Like in stackoverflow, I would like that if a user begins to enter text (lets say a lot of text) and נט accident closes the window (or goes back in the browser) when the user returns the unfinished text will be saved and displayed in that text box.
this without submitting.
Do I need to keep it in session[] or something similar?
Is it even possible doing it elegantly or do I need complex infrastructure to support it?

You can't do this with a submit. You could do a silent ajax/jquery submittal to store the information. You could store it anywhere but it would depend on its sensitivity. A cookie generally works.

Having a bit of a problem doing this and not sure of it can be done. I have an edit control that a user types into, I would like for the input to be all in capital letters. I tried having a custom action on the edit control to get the property, convert to capital letters and set the property again each time a letter is set but it does not work. I guessed it wouldn't but no harm in trying..:)
Has anyone else solved this? I would like to do it without having a button to press if possible. The dialog in question is a twin dialog if that helps at all.

It's not possible using the native built-in Windows Installer UI. The underlying MaskedEdit Control is primitive. There are no events to tie into to validate and modify as the characters are entered. You can only ToUpper() the property when the user clicks Back or Next.
The alternative would be to go with an external UI handler which is a lot of learning and work.
I am making an app for companies so they can make a workreport in a blink of an eye by just tapping some togglebuttons and typing some text and the app makes a nicely laid out email and sends it to an Email address

I know I need to use the isolated storage but I don't really know how to put it in VB so it can change the content of the things needed to be changed.
You can take a look at using My.Settings see this Microsoft Article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms379611(VS.80).aspx once you save the settings from a form text box or other method of input, you can read the settings back on on form load and change the appearance of you application based on the user settings.
I want to create a program to fetch information from a website (that's fine). However, you need to be logged in to get this information.
I just want two simple textbox controls that I would type my username and password into and hit submit and the information would be returned to me so I can use it. (I don't want to use a webbrowser control)

you can pass credentials into a HttpWebRequest object.
You could use a webbrowser control since it is easy, and just set its display to not visible - the user would never see anything. You could still interact with the page just like normal. You could use the same control to log yourself out by clicking on the logout button. You would set everything up and test it with visible=true, and when it all works, set visible to false.
I'm fairly new to Xcode and Cocoa/Objective-C and I'm trying to implement something as simple as a QInputDialog that can be re-used throughout the program - with a unique message to the user each time it is launched and return a string as a result.
I have searched the web and found multiple methods but nothing seems to be quite clear or concise - well enough for me to understand anyway.
Is there anything out there as simple as:
Create/Launch a window from a method with a new message label to the user in the form of a string.
Has an NSTextField to receive the users input.
Close the window and return the string from the text field (if accepted) to the calling method.

Modal prompts for input are very un-Mac-like. It's like smashing the user's face in with a cricket bat and yelling “TELL ME THE ANSWER NOW!”
The correct solution is to put your text field into a non-modal window, so that the value is already ready when the user invokes whatever action needs the value. Beep and show the “hey, you forgot this” icon if the user hasn't filled in the field and you need a value there. If the field is not relevant in the window the user starts the action from, or if you're going to need several facts as input, then show another window, non-modally, with its own window controller, to take in all the input you'll need for the action.
A separate, non-modal window will also enable the user to fill out and/or perform multiple such actions in parallel.
If you must demand the value with a modal dialog, you can and should make it a sheet, but you'll still need to build the panel and its contents from scratch in IB or code.

I'm writing an intranet ASP.NET page using VB.NET. I've run into a particularly nasty problem dealing with handling file uploads. I'll do my best to explain the problem, and perhaps someone can help.
My problem is almost a duplicate of this one, or this one, except (other than the filename) I don't care about sending the file to the server until the other data has been reviewed.
Here's the situation:
Joe Q. Dataentry inputs some data into several fields. The first 3 are drop down, and when he changes the selection, a postback event is fired that queries a database for valid entries for the other drop down selections. After selecting the values, he inputs some other data, chooses a file to accompany the data and clicks the "Update" button. When he hits the button, it fires a postback event that sends the current data to the server to be validated. The data will create a change in the database, so he is presented with a view of the current state, and what it will look like when his changes are made. He can now either confirm or cancel the operation for whatever reason.
Part of the data he will see involves the extension of the file which may be a PDF, or could also be some image file or other document.
Now here's where my problem is - on each postback event, the fileupload dialog is cleared. I was getting around it by creating a temporary file on the first postback and then renaming if he clicks OK or deleting on Cancel... but I need to do a variety of things, based on the previous state of data and the filename. I've tried to keep some session variables to retain the filename, and that works OK for just renaming the file, but for what I need to do it gets unwieldy.
What I want to do is be able to have the postback event to present the changes, and then when the user clicks "OK", submit the file. Is there any possible way to do that?
One of my thoughts was to do some of the validation client-side (I'm already re-validating server side so I'm not too worried about data security there), but I don't know how I could get the information from the database query.

It appears that what I want to do is prevent a certain button from firing a full postback. Is there any way to do that?

I have an update panel on the page already - is there any way for the button to only post what's in the update panel?
What you might want to do is place your drop-downs inside of an ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel, and keep your file upload control out of that.
Your update panel will do the post backs and allow your validation logic to happen without submitting the file, then when you hit your final "Save" button (which is also outside of your UpdatePanel) the entire form will be submitted back and you can work with your file then.
