I have a tableview with nsfetchedresultscontroller. I would like to setup search with uisearchdisplaycontroller. I would like to separate the search results into a different viewcontroller file. I am able to do that but if i set the contentestcontroller to another controller other then self then the delegate methods work but the tableview doesn't show. I was able to get this setup working by setting uisearchbar delegate to self and pass the serchtext to the other tableview controller but i would like to have it all working in the search tableview controller.
Do i need to make some connections or in general this would not be a good idea?
Here is some code
This is in viewdidload for the maincontroller
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
self.peopleListSearch = [[PeopleListSearchViewController alloc] init];
self.peopleSearchBar.autocorrectionType = UITextAutocorrectionTypeNo;
self.debug = NO;
self.isSearching = NO;
self.peopleSearchBar.delegate = self.peopleListSearch;
self.searchBarController = [[UISearchDisplayController alloc]initWithSearchBar:self.peopleSearchBar contentsController:self.peopleListSearch];
self.searchBarController.searchResultsDelegate = self.peopleListSearch;
self.searchBarController.searchResultsDataSource = self.peopleListSearch;
</code>
This is the main tableview controller which works.
-(void)searchBarSearchButtonClicked:(UISearchBar *)searchBar
{
self.peopleListSearch.searchTerm = searchBar.text;
[self.peopleListSearch performSearch];
[self.searchBarController.searchResultsTableView reloadData];
}
Is there method that is called to show the tableview of the uisearchdisplay controller.
Thanks in advance!

I don't know if what I'm trying to do is possible, but because I haven't the desired results, I guess not.
What I'm trying and need to do is to call a SplitViewController from a previous ViewController, using presentViewController.
I know, SplitViewController have to be the rootViewController, but I need to explore the most possible options to achieve what I need to do.
I have a MainMenu with buttons, and with every button, I need to call a SplitViewController. First, how can do this?
What I'm trying to do is this:
First, in AppDelegate I'm calling the MainMenu, and add as a subview and other things:
-(BOOL)application:(UIApplication*)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions {
[window addSubview:self.mainMenu.view];
[self.mainMenu presentModalViewController:self.firstMenu animated:NO];
[self.window makeKeyAndVisible];
return YES;
}
Then, in the MainMenu, I'm calling SecondViewController, in modal view, using this code:
SecondViewController *secV = [[SecondViewController alloc]initWithNibName:#"SecondViewController" bundle:nil];
secV.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleFlipHorizontal;
[self presentModalViewController:secV animated:YES];
In this SecondViewController, I'm creating SplitViewController, with Master & DetailViewController's, using this code:
-(void)viewDidLoad{
[super viewDidLoad];
// Do any additional setup after loading the view from its nib.
UISplitViewController *splitViewController = [[UISplitViewController alloc]init];
SecondMenuViewController *secMenu = [[SecondMenuViewController alloc]init];
UINavigationController *navLef = [[UINavigationController alloc]init];
[navLef pushViewController:secMenu animated:NO];
SecondMainViewController *secMain = [[SecondMainViewController alloc]init];
UINavigationController *navRig = [[UINavigationController alloc]init];
[navRig pushViewController:secMain animated:NO];
splitViewController.delegate = secMain;
splitViewController.viewControllers = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:navLef, navRig, nil];
MainAppDelegate *mainApp = [[MainAppDelegate alloc]init];
[mainApp changeRootViewController:splitViewController];
navRig = nil;
navLef = nil;
secMain = nil;
secMenu = nil;
splitViewController = nil;
}
As you can see, I'm calling a method in MainAppDelegate, to change view and RootViewController, because SplitViewController have to be RootViewController. This is the method:
-(void)changeRootViewController:(UISplitViewController *)splitViewController{
[self.window addSubview:splitViewController.view];
self.window.rootViewController = splitViewController;
}
I know, this looks like a mess. And when I run, the SplitViewController never shows, so I assume, what I'm trying to do is not possible? Or In what I'm wrong?
If it is everything, what can I do to show a SplitViewController after my MainViewController?
I'm using XCode4.4 and iOS5
Thank you very much
A better way would be to make your UISplitViewController the root view controller in application:didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:. Then present your MainMenu on top of it. You can change the subviews displayed by the split view controller to correspond to what button the user pushes in your MainMenu.
First, didFinishLaunchingWithOptions: is too early to be calling presentModalViewController. You haven't even got an interface yet!
Second, you don't seem to have a root view controller (although perhaps you're getting one from a nib? you should probably stop doing that; use the techniques shown in the current application templates).
Third, note that now that we have custom container views, there is no need for you to use UISplitViewController at all; you can construct your own view / view controller hierarchy, and you might be happier doing so, since UISplitViewController is not a very well-constructed class.
I have an app with a tab bar controller (2 tabs). In one tab view controller, a button leads to an alert window. I want one button of the alert window to call a table view containing possible answers. I want that table view to have a done button and a title. I think that means a navigation controller has to be used. But most everything I can find on navigation controllers assumes a much more complicated situation. Here's part of the alert window logic:
-(void) alertView:(UIAlertView *)alertView clickedButtonAtIndex:(NSInteger)buttonIndex
{
if (buttonIndex == 2) {
AnswersViewController *aVC = [[AnswersViewController alloc] init];
[self presentViewController:aVC
animated:YES
completion:NULL];
}
}
And AnswersViewController looks like this:
#interface AnswersViewController : UITableViewController
#end
#implementation AnswersViewController
- (id) init
{
self = [super initWithStyle:UITableViewStylePlain];
return self;
}
- (id) initWithStyle:(UITableViewStyle)style
{
return [self init];
}
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
[[self view] setBackgroundColor:[UIColor redColor]];
}
#end
This code all works as expected (an empty red UITableView appears).
Two questions I guess: 1. Is there a simple modification to what I have that can give me a done button and title in my table view? 2. If I have to go to a navigation controller (probably), how can I make a bare-bones navigation controller with a done button and title and embed the table view within it? Oh, and I want to do this programatically. And I think I prefer the done button and title to be in the navigation bar, no tool bar desired. Thanks!
To get what you are looking for, you do need to use a UINavigationController. That will provide the UINavigationBar where you can display a title and also buttons.
To implement this with a UINavigationController, you want to do smoothing like this (assuming you are using ARC, so you don't need to worry about memory management):
-(void) alertView:(UIAlertView *)alertView clickedButtonAtIndex:(NSInteger)buttonIndex
{
if (buttonIndex == 2) {
AnswersViewController *aVC = [[AnswersViewController alloc] init];
//Make our done button
//Target is this same class, tapping the button will call dismissAnswersViewController:
aVC.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithBarButtonSystemItem:UIBarButtonSystemItemDone target:self action:#selector(dismissAnswersViewController:)];
//Set the title of the view controller
aVC.title = #"Answers";
UINavigationController *aNavigationController = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:aVC];
[self presentViewController:aNavigationController
animated:YES
completion:NULL];
}
}
Then you would also implement - (void)dismissAnswersViewController:(id)sender in the same class as the UIAlertView delegate method (based on the implementation I have here).
Hope this helps!
recently I started using storyboard and I've the following situation: I want to set the text of an UILabel from the AppDelegate. So I created an instance of my ViewController
UIStoryboard *mainStoryboard = [UIStoryboard storyboardWithName:#"MainStoryboard"
bundle: nil];
ViewController *controller = (ViewController*)[mainStoryboard
instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier: #"mainViewController"];
myViewController = controller;
[window addSubview:myViewController.view];
[window makeKeyAndVisible];
and called the following method from the delegate
- (void) updateParameterLabel:(NSString *)parameter {
NSLog(#"URL-2: %#", parameter);
parameterLabel.text = parameter;
}
But the parameter is not shown in the UI.
Another think, which is kind of strage:
- (void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated
{
[super viewDidAppear:animated];
NSLog(#"View did Appear");
}
The "View did appear" is logged twice ...
Any hints?
Regards,
Sascha
Setting the text of a UILabel from your application delegate isn't great design. Your view controllers should be managing the content of your views, hence their name. Typically your storyboard is instantiated automatically, and you don't need any of the storyboardWithName et code you've got, assuming you're working with Apple's default templates.
Maybe think about re-architecting your application to follow the 'model-view-controller' pattern more strictly, and also look at how Apple instantiate storyboards automatically (just create a new storyboard project in XCode to see this).
If you still want to make it work, make the UILabel a property of your viewcontroller and set the label by using
In delegate :
- (void) updateParameterLabel:(NSString *)parameter {
NSLog(#"URL-2: %#", parameter);
[myViewController updateParemeter:parameter];
}
In myViewController:
- (void) updateParameterLabel:(NSString *)parameter {
NSLog(#"URL-2: %#", parameter);
parameterLabel.text = parameter;
[self.view setNeedsDisplay];//edit
}
So use the viewController to update your label. Of course you need the label as a property in your viewController
For what I see you are trying to update the label before it appears, so why don't you try calling your updateLabel method in the viewWillAppear, it would be something like this
-(void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated{
[self updateParameterLabel:#"Some Text"];
[super viewWillAppear:YES];
}
And updateParameterLabel has to be implemented in the viewController.
I have a file (.m) wich is counting the clicks on a button
counter=counter +1;
count.text = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"%i",counter];
After a NSTimer a new screen appears (a new .m / .h / .xib file) but i want the score (clicks on button) in a label on the new screen.
On the first screen header file i'm doing:
IBOutlet UILabel *count;
but after the NStimer countdown i want to display to score on the new screen (screen 2)
Does anyone know how i can do this?
Need some more information? Please ask me!
In your randomMainVoid: action set the property of the label before you push the second view.
I don't know the name of your secondViewController and what you named the label in the secondViewController, so I can't give you exact code here.
Can you tell me what those names are and I will post the code here for you.
You should always name your ViewControllers with a Capital letter like Score, not score. But in either case:
Score *scoreView = [[Score alloc]initWithNibName:#"Score" bundle:nil];
[scoreView.count setText:count.text]; //Replace this with the text you want to pass
[self presentModalViewController:scoreView animated:YES];
Or if your using a NavigationController you could push the view onto the stack:
[self.navigationController pushViewController:scoreView animated:YES];
So, how are you initializing your timer? I assume you are using something like...
timerWithTimeInterval:target:selector:userInfo:repeats:
This method takes a selector, which is called when the timer expires/fires. In this method you should be displaying your view and you can pass the count to the new view you are creating. When your view loads you can set the count to a label on the view.
Just give your second view controller an initializer like:
- (id)initWithScoreText:(NSString*)scoreText {
if ((self = [super initWithNibName:#"MyNibName" bundle:nil])) {
scoreLabelText = [scoreText copy];
}
return self;
}
- (void)viewDidLoad {
[super viewDidLoad];
//set the text of the label
scoreLabel.text = scoreLabelText;
}
- (void) dealloc {
//release the string since we copied it
[scoreLabelText release];
[super dealloc];
}
Then in your first view controller, you would do something like:
SecondViewController* newController = [[[SecondViewController alloc] initWithScoreText:count.text] autorelease];
[self.navigationController pushViewController:newController animated:YES];
Edit: updated based on feedback from Paul.s.
I'm new to using the split view for creating iPad applications. When I first create the project just using the standard MasterDetail Application template (Xcode 4.2), it creates a MasterViewController and a DetailViewController. The template has the following method that is called when a row is selected from the popover table (master detail view controller):
- (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath
if (!self.detailViewController)
{
self.detailViewController = [[DetailViewController alloc] initWithNibName:#"DetailViewController" bundle:nil];
}
[self.navigationController pushViewController:self.detailViewController animated:YES];
Now I understand when you are using a regular navigation controller if you are programing for an iPhone you just do this type of thing to push on another view controller on to the stack. However, with this template, it just pushes the detail view onto the popover rather than updating what is already present. I'm confused as what I need to update to select something from the pop over (master detail view), and then have the detailView update.
Update:
To try and test out the "detailItem" that is already setup for you in the DetailViewController, I commented out the pushViewController and added the following:
//[self.navigationController pushViewController:self.detailViewController animated:YES];
self.detailViewController.detailItem = #"Test";
// setter in detailViewController
- (void)setDetailItem:(id)newDetailItem
{
if (_detailItem != newDetailItem) {
_detailItem = newDetailItem;
// Update the view.
[self configureView];
}
if (self.masterPopoverController != nil) {
[self.masterPopoverController dismissPopoverAnimated:YES];
}
}
- (void)configureView
{
// Update the user interface for the detail item.
// detailDescriptionLabel.text is a IBOutlet to the label on the detailView
if (self.detailItem) {
self.detailDescriptionLabel.text = [self.detailItem description];
}
}
According to this code, the text of the label on the detailViewController should be updated. However, when I do click on the item in the master view controller table, nothing happens.
There are a couple different ways you could do it. First off, like you said, remove the pushViewController call (I don't know why Apple's template does this... maybe just to show you you can?).
Next, let your MasterViewController know about the DetailViewController that is already displayed. I usually set master.detailViewController = detailViewController in the appDelegate.
Remember, the DetailViewController is already being displayed, so you won't always need to realloc it (unless you are replacing it with some other view)
First Option
Use delegate calls to set the information. Declare a protocol to pass information to the detailView and have it display it appropriately. Here is a tutorial describing this in more detail.
Second Option
Pass DetailViewController some data & override the setter to refresh the detailView. Here is a tutorial describing this in more detail.
// in DetailViewController
- (void)setDetailItem:(id)newDetailItem {
if (detailItem != newDetailItem) {
[detailItem release];
detailItem = [newDetailItem retain];
// Update the view.
navigationBar.topItem.title = detailItem;
NSString * imageName = [NSString stringWithFormat:#"%#.png",detailItem];
[self.fruitImageView setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:imageName]];
}
}
Edit: Just looked at the template again, and setDetailItem type code is already in there, but the code is creating a completely new detailView so the detailView that is viewable on the splitViewController is not changed at all.
