I try to use the great particle emitter which Michael Daley build for his Particle Designer to be working inside a GLKView. I see two ways to get there:
hack the code from his great (but too old) tutorial to work with iOS5.1 inside a GLKView
pay and use his Particle Designer to add the particle effect to a glkview
I tried 1. the whole day but ended alone and lost in the wide lands of openGL. I don't know how or what is important to initialize from the GL-stuff.
I ported the classes Image, Texture2D, Common and ParticleEmitter and instantiated them inside a GLKViewController, ending with an EXC_BAD_ACCESS in line 341 of ParticleEmitter.m:
// Now that all of the VBOs have been used to configure the vertices, pointer size and color
// use glDrawArrays to draw the points
glDrawArrays(GL_POINTS, 0, particleIndex);
and I don't know why or what....
Now I think about buying the Particle Designer and try to implement it inside the GLKViewController and its GLKView.
Is there any body who could help me with 1./2. to solve my problem, adding an openGL particle emitter to a view based application?
thanx!
edit: removed some stupid code
Looks like this one could help a lot...
;-)
I also created a new question here.

I am currently attempting to create an interactive, informative poster, with regards to Anti-Aliasing techniques and effects. The application is written in Obj-C within Xcode, and makes use of OpenGL and Cocoa functionalities.
I am attempting to create a small animation to display the difficulties of drawing a diagonal line on a pixel grid, however am having real trouble getting my head around the animation aspect.
I am aiming for something with a similar look and feel to this:
I have currently drawn a grid using OpenGL primitives:
,
and would like the effect above to be replicated within my grid, however without the shading yet (that is the next part), so just plain black pixels coloured step by step along the line.
I am new to both OpenGL and Obj-C, so am unsure whether best to implement the animation within OpenGL, or using OSx Core Animation - neither of which I have used before.
The OpenGL drawing takes place within my MyOpenGLView class, with the drawing done in a drawAnObject method, which is then called within the drawRect method.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!
I have some issues about my model. Is is an easy model buy I can not make It work well...
I upload my project here: http://webgl.drapps.info
I have a car model with some pieces that change material when mouse is over them. I use threex.domevent.js library with "on" function. My model is loaded by json files.
Issue 1
when mouse is out of canvas, threejs detects that mouse is over a piece of my model, but this is not true, and that piece change its material (triggering mouseOver event).
Furthermore, I tried to get better mouseover event because even when mouse is really over a piece, that event doesn't trigger.
Issue 2
This is about TrackballControls. Is there any way to control rotation of my world? I mean: rotation only in one axis, rotation only for 180 degrees, etc... Is there any tutorial or article to learn how to rotate and translate camera?
Thanks for everything, I will so please to anybody who wants answer this... because I am a little lost
Thanks
Sorry, but you are out of luck.
Question 1. Yikes! You are using threex.js which is a third-party app that hasn't been updated in almost a year, so I can't help you with that.
You are also using an older version of three.js. Please update to the current version.
If you still have problems, post a new question with a simple demo -- not your entire project. Better yet, Google your question first.
Question 2. TrackballControls is not part of the library -- it is part of the examples -- so it is not officially supported. If you are not happy with it, you will have to hack the code yourself.
This question has come up a lot. Google it. To the best of my knowledge, there is not a good solution.
Personally, I would use OrbitControls in your case -- it keeps the scene right-side-up, and you can constrain the maximum polar angle, keeping the camera "above ground".
The best examples/tutorials are the official three.js examples, which will work with the current version of the library.
I can't help with issue 1.
Issue2:
I am also working on a project to visualize vehicles and needed to be able to rotate. I also tried Trackballcontrolls but it did not suit my needs.
What I ended up doing was creating a a master Object3d and then instead of adding objects/models to the scene, I added them to the master Object3d. That way to rotate everything in the scene, I just had to rotate the master object.
To actually do the rotation I just used the code from one of the cube examples.
I'm working on an iPad application and that's my problem:
I elaborated an algorithm to know if a point is inside a polygon, in an image. So I need when touching the Image, to know the coordinates of the touched point and then do an action using those coordinates (an NSLog to make the example easy), the problem is that I can't use an IBAction on an UIImageView, and so can't recover the point's coordinates. Thanks for any help
I think at first you have to make polygon which fit to your image. And then you can use touchesBegan:withEvent: to get the coordinate of touch point and judge whether the point is inside of polygon or not.
Here is similar question like yours.
How to get particular touch Area?
I think this is a little difficult work, so maybe you would better use cocos2d library which have collision judgement function.
http://box2d.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7487
But also I think iOS is well constructed for handling touch, so this is beneficial effort for you.
So I want to have a view (NSView, NSOpenGLView, something CG related?) which basically displays a map. Such as:
http://dump.tanaris4.com/map.png
Obviously that looks horrible, but I did it using an NSView, and it draws SO slow. Clearly not designed for this.
I just need to allow users to click on the individual (x,y) coordinates to make changes, and zoom into a certain area (to see it better).
Should I go the OpenGL route? And if so - any suggestions as to how to get started? (I was able to follow the guide to draw a triangle, so that's good).
I did find this post on zooming in an NSView: How to implement zoom/scale in a Cocoa AppKit-application
My concern is if I'm drawing over 6000 coordinates and the lines connecting them, this isn't efficient at all.
I don't think using OpenGL would be of any good here. The problem does not seem to be the actual painting, but rather the rendering strategy. You would need a scene graph of some kind to dynamically handle level of detail and culling.
Qt has all this packaged in a nice class class QGraphicsScene (see http://doc.qt.nokia.com/latest/qgraphicsscene.html for reference, and http://doc.qt.nokia.com/main-snapshot/demos-chip.html for an example).
Some basic concepts you should consider using:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scene_graph
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadtree
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_of_detail
Try using core graphics for this, really there is so much that could be done. Watch the video Practical Drawing for iOS Developers from WWDC 2011 and it should give an over view of what can be done with CG.
I believe even CoreGraphics will suffice for what you want to achieve, and that should work under a UIView if you draw the rectangle of your view completely under the DrawRect method of your UIView (you must overload this method). Please see the UIView Class Reference. I have a mobile application that logs points on the UIMapKit, kind of like Nike+, and it certainly works well for massive amounts of points/line segments. There is no reason why this simple approach cannot work for you as well.
This has already been asked at Add a magnifier in cocos2d games
But I didn't quite understand the answer. I am using the same tutorial Let's Spot It is using but I'm not sure where to put madhu's code. I also don't know what the runAction method looks like.
Thanks
Hmm... Cocos2d CCLens3D, makes the area that is set by the programmer to popup.. Please look at the example provided by cocos2d..
the codes:
id lens = [CCLens3D actionWithPosition:ccp(size.width/2,size.height/2) radius:240 grid:ccg(15,10) duration:0.0f];
[self runAction:lens];
self is the layer where your image should be..
ccp(size.width/2, size.height/2) should be changed to ccp(yourPosition.x, yourPosition.y), means the positions which you want the popUp to be at.. Radius is the size of the circle, duration is how long you want it to be, 0.0 meaning infinite.. grid just use the same values..
