Is it possible to generate a pdf document that pulls, say, contact information from a web-service and then displays it (and caches it). And if an internet connection is not available it displays the information it has cached.
The use case I'm looking to implement is:
User open a pdf document which connects to a web service and populates certain items (say phone numbers) and displays it to the user
Five days later, with the Internet connection broken, the user re-opens the document. The pdf reader detects it has no internet connectivity and servers up the last good version it has.
Question: Is there a way to do this robustly across pdf readers and if so how?
This is indeed possible by using Adobe Javascript API and embedding your Javascript code in the PDF document using a Javascript-based action (see the Adobe PDF Reference Document for details.)
For connecting to a web service, look at the Javascript for Acrobat API Reference, specifically the part about SOAP (SOAP Properties and Methods, page 657).
About the "caching" feature, I strongly believe that is not going to be possible.
It sounds like you are hoping PDF viewers can take care of client-side functionality for you. This is HIGHLY unlikely. You need to consider other ways to provide such a feature - a client program that fetches the latest PDF if possible otherwise offers it's most recent version is what you are effectively needing. PDF viewers won't provide this automatically.
Can you say more about your environment(s) to see if any other cleaver options are known?

I want to test Microstrategy applications using any web testing tools. I figured out seleniun serves my purpose well. But microstrategy applications are deployed in flash formats. Please help me to guide how to test these flash applications is there any tool available? Can I use selenium only and how to use?
Thanks in advance
Selenium cannot interact with Flash objects.
You can use FlashSelenium, which is quite old but seems to work:
http://code.google.com/p/flash-selenium/
Or use Sikuli, Adobe's 'Genie' library, or Ranorex's library:
http://sourceforge.net/adobe/genie/wiki/Home/
http://www.ranorex.com/product/automated-ui-testing-of-flash-flex-applications.html
http://www.sikuli.org/
There is very limited tools and information for Flash UI Testing.
Another alternative is to interact with it directly using Javascript.
sikuli is a good one for it is based on JAVA so that you can add its jar file in to your build path .. Another one is AUTOIT where it is an 'easy bad' idea which is not recommend but in some case it may (or may not) come handy. As you have to give the co-ordination (x,y) of any element and enter code for it to interact with it like clicking or entering a text..

I would like to know if there are any tool to design a layout of passbook.
I didn't find any in xcode. Experienced designer can read and write a simple json but it is much better if there are any tool help to speed up this design process.
The Pass Designer is available at http://create.passkit.com
You can use it for free to easily design and create Passes that appear in the web interface exactly as they appear in Passbook.
And with a Developer Account you can quickly build your own income stream! Details to be announced soon.
You need to understand the Passbook app, as you are limited to what you can change from Apple.
There is a Session Video called
Session 301 - Introducing Passbook, Part 1
you can see it in a web browser as well.
This will explain you the model and what can you change as types, colors, texts.
If you're only trying to find a PhotoShop file to "play around", give Takahashi Alex it's own Passbook GUI PSD a go.
I'm one of the creator of Passdock, that is exactly what you are looking for. It's a web design tool that let you create a Pass without knowing anything of the JSON structure. It's free and you can also use it to delivery the passes to the devices.
I'll be happy to help you if you have any question.
You can make passbook file via http://passsource.com .
In this site, you can test customization of passbook.

As part of a Project I'm working on I've been instructed to implement Google News API into a Web Application.
However, I've checked the Google News API site, and I see the following message:
Important: The Google News Search API has been officially deprecated
as of May 26, 2011. It will continue to work as per our deprecation
policy, but the number of requests you may make per day may be
limited.
I've checked SO Questions but I've not been able to find a question related to the News API.
What should I use now that Google News API is redundant?
Is it the Custom Search API?
And if so, how can I make this relevant for just
News Results for a particular query for my Web Application?
I've checked the Google News RSS, but this uses HTML in the description which won't work for my requirements as I just need the text.
Depending on your needs, you want to use their section feeds, their search feeds
http://news.google.com/news?q=apple&output=rss
or Bing News Search.
http://www.bing.com/toolbox/bingdeveloper/
I'm running into the same issue with one of my own apps. So far I've found the only non-deprecated way to access Google News data is through their RSS feeds. They have a feed for each section and also a useful search function. However, these are only for noncommercial use.
As for viable alternatives I'll be trying out these two services: Feedzilla, Daylife
Looks like you might have until the end of 2013 before they officially close it down.
http://groups.google.com/group/google-ajax-search-api/browse_thread/thread/6aaa1b3529620610/d70f8eec3684e431?lnk=gst&q=news+api#d70f8eec3684e431
Also, it sounds like they are building a replacement... but it's going to cost you.
I'd say, go to a different service. I think bing has a news API.

Is there an API available for grabbing Google Streetview images at a particular location (and direction)? I see that its possible to get and position the Flash control, but I'd prefer something that just gave me a JPEG (or some other bitmap format).
You're looking for the Static Maps API. Unfortunately, they haven't finished the work on having a static Street View map (The Static Street View API is now available). As comments 4 and 5 indicate, you may be able to get the thumbnail images used for Street View (though you may have to actually have Google load that particular image before being able to grab it and potentially cache it yourself). Other than that, you're stuck with the Flash control.
You may be able to have a service on the backend that essentially takes a screen cap of the Flash control and caches it, but that's a bit hackish.
The static images aren't officially available, but you can grab the tiles and thumbnails using the same API that Google's Streetview flash application uses.
I wrote about the technique here:
http://jamiethompson.co.uk/web/2010/05/15/google-streetview-static-api/
Google now offers a Street View Image API that serves this purpose:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/streetview/
Note that accessing Street View imagery through any means other than documented public APIs (like the Street View Image API and the JavaScript Maps APIs) is not permitted by the Maps API Terms of Service, and could result in requests for that imagery by your site being blocked by Google.
Many thanks,
Thor.
Here is the documentation.
Here is the reference documentation.
Check out the Google samples.
I believe that this example is what you are looking for.
Also, you will need to register for the Google Maps API key.

What is the best wiki engine with good authorization features?
DokuWiki is a great open source PHP Wiki, clean syntax, straightforward install, simple report for read-only and private pages, plus a full ACL system, and a active community of plugin developers.
MediaWiki is amazing from a feature stand point, if you need SVG and MathML support, but I find it too hard to customize and hack on personally.
They use MoinMoin in some subjects at my uni. It has really good authorisation, controlled via simple ACLs at the top of each page. Each student submits work on pages private to them and the subject staff, so it definitely seems to work...
We use atlassian confluence it has authorization features like restricting viewing or editing of pages for groups or users. But it's a commercial product (not free)
Define "good". =)
Some would say that the original wiki script has the best authorization features in a wiki sense of the word, seeing that Ward Cunningham defined Wiki as:
The simplest online database that
could possibly work.
That said, I can share my experience with hosting Mediawiki sites and that is that I often find that I would like to be able to define privileges on a group/page and group/section kind of way. But it always depends on the application. I use UseModWiki for robowiki.net and it works excellently even though it has the most rudimentary authorization system (next after the original wiki script then).
