Using each line of awk output as grep pattern - awk

I want to find every line of a file that contains any of the strings held in a column of a different file.
I have tried
grep "$(awk '{ print $1 }' file1.txt)" file2.txt
but that just outputs file2.txt in its entirety.
I know I've done this before with a pattern I found on this site, but I can't find that question anymore.

I see in the OP's comment that maybe the question is no longer a question. However, the following slight modification will handle the blank line situation. Just add a check to make sure the line has at least one field:
grep "$(awk '{if (NF > 0) print $1}' file1)" file2
And if the file with the patterns is simply a set of patterns per line, then a much simpler version of it is:
grep -f file1 file2
That causes grep to use the lines in file1 as the patterns.

THere is no need to use grep when you have awk
awk 'FNR==NR&&NF{a[$0];next}($1 in a)' file2 file1

$(awk '{ print $1 }' file1.txt) | grep text > file.txt

awk command to print columns with colum data

cat file1.txt | awk -F '{print $1 "|~|" $2 "|~|" $3}' > file2.txt
I am using above command to filter first three columns from file1 and put into file.
But only getting the column names and not the column data.
How to do that?
|~| - is the delimiter.
file1.txt has values as :
a|~|b|~|c|~|d|~|e
1|~|2|~|3|~|4|~|5
11|~|22|~|33|~|44|~|55
111|~|222|~|333|~|444|~|555
my expedted output is :
a|~|b|~|c
1|~|2|~|3
11|~|22|~|33
111|~|222|~|333
With your shown samples, please try following awk code. You need to set field separator to |~| and remove starting space from lines, then print the lines.
awk -F'\\|~\\|' -v OFS='|~|' '{sub(/^[[:blank:]]+/,"");print $1,$2,$3}' Input_file
In case you want to keep spaces(which was in initial post before edit) then try following:
awk -F'\\|~\\|' -v OFS='|~|' '{print $1,$2,$3}' Input_file
NOTE: Had a chat with user in room and got to know why this code was not working for user because of gunzip -c file was being used wrongly, its output was being saved into a variable on which user was running awk program, so correcting that command generated right file and awk program ran fine on it. Adding this as a reference for future readers.
One approach would be:
awk -v FS="," -v OFS="|~|" '{gsub(/[|][~][|]/,","); sub(/^\s*/,""); print $1,$2,$3}' file1.txt
The approach simply replaces all "|~|" with a "," setting the output file separator to "|~|". All leading whitespace is trimmed with sub().
Example Use/Output
With your data in file1.txt, you would have:
$ awk -v FS="," -v OFS="|~|" '{gsub(/[|][~][|]/,","); sub(/^\s*/,""); print $1,$2,$3}' file1.txt
a|~|b|~|c
1|~|2|~|3
11|~|22|~|33
111|~|222|~|333
Let me know if this is what you intended. You can simply redirect, e.g. > file2.txt to write to the second file.
For such cases, my bash+awk script rcut comes in handy:
rcut -Fd'|~|' -f-3 ip.txt
The -F option enables fixed string input delimiter (which is given using the -d option). And by default, the output field separator will also be same as -d when -F is active. -f-3 is similar to cut syntax to specify first three fields.
For better speed, use hck command:
hck -Ld'|~|' -D'|~|' -f-3 ip.txt
Here, -L enables literal field separator and -D specifies output field separator.
Another benefit is that hck supports -z option to automatically handle common compressed formats based on filename extension (adding this since OP had an issue with compressed input).
Another way:
sed 's/|~|/\t/g' file1.txt | awk '{print $1"|~|"$2"|~|"$3}' > file2.txt
First replace the |~| delimiter, and use the default awk separator, then print columns what you need.

Why does awk not filter the first column in the first line of my files?

I've got a file with following records:
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_15102018.txt;1;CAB001
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_20102018.txt;2;CLI001
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_20102018.txt;32;CLI001
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_25102018.txt;1;CAB001
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_50102018.txt;1;CAB001
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_65102018.txt;1;CAB001
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_80102018.txt;2;CLI001
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_93102018.txt;2;CLI001
When I execute following oneliner awk:
cat lignes_en_erreur.txt | awk 'FS=";"{ if(NR==1){print $1}}END {}'
the output is not the expected:
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_15102018.txt;1;CAB001
While I am suppose get only the frist column:
If I run it through all the records:
cat lignes_en_erreur.txt | awk 'FS=";"{ if(NR>0){print $1}}END {}'
then it will start filtering only after the second line and I get the following output:
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_15102018.txt;1;CAB001
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_20102018.txt
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_20102018.txt
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_25102018.txt
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_50102018.txt
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_65102018.txt
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_80102018.txt
depots/import/HDN1YYAA_93102018.txt
Does anybody knows why awk is skiping the first line only.
I tried deleting first record but the behaviour is the same, it will skip the first line.
First, it should be
awk 'BEGIN{FS=";"}{ if(NR==1){print $1}}END {}' filename
You can omit the END block if it is empty:
awk 'BEGIN{FS=";"}{ if(NR==1){print $1}}' filename
You can use the -F command line argument to set the field delimiter:
awk -F';' '{if(NR==1){print $1}}' filename
Furthermore, awk programs consist of a sequence of CONDITION [{ACTIONS}] elements, you can omit the if:
awk -F';' 'NR==1 {print $1}' filename
You need to specify delimiter in either BEGIN block or as a command-line option:
awk 'BEGIN{FS=";"}{ if(NR==1){print $1}}'
awk -F ';' '{ if(NR==1){print $1}}'
cut might be better suited here, for all lines
$ cut -d';' -f1 file
to skip the first line
$ sed 1d file | cut -d';' -f1
to get the first line only
$ sed 1q file | cut -d';' -f1
however at this point it's better to switch to awk
if you have a large file and only interested in the first line, it's better to exit early
$ awk -F';' '{print $1; exit}' file

Removing content of a column based on number of occurences

I have a file (; seperated) with data like this
111111121;000-000.1;000-000.2
111111211;000-000.1;000-000.2
111112111;000-000.1;000-000.2

112111111;000-000.1;000-000.2
121111112;000-000.2;020-000.8

I would like to remove any $3 that has less than 3 occurences, so the outcome would be like
111111121;000-000.1;000-000.2
111111211;000-000.1;000-000.2
111112111;000-000.1;000-000.2
111121111;000-000.1;000-000.2
111211111;000-000.1;000-000.2
112111111;000-000.1;000-000.2
121111112;000-000.2;020-000.8

That is, only $3 got deleted, as it had only a single occurence
Sadly I am not really sure if (thus how) this could be done relatively easily (as doing the =COUNT.IF matching, and manuel delete in Excel feels quite embarrassing)

or if you prefer:
$ awk -F';' 'NR==FNR{cnt[$3]++;next} {print (cnt[$3]<3 ? $1 FS $2 : $0)}' file file
this awk one-liner can help, it processes the file twice:
awk -F';' 'NR==FNR{a[$3]++;next}a[$3]<3{NF--}7' file file
Though that awk solutions are the best in terms of performance, your goal could be also achieved with something like this:
while IFS=" " read a b;do
if [[ "$a" -lt "3" ]];then
sed -i "s/$b//" b.txt
fi
done <<<"$(cut -d";" -f3 b.txt |sort |uniq -c)"
Operation is based on the output of cut which counts occurrences.
$cut -d";" -f3 b.txt |sort |uniq -c
7 000-000.2
1 000-200.2
3 020-000.8
Above works for editing source file in place, so keep a back up for testing.
You can feed the file twice to awk. On the first run you gather a statistic that you use in the second run:
script.awk
FNR == NR { stats[ $3 ]++
next
}
{ if( stats[$3] < 3) print $1 $2
else print
}
Run it like this: awk -F\; -f script.awk yourfile yourfile .
The condition FNR == NR is true during processing of the first filename given to awk. The next statement skips the second block.
Thus the second block is only used for processing the second filename given to awk (which is here the same as the first filename).

Using file redirects to input a variable search pattern to awk

I'm attempting to write a small script in bash. The script's purpose is to pull out a search pattern from file1.txt and to print the line number of the matching search from file2.txt. I know the exact place of the pattern that I want in file1.txt, and I can pull that out quite easily with sed and awk e.g.
sed -n 3p file1.txt | awk '{print $4}'
The part that I'm having trouble with is passing that information again to awk to use as a search pattern in file2.txt. Something along the lines of:
awk '/search_pattern/{print NR}' file2.txt
I was able to get this code working in two lines of code by storing the output of the first line as a variable, and passing that variable to awk in the second line,
myVariable=`sed -n 3p file1.txt | awk '{print $4}'`
awk '/'"$myVariable"'/{print NR}' file2.txt
but this seems "inelegant". I was hoping there was a way to do this in one line of code using file redirects (or something similar?). Any help is greatly appreciated!
You can avoid sed | awk with
awk 'NR==3{print $4; exit 0}' file1.txt
You can do your search with:
search=$(awk 'NR==3{print $4; exit 0}' file1.txt)
awk -v search="$search" '$0 ~ search { print NR }' file2.txt
You could even write that all on one line, but I don't recommend that; clarity is more important than brevity.
In principle, you could use:
awk 'NR==3{search = $4; next} FNR!=NR && $0 ~ search {print NR}' file1.txt file2.txt
This scans file1.txt and finds the search pattern; then it scans file2.txt and finds the lines that match. One line — even moderately clear. There'll be lots of matches if there isn't a column 4 on line 3 of file1.txt.

Combine grep -f and awk

I am using two commands:
awk '{ print $2 }' SomeFile.txt > Pattern.txt
grep -f Pattern.txt File.txt
With the first command I create a list of desirable patterns. With the second command I extract all lines in File.txt that match the lines in the Pattern.txt
My question is, is there a way to combine awk and grep in a pipeline so that I don't have to generate the intermediate Pattern.txt file?

You can do this all in one invocation of awk:
awk 'NR==FNR{a[$2];next}{for(i in a)if($0~i)print}' Somefile.txt File.txt
Populate keys in the array a from the second column of the first file. NR==FNR identifies the first file (total record number is equal to this file's record number). next skips the second block for the first file.
In the second block, loop through all the keys in the array and if the line matches any of them, print it. To avoid printing the line more than once if it matches more than one pattern, you could add a next here too, i.e. {for(i in a)if($0~i){print;next}}.
If the "patterns" are actually fixed strings, it is even simpler:
awk 'NR==FNR{a[$2];next}$0 in a' Somefile.txt File.txt
If your shell supports it, you can use process substitution:
grep -f <(awk '{ print $2 }' SomeFile.txt) File.txt
bash and zsh will support that, others will probably too, didn't tested.
Simpler as the above and supported by all shells would be to use a pipe:
awk '{ print $2 }' SomeFile.txt | grep -f - File.txt
- is used as the argument to -f. - has a special meaning here and stands for stdin. Thanks to Tom Fenech for mentioning that!
