tweets to the stream onto the queue via a thread dedicated to that purpose. Then you can have another thread on the other side of the queue reading tweets and processing as necessary. Here's a nice example of what I'm talking about:
http://www.laurentluce.com/posts/python-twitter-statistics-and-the-2012-french-presidential-election/
Noone can tell you, without sufficient analysis, what your specs should be. The closest answer you'll get, as suggested by one of the comments to your question, is to try it. Generally, do a quick prototype on what you want to do to see what the effect is and measure as necessary. Again, there are many architectural principles in play here, so it isn't even wise for someone to tell you exactly what you should do.

Note: Although this question probably does not fit in with SO's usual programming questions, out of StackOverflow, ServerFault, SuperUser and Programmer's Exchange, only SO has any questions that make mention of this software, which is why I decided to post here.
I used to use Anjlab's open source SQL Profiler tool, and found it to be invaluable. Unfortunately, it looks like the software has been converted to a paid version, with the all access to the open source version completely removed. Since this software is mentioned several times in questions here on SO, I was wondering if anyone still has a copy of the old, free, open source version and would be willing to share it?
I've managed to find the following:
SqlExpressProfiler-1.2.1812.13.zip <-- You have to pay to use the performance dashboard.
SqlExpressProfiler-1.2.1708.7.zip
SqlExpressProfiler-1.2.1708.7.zip
SqlExpressProfiler.1.2.1624.78.zip
SqlExpressProfiler-1.1.1423.75.zip
I'll be testing them out and eliminating the dud ones.
Here is a simple alternative if you need just a monitoring tool for queries:
http://expressprofiler.codeplex.com/
I hope it won't disappear soon.
I'm currently using it with SQL Server Express 2012 to monitor queries form my NHibernate applications (didn't want to add log4net just for this purpose and show_sql outputs only to console window which I don't have in my WCF service).
Really nice and stable utility. I find it much easier to use than MS SQL Profiler which needs various settings, trace profiles for various server versions and what not. Express Profiler - just launch, hit Run, and all the T-SQL and sp_execute queries are displayed.
It's open source, you can add even more features if you wish. I guess, Clear button would be useful because now you have to Stop and Run again to clear the list.
Here's a link. Use at your own risk.
You could also do a search for SqlExpressProfiler-0.1.1094.67.zip

I'm new with Google Web Toolkit and i have some questions about the tool.
First of all, what i have to know to correctly program for GWT? It's ok if i use the GWT Designer to make the GUI?
Second, how i persists all the data i want to store? Use JPA/Hibernate + SQL Database? Or it's better to use AppEngine?
I'm with a great doubt how i get the data from Database to populate fields and tables on client-side.
and Last, i know a bit of Swing, so, GWT is the same? (Except Client - Server concept) ?
That's my questions. Well, thanks in advance.

Ok.

It's your choice. AppEngine has it's limitations. For example, it scales but may not be the best choice for multi-player games if you need data updated very often and quickly. It really depends on your need/design.
If you do go with AppEngine, my experience with JPA was a headache. Objectify is much easier and the way I would go.

I guess they share the concept of using listeners/handlers for events. They are not the same though.

There are good online store building solutions like Shopify, Volution, etc.
I'm looking to build my own small-scale service like that.
Are there any customizable online store building scripts I can install on my own server or companies that offer reselling opportunities?
VirtueMart is another very simple e-commerce app that my clients have used very successfully. It's based on Joomla, but still is an effective and easy tool to deploy.
I'll warn you, there's not a ton of money to be made building e-commerce "services" to resell. There's a million and one people doing it and it takes a LOT of work to get right. Not to mention the heartburn that goes along with payment processors and dealing with fouled transactions, which happens to the best of systems. People don't have a ton of patience when it comes to credit card transactions and I found myself doing tech support at the worst possible times. These are HIGH MAINTENANCE apps if you're not just doing it for yourself...
Magento has a pretty sweet multi-store setup. My company runs a fulfillment house using a single magento install and a store front for each individual client. All our orders are visible under the central dashboard and it's easy enough to create new stores once you get the hang of things.
Check it out here:

Note: Magento has a very steep learning curve, not recommended for beginners.

Anyone knows of a good error log beautifier? (should be able to handle apache error logs).
Should be open source / free, preferably with a web interface
I use http://www.librelogiciel.com/software/ScanErrLog/action_Presentation It runs through the error log producing a summary webpage, or some other formats. While it's best run from a regular cron-job (and it will keep a record of what it's parsed before to save effort), it can also be run as a CGI (though the demo appears to be broken).
You can see a sample report generated using Analog and Report Magic at this address: http://www.reportmagic.org/sample/index.html. The Failure Report is simple, but is a starting point.
I use Webalizer to process my website's logs. Its web-interface might be a bit dated but it's very powerful, reliable and can handle very large logs. It's also quite easy to set up which a big plus in my book as you don't want to be worrying about the software, you just want to visualise the data.
