I've got a logger set up in my application using BufferedLogger. I'm able to write logs from my rspec tests and from my rake tasks, but for some reason when I log from my application nothing happens. It was working a week or so ago, but lately the file just won't update. I put a debugger on my main page and tried this:
(rdb:3) logger
#<ActiveSupport::BufferedLogger:0xa142b34 #level=0, #buffer={},
#auto_flushing=1, #guard=#<Mutex:0xa142a1c>,
#log=#<File:/mnt/hgfs/proj/log/development.log>>
(rdb:3) logger.debug "Hellooo??"
"Hellooo??\n"
(rdb:3) logger.error "Hellooo??"
"Hellooo??\n"
(rdb:3) logger.flush

When I opened the file it was empty. I guessed that it was a file permissions issue but it looks fine:
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2012-02-15 15:47 development.log*
I thought that it might be because I was using the itslog gem, so I removed that from my gemfile but that didn't do anything.
What should I check next?
No answers yet, so here's what fixed it: restarting the VM. Not sure what was going on that was stopping logging but apparently restarting the VM fixed it.

I work still view month on a project with RapidClipse 4.0
I deployed on the production server several versions of the project war files. Everything worked fine.
After the last deployment I got a blank screen after loading the application URL
For the server I use a docker container with following setting:
Apache Tomcat/8.5.43, JVM: 1.8.0_222-b10, 3.10.105, amd64
My first thought was: "ok you did something wrong in your code.. turn back and every thing is fine.... :-((
It wasn't !!
I used several versions which runs fine befor.
I stopped the application, redeployed it and deleted it.
Then I deployed an older version....and once again a version older..a.s.o
Non of the versions which worked fine befor did work again.
I got every time the same result: after loading the application a blank white screen.
So far so bad:
I tried to look into ../conf/server.xml if deployment parameter is set correctly:
<Host name="localhost" appBase="webapps"
unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true">
looked fine!
I enhanced the cache by:
$CATALINA_BASE/conf/context.xml added following code:
<Resources cachingAllowed="true" cacheMaxSize="100000" />
also without success.
I tried to look in catalina.out: There is still nothing helpfull:
14-Aug-2019 20:29:21.087 INFO [http-nio-8080-exec-6] org.apache.catalina.startup.HostConfig.deployWAR Deploying web application archive [/usr/local/tomcat/webapps/RC_07.war]
14-Aug-2019 20:29:31.190 INFO [http-nio-8080-exec-6] org.apache.catalina.startup.HostConfig.deployWAR Deployment of web application archive [/usr/local/tomcat/webapps/RC_07.war] has finished in [10,102] ms
after debug in browser I got following:
257ms Processing time was 134ms
257msReferenced paintables: 6
283msEstablishing push connection
300msCould not load theme from http://myIP:8888/RC_07/VAADIN/themes//styles.css?v=7.7.13
310msPush connection established using long-polling
I searched also in the history of the docker container an found that this problem (300ms....) still persists from beginning, over all versions I deployed before.
Out of this, I assume, that this could not be the reason, too.
Or am I wrong?
I searched around this VAADIN Problem and found a lot, but I was not able to solve it. The styles.css file are still in place on the server.
I am wondering on ..../VAADIN/themes//styles.css...
the double slash in error message.
But in my code I couldn't find similar.
Also the buildpath in eclipse includes the folder structure like expected.
Now I am at the end!
I am confused, how I should go ahead to figure out the reason for this behavior, or much better to fix it.
Any idea/ help would be welcome!!
Thank you in advance

After long research, togehter with RapidClipse support we found the solution.
I had two issues:
1) unknown how, we assume, that there was an error in the MainUI xml file.
After resetting with and high of view and layout, and turning back to setting before,
the page elements were visible again in design view.
2) there is a parameter for the theme under MainUI properties - misc -
This parameter was set, but without content. This results in a code line: this.setTheme("");
After resetting this, a deployment was possible like before.
Everything is fine now.
Thanks again to RapidClipse support.
I'm working on a RoR app with Devise. When I came in to work today and tried to start up my local dev environment, RoR failed when I tried to go to the sign in page:
NameError at /users/sign_in
undefined local variable or method `require_no_authentication' for #<SessionsController:0x########>
It looks like the error is not being raised within the code we wrote, but instead from deep within the Devise gem. I'm guessing that somehow, my dev machine isn't configured right.
Here are some things I've tried to fix the bug:
I ran rake db:migrate and rake db:terraform.
I ran bundle install.
I ran rvm gemset empty and bundle install to reinstall all of my gems.
None of these worked.
In addition, here are a couple more strange things about this error:
None of the other devs at my workplace are having the same error, even though they're on the same codebase.
After trying to figure out the error for a while, I switched to a branch that I haven't updated since before I started getting this bug. Even though it was working before the weekend, that branch now fails with the same error.
Does anybody know anything I could do to try to fix this error? Does it sound like some part of my local configuration is incorrectly set up?
In my project, I had added a file in app/controllers called devise_controller.rb. It looked like this:
class DeviseController < ApplicationController
# Asks Devise how much time is left until the current user is
# automatically logged out, without resetting the logout timer.
def time_until_logout
raise "let's inspect here"
end
end
When I deleted this file, the bug went away.
I filed a bug report about how adding a DeviseController caused RoR/Devise to blow up on Devise's repository: https://github.com/plataformatec/devise/issues/2520
trouble running, cleaning or playing, starting play2.1 app. I can create the app, but then if i try to run, clean, play or start. i get this error
exception when typing play.Project.jdbc
class file needed by PlayReloader is missing.
any thoughts would be appreciated..
turned out to be a permissions issue. the app had lost its executable permission. no clue how it happened
I've moved a Rails 3.2.5 app from Heroku to a VPS and while the app was working beautifully on Heroku in terms of the log drain output, unfortunately all log output on the VPS and even running locally lacks timestamps or any other tags I'd like to prepend.
After attempting to create a fresh test app and including the following one of the config/envrionments or config/application.rb I've found that it prepends the indicated tags:
config.log_tags = [:uuid, :remote_ip, lambda { |req| Time.now }]
Notwithstanding, I've tried everything I can think of so far from combing through the app gems to grepping everything for any occurrence of "log" within the config and lib folders and subfolders (such as initializers).
I don't know, if somehow the Rails logger may be disabled, how can I find this out? Or what else could be going on here? Or what should I look for precisely?... Or should I attempt to force Rails logger and, if so, where & what should I insert Rails logger reset code to find out in an attempt to isolate where during system init the problem is occurring?
I had the same issue, you probably need to use ActiveSupport::TaggedLogging.
config.logger = ActiveSupport::TaggedLogging.new(Logger.new($stdout))
This question was asked before here, but can't say that the answer helps me. I am using Rails 3.1.3. When I run rails console on my local dev machine, I get the following message:
no such file to load -- map_by_method
The message doesn't prevent the irb session from launching, so it's benign. But I'd like to get rid of it. At one point in time I had the map_by_method gem installed, but I removed it from the Gemfile and gemset -- yet the message still appears. Any idea how to vanquish it?
there might be some causes for this:
there might be some other gem which has it as a dependency
you might have a require 'map_by_method' in your code
you might have a require in your .irbrc
the .irbrc can be located in your user home or in the current working directory.
have a look at an example .irbrc here: http://matthewhutchinson.net/2010/9/19/rails-3-bash-aliases-and-irbrc-configs
Probably the gem map_by_method has done some permanent changes on your system. Try re-installing it. It should fixed your problem. Same thing happened to me once. If it doesn't, try specifying it in development section of gemfile.
