I am making an extension for Chrome as a browser action. I need to know if there is any way to have some functions executed while installing the app. All of the pages that I have seen like "background" and "popup" execute everytime. I need to configure the extension and then use these parameters further in my extension.
Is there a way to do so or I will have to put a check everytime the browser starts.
Best practice is to use a background page and localStorage. Each time the background page starts check if localStorage.getItem('installed') === 'true' to see if it is a new istall or not.
Background pages start when Chrome starts vs browser action popups that start every time a user clicks the button.

I was wondering if there is anything in Selenium that can verify if a page loaded completely without relying on a specific element in the page to appear (while using the "wait until page contains" or similar keywords).
The idea is reusability. If there is a need to add new websites to the robot automation later, I do not want to rely on a specific element that might exist in one page but not in another to verify if the page loaded fully.
Is there any keyword that addresses that in Robot Framework - Selenium Library?

Edit - I am aware that some AJAX requests are impossible or extremely difficult to conclude if they finished or not (or if they just keep going forever) so let's assume the website does not have any of that.
Once the page is finished loading, all requests are done.
driver.execute_script("return document.readyState === 'complete'")
use execute script document.readyState , if it returns complete it means the loading have finiished.
But if there is no ajax you don't have to do it selenium does it automatically so your question won't be valid:

By default normal is set to browser if none is provided.
I couldn't find some built-in option but there is another way to achieve this. Check if your web app uses any third-party library which shows progress bar, if yes then probably there is function which returns the status of page loading including Ajax call. If not, then you can ask devs to add some progress bar, for instance Pace.JS
document.readyState does not wait for Ajax calls, personally I found it less helpful.
I want to write an automated test with Selenium using Chromedriver and Behat.
This scenario in question should go to a page, register a user, logout and register another user.
Now the problem is, on the website in question, after registration you get an annoying overlay, so that the logout button is not reachable anymore. I can either make the test fill out the overlay and complete it properly, which will take much more effort, or try to logout some other way.
My idea was to simply go to the domain again with /?event=logout added which normally works to log out the current user. However when I do this in the automation it fails, apparently because of a bad http response code.
Is it not possible to use a url like this with Selenium? Anyone have an idea?
You can achieve this with Selenium using a site that makes GET requests. So you can go to URL http://requestmaker.com/, fill the www.website.com in the Request URL, and 'event=logout' in the Request data, then click "Submit".
It's a bit hacky, so I would prefer using a GET request directly in the code, depending on your programming language... Something like so:

Some options would be:
Navigate to URL to logout and try to hide the modal via jQuery/javascript
After registration navigate to homepage and see if the modal is there and if you can logout as you should
Clear session and navigate to the page you need

Is there some specific way to test ajax based web application using webdriver?
Yes you should be careful when you write tests for pages that use JavaScript/Ajax heavily.
Main point in such case is to use wait condition each time you do something and result is not available instantly or via page change. When you need to add a wait condition examine behavior of the page and try to find some event that is a sign for you that operation is completed (attribute change, new element appears or disappears and so on).
I have a button that executes an Ajax request and then it successfully redirects to another page.
How do I assert that the redirected page was successfully reached?

you can use verifyTextPresent command to verify a unique lable or text in the redirected page.by that way you can fix you have successfully reached the redirected page.

Target : some unique text in the redirected page.
i think your problem can be fixed by this.
IDE has many assert commands. You can use any of the one and you can achieve the test scope(here the page is navigated or not).
Example:
command : assertTitle
Target : check the title of the page.
In the above he used verifyTextPresent it will check weather the text is present or not in the page and it will continue the next step. If you use assert commands it will proceed the next step when the assert step is passed. Otherwise it fails.
One thing you keep in mind, selenium won't wait for Ajax kind of loading, it will wait for the Page loading. So, you have to put Wait commands explicitly to finish the Ajax loading.

A user logs into my application in a tab in a browser
They get an email and click a link which opens a new tab in the same browser and logs them in under a different email say.
If they go back to the first tab they are no longer the same user and I want the page to automatically detect this and then reload or redirect them if they are unauthorized to view the page.
Anyway to do this?

JavaScript is pretty much the only way to make pages do stuff after they're loaded. Note that in pretty much any user authentication system, a given browser will only be logged in as one user at a time, so as soon as the second tab opens, that browser will be acting as the second user - they can still see the current content of the first tab, but links (for instance) will no longer work unless the second user was also authorized to use them.
There are some JQuery plugins that do this sort of thing, like PeriodicalUpdater, or you can write your own (an example).
