If you are running Windows 8 Release Preview, you need to be running Visual Studio 2012 Release Candidate, which you can download here:

Visual Studio Mac "could not connect to the debugger" error

I am running Mac OS Catalina, and have Visual Studio version 8.3.8 installed. Before installing Catalina I had no problems building and running my code in Visual Studio.
I don't get any errors when building the code, but each time I try to run my code I get the following dialog popup
Could not connect to the debugger
And I get the following in my terminal:
bash: /Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/Versions/6.4.0/bin/mono32:
Bad CPU type in executable
I suspect that Catalina doesn't run 32 bit programs, is there a way around this? I thought that Mono from version 5.2 defaulted to 64 bit.
I ran into this issue while using the following settings:
Windows 10
Visual Studio 2019
Macbook Pro
macOS Big Sure 11.4
Visual Studio for Mac (latest)
XCode 12.5
When trying to debug my Xamarin app for IOS and connect my mac in visual studio I had to follow the following steps.
Install mono - https://www.mono-project.com/docs/about-mono/supported-platforms/macos/
Open Visual Studio for Mac (on mac)
Open XCode (mac)
Connect To mac through Visual Studio
After that I stopped getting the connection error.
I know this isn't your exact question, but maybe it can help someone in the future.
I experienced the same problem when trying to debug practically any app in VS Mac. I am now using 2022 and the same issue persisted since using 2019. If trying to debug your code locally, what you can do is to run your app first without debugging. Then, attach the debugger to the executed process. So, if your web app is executing in let's say, "Chrome", then search for that process, usually, it will be the name of your app (it's a dotnet process), then simply attach the debugger to it. Then, you should be able to set breakpoints and hit them.
Hope this will help anyone working with VS for Mac.

Build Server and Windows 8 / RT Apps

I've a windows 8 app and a windows 2012 Build Server with Jenkins and / or Finalbulder Contiua.
No I can only install Visual Studio for WinRT Apps only on Windows 8 or later.
So this means ,that my build server has to be windows , right
is there a way to compule windows 8 apps on non windows 8 os ?
Is there some kind of "build win 8 sdk" for other os ?
Short answer: no, you'll need Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.
A Jenkins-specific tip: I tried a number of things but did not manage to have it start apps when Jenkins runs as a service. Starting from a logged-in user account was the only way I could get it to work.
Also I'd like to recommend our Apprunner project which we developed to install, run and uninstall packages from within Jenkins.
Finally, if you're working on a Javascript-based app, you can have a look at the unit-testing-related code in our SQLite component which uses Jasmine and outputs JUnit/Jenkins-compatible test result files.

Can't see the tile for my Windows 8 Store App after deploying through Visual Studio 2012?

I am developing a Windows 8 Store app. Till sometime back I could see the Tile of the app once I built and ran the Solution from Visual Studio.
However, very recently Visual Studio 2012 seems to have stopped creating the Tile to launch my application in the dev environment. I have to use Application Search to bring up the App shortcut and launch (outside the debugger).
Only recent change in my environment is the Update 1 installation.
Why has Visual Studio stopped creating the Tile or did I mess something up?
Environment:
Windows 8 Pro (x64)
Visual Studio Express 2012 Update 1
If you have un-pinned it from your start screen, it will be in your All Apps, you need to re-pin it. Most likely you just un-pinned rather than un-install.
Same here but I press Uninstall on my app.
Result :
My app is missing from "All apps".
App also cannot create any new/second icons/tiles.
Any new metro app have same problems
I manage to fix it by deleing folder(s) in (this is not good solution. must be another way to restore App):
"C:\Users\UserNameHere\AppData\Local\Packages\"

Error in Visual Studio 11: "could not obtain license due to error 80090317"

I have been playing around with Windows 8 Developer Preview and Visual Studio 11 Express, but I am facing an issue that is a bit annoying. Every 1 or 2 days, I get the following error when I open Visual Studio: "could not obtain license due to error 80090317"
This issue is mentioned here and here, but in both cases it is said that the issue shows up when Windows 8 is installed as an upgrade to Windows 7, which is not my scenario. I did a clean install in an new partition and installed all the updates available. The workaround I have found so far is to put the date of my system a few months in the past, run Visual Studio and acquire a license, then put the current date back. This works for a while until the message shows up again.
Has someone faced this issue?
Has someone a more permanent workaround for this?
A bit more details on my current setup:
Do not use the Developer Preview.

Update as for June 15, 2012:

Debug C# Metro app on non-networked machine

I'm trying to create my first Metro app, in order to debug it and run it, do I need a developer licence? And if my machine is not connected to the web - what can I do? Nothing?
You can just open Visual Studio 11 Express for Windows 8 or VS 11 Beta and it will get a free license from Microsoft that I believe will be free for a month or so. They have been extending it every month so far. I believe you do need to be online to get it though.
