Is there an API available for grabbing Google Streetview images at a particular location (and direction)? I see that its possible to get and position the Flash control, but I'd prefer something that just gave me a JPEG (or some other bitmap format).
You're looking for the Static Maps API. Unfortunately, they haven't finished the work on having a static Street View map (The Static Street View API is now available). As comments 4 and 5 indicate, you may be able to get the thumbnail images used for Street View (though you may have to actually have Google load that particular image before being able to grab it and potentially cache it yourself). Other than that, you're stuck with the Flash control.
You may be able to have a service on the backend that essentially takes a screen cap of the Flash control and caches it, but that's a bit hackish.
The static images aren't officially available, but you can grab the tiles and thumbnails using the same API that Google's Streetview flash application uses.
I wrote about the technique here:
http://jamiethompson.co.uk/web/2010/05/15/google-streetview-static-api/
Google now offers a Street View Image API that serves this purpose:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/streetview/
Note that accessing Street View imagery through any means other than documented public APIs (like the Street View Image API and the JavaScript Maps APIs) is not permitted by the Maps API Terms of Service, and could result in requests for that imagery by your site being blocked by Google.
Many thanks,
Thor.
Here is the documentation.
Here is the reference documentation.
Check out the Google samples.
I believe that this example is what you are looking for.
Also, you will need to register for the Google Maps API key.

As part of a team, we are building an RoR application completely driven through API's. We already have a web app, its just that we now want to make it completely API driven. We initially kicked off with using RABL Templating Engine for generating the JSON Response. We recently observed that by using JSON Builder as an alternative to RABL, our response times increased by about half a second for an API call in our app that users would hit most often . Before we take a final call on deciding to use JSON Builder for all our API's going forward, I just wanted to know about the pros and cons of using RABL and JSON. Also, it would be nice if one could compare the two templating engines mainly keeping performance in mind wherever feasible.
Sharing any relevant links would also be helpful.
Kindly let me know your experiences with the usage of both these templating engines. Thank you.

Is it possible to generate a pdf document that pulls, say, contact information from a web-service and then displays it (and caches it). And if an internet connection is not available it displays the information it has cached.
The use case I'm looking to implement is:
User open a pdf document which connects to a web service and populates certain items (say phone numbers) and displays it to the user
Five days later, with the Internet connection broken, the user re-opens the document. The pdf reader detects it has no internet connectivity and servers up the last good version it has.
Question: Is there a way to do this robustly across pdf readers and if so how?
This is indeed possible by using Adobe Javascript API and embedding your Javascript code in the PDF document using a Javascript-based action (see the Adobe PDF Reference Document for details.)
For connecting to a web service, look at the Javascript for Acrobat API Reference, specifically the part about SOAP (SOAP Properties and Methods, page 657).
About the "caching" feature, I strongly believe that is not going to be possible.
It sounds like you are hoping PDF viewers can take care of client-side functionality for you. This is HIGHLY unlikely. You need to consider other ways to provide such a feature - a client program that fetches the latest PDF if possible otherwise offers it's most recent version is what you are effectively needing. PDF viewers won't provide this automatically.
Can you say more about your environment(s) to see if any other cleaver options are known?

I would like to know if there are any tool to design a layout of passbook.
I didn't find any in xcode. Experienced designer can read and write a simple json but it is much better if there are any tool help to speed up this design process.
The Pass Designer is available at http://create.passkit.com
You can use it for free to easily design and create Passes that appear in the web interface exactly as they appear in Passbook.
And with a Developer Account you can quickly build your own income stream! Details to be announced soon.
You need to understand the Passbook app, as you are limited to what you can change from Apple.
There is a Session Video called
Session 301 - Introducing Passbook, Part 1
you can see it in a web browser as well.
This will explain you the model and what can you change as types, colors, texts.
If you're only trying to find a PhotoShop file to "play around", give Takahashi Alex it's own Passbook GUI PSD a go.
I'm one of the creator of Passdock, that is exactly what you are looking for. It's a web design tool that let you create a Pass without knowing anything of the JSON structure. It's free and you can also use it to delivery the passes to the devices.
I'll be happy to help you if you have any question.
You can make passbook file via http://passsource.com .
In this site, you can test customization of passbook.

As part of a Project I'm working on I've been instructed to implement Google News API into a Web Application.
However, I've checked the Google News API site, and I see the following message:
Important: The Google News Search API has been officially deprecated
as of May 26, 2011. It will continue to work as per our deprecation
policy, but the number of requests you may make per day may be
limited.
I've checked SO Questions but I've not been able to find a question related to the News API.
What should I use now that Google News API is redundant?
Is it the Custom Search API?
And if so, how can I make this relevant for just
News Results for a particular query for my Web Application?
I've checked the Google News RSS, but this uses HTML in the description which won't work for my requirements as I just need the text.
Depending on your needs, you want to use their section feeds, their search feeds
http://news.google.com/news?q=apple&output=rss
or Bing News Search.
http://www.bing.com/toolbox/bingdeveloper/
I'm running into the same issue with one of my own apps. So far I've found the only non-deprecated way to access Google News data is through their RSS feeds. They have a feed for each section and also a useful search function. However, these are only for noncommercial use.
As for viable alternatives I'll be trying out these two services: Feedzilla, Daylife
Looks like you might have until the end of 2013 before they officially close it down.
http://groups.google.com/group/google-ajax-search-api/browse_thread/thread/6aaa1b3529620610/d70f8eec3684e431?lnk=gst&q=news+api#d70f8eec3684e431
Also, it sounds like they are building a replacement... but it's going to cost you.
I'd say, go to a different service. I think bing has a news API.

i want to play sound according to text of the label.is this possible to generate sound from text.?
It depends on what you mean by "generate sound from text."
If you want to read aloud the text of a label, there's no built-in text-to-speech framework for iPhone developers. Some third-party companies (like Acapela) claim to offer TTS services for iPhone, but I haven't tried them and can't speak for their usability.
If, on the other hand, you just want to play one of a set of predetermined sound files based on the text of the label, that's relatively easy - just determine which file you want to play from the label, then play it with your preferred audio framework. You'll need to include all the files in your project and only determine which one to play at runtime.
If you want to play arbitrary text, check out the Flite text-to-speech library. Flite is simple and is written entirely in C - so you can modify the makefile to build it for the iPhone's ARM processor. It will do basic (but very robotic sounding) text to speech for you. If you hand it more than a few sentences, there is a noticeable pause before it starts speaking - but all and all it's not bad.
Getting this working does require some work, and I would definitely suggest using predefined audio files if possible.
Look at the Accessibility options in 3.0. Otherwise you have to use the libraries mentioned.
